An object of my invention is to provide a special type of jig which will allow for correct aligning of pipes when the same are butt welded together.
A further object of my invention is to provide a jig which will securely hold the pipes in aligned position during such welding operation and with a uniform maximum pressure being exerted for this purpose.
A further object of my invention is to provide an easily handled arrangement.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIGURE 3 is a detail showing a portion of an end view of FIGURE 1.
In describing the jig of my invention I have used the character to designate a pair of vertically positioned posts or supports which are attached to a lower base plate 11, which base plate 11 extends forwardly to the forward portion .12, and I have used the character 13 to indicate a transverse strap portion extending from the vertical members 10, and attached at 14 to the member 13 is the flange 15 which includes the cylindrical portion 16 with which is threadably engaged at 17 a vertically positioned threaded rod '18 to which is attached at 19 the turning handle 20.
The rod 18 is pivotally mounted at 21 to the piece 22.
The piece 22 is adapted to bear against the boss 23 which is secured to a transverse strap 24, which in turn is attached at 25 (see FIGURE 2) to the elongated links or bars 26, which bars are pivotally secured at 27 to the vertical supports 10. Attached to the bars 26 at 28 are the rounded cylindrical members 29.
Pivotally attached at 3th to the posts 10 are the arms 31 to which is attached the transverse strengthening channel member 32, and the arms 31 are attached at 33 to the angle members 34.
Pivotally attached at 35 to the bars 26 are the links 36 which are pivotally attached at 37 to the arms 31.
The device is used in the following manner.
The character 38 designates a pair of pipe sections which are to be butt-welded at the junction point 39.
The sections are placed in the angle members 34 in approximate abutment and the bars 26 are brought downwardly until the members 29 abut against the pipe sections at 40 (see FIGURE 1). The sections are then ready to be welded together at the point 39, and it is usually not necessary to use the handle and screw 18 to hold the arms 26 in their downward position since the ends of the pipes will be held firmly and since the outer ends are usually supported by any suitable supports, although the screw 18 can be used if desired.
It will be noted that the pivots 35 are closer to the pivoting points 27 than the pivots 37 are to the pivots 30. This construction provides means whereby the bars 26 will close more rapidly or will move downwardly more rapidly than the arms 31, so that when the members 29 abut against the pipes 33 a locking action will be provided wherein the pipes cannot travel any further downwardly. Also in the converse manner the bars 26 will open to a greater extent, or will open more quickly.
3,45,6Z1 Patented July 24, 1962 I have found the device to provide its operations in a minimum of time and with great efliciency, and it will now be noted that I have provided the advantages mentioned in the objects of my invention with further advantages being apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. An alignment jig for butt welding pipes comprising a framework including a pair of vertically positioned laterally spaced posts, upper parallel bars pivoted to said posts and extending to one side of said posts, lower parallel arms pivoted to said posts and extending to the same side of said posts as said upper bars, pipe receiving members facing said upper bars attached to said lower arms, links pivotally connected to said upper bars and said lower arms, the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said upper bars and the pivoting points of said upper bars and said posts being shorter than the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said lower arms and the pivoting points of said lower arms and said posts, whereby movement of the said upper bars downwardly, will secure said pipe ends.
2. An alignment jig for butt welding pipes comprising a framework including a pair of vertically positioned laterally spaced posts, upper parallel bars pivoted to said posts and extending to one side of said posts, lower parallel arms pivoted to said posts and extending to the same side of said posts as said upper bars, pipe receiving members facing said upper bars attached to said lower arms, links pivotally connected to said upper bars and said lower arms, the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said upper bars and the pivoting points of said upper bars and said posts being shorter than the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said lower arms and the pivoting points of said lower arms and said posts, whereby movement of the said upper bars downwardly, will secure said pipe ends, said framework including a flange extending therefrom, said flange having a threaded rod threadably engaged therewith, a transverse strap attached to said upper bars against which said threaded rod abuts.
3. An alignment jig for butt welding pipes comprising a framework including a pair of vertically positioned laterally spaced posts, upper parallel bars pivoted to said posts and extending to one side of said posts, lower parallel arms pivoted to said posts and extending to the same side of said posts as said upper bars, pipe receiving members facing said upper bars attached to said lower arms, links pivotally connected to said upper bars and said lower arms, the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said upper bars and the pivoting points of said upper bars and said posts being shorter than the distance between the pivoting points of said links and said lower arms and the pivoting points of said lower arms and said posts, whereby movement of the said upper bars downwardly, will secure said pipe ends, said framework including a flange extending therefrom, said flange having a threaded rod threadably engaged therewith, a transverse strap attached to said upper bars against which said threaded rod abuts, said pipe receiving members comprising angle members.
