3,042,979 WlNDUW SILLS AND COVERINGS THEREFR William I. McNeil, 719 Kahl Bldg., Davenport, Iowa Filed Jan. 30, 1958,*Ser. No. 712,124 2 Claims. (Cl. 20-11) My invention relates to an improvement in sills and sill covers lfor the lower ends of windows.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved form of sill and covering therefor which will be simple, easily and quickly applied, economical, #and will allow a big saving over the cost of installing sills now in use and which will be of great durability as well as ornamental;
To provide an inner sill and covering in combination with the inner sides of a window frame base having an extension upon the base adapted to retain the adjacent edge of the inner sill and sill cover and provided with an interior ornamental rim and a depending flange extending downwardly to cover the junction of plaster upon a building wall with an extension of the sill;
To provide a combination of window frame base and covered sill which will be easily cleanable, ornamental, waterproof, and will prevent leakage of water.
FIGURE 1 is a top or plan view of my sill cover and adjacent parts;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical section on the middle line 2-2 of FIGURE l;
FIGURES 3 land 4 are sectional details showing an alternate form of my cover as applied to Wooden buildings. j
An extension 1B of the window lframe base 1 rests upon one edge of a flexible cover 4 mounted upon the cap 3D of the sill. The sill blocks 3 and 3A are part of the outer Wall of the building 'and preferably composed of concrete, stone or brick of the desired size and shape.
'Ilhe base member 1 of the window frame may be composed of sheet metal such as aluminum, either cast or extruded, with downwardly extending portions resting upon sills 3 and 3A and secured in place by a locking plate 12 which may be secured fby screws or stud bolts or other fastenings to the sill block 3.
The sill block 3 may have a wooden cap 3D mounted thereon and urring strips 3C `form part of the supporting wall which may be lathed and plastered as at 3B.
Upon the cap 3D a cover 4 is mounted. One edge 5 of the cover extends under the projection 1B and may be secured by a press t and by an adhesive. 'I'he downwardly projecting flange 1A of the frame base 1 is continued downwardly at 1C.
A similar downward extension 1F of the frame base 1 is formed at the outer edge thereof and rests upon the sill member 3A.
The inner edge of the cover 4 is enlarged to form -an ornamental rim 6 and integral therewith is a downwardly extending ange 7 which extends downwardly far enough to cover and close the line of contact between the plaster 3B and the downwardly extending strip 8 secured to the cap 3D.
The bottom member 2 of the lower sash 9 when closed is in close contact with the trame base 1 and may be of any desired form. Such sashes are in common use and form no part `of this invention.
The cover 4 is preferably composed principally of a suitable grade of rubber which may be vulcanized by heat and pressure to any desired degree, and will have com- 3,642,979 satented July l0, 1962 A desirable appearance can be given to the `cover 4 to color it or to imitate marble or other substances. It may be colored to correspond to or contrast with the colors of adjacent parts.
yIn FIGURE 3 I have shown my cover as applied to a frame building with a relatively thick wall with a base 13 upon which the lower end `14 of a sash rests. The sash 14 extends over one edge of the cover 4 which is secured to a cap 15 with -a rim and downwardly extending ange as in FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 shows my ycover modiiied by narrowing the flat face 17 to tit a cap 18 of a thinner wall Ibut with rim 20 and flange 19 as in FIGURE 2.
Various modications may be made in the form, color,
and size oi' the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed by the claims, and I do not limit my claims to the precise forms shown in the drawings.
I claim:
l. In a wall of a building, .the combination with a metal window frame, of inner and outer horizontal sill members at the base thereof, a hollow metal base member, inner and outer sill members forming part of the Wall, a cap of wood mounted upon the inner sill member, the metal base being secured above Ythe sills, a supporting met-al plate mounted upon the inner sill member adapted to contract and secure the outer base member in position, an elastic flexible rubber cover about three-eighths of an inch in thickness secured by a permanent adhesive on the cap, a downwardly extending ange on the inner edge of the metal base member having a horizontal lateral extension integral therewith, the outer edge of the cover eX- tending under and being secured to the'extension by the pressure thereof and by an adhesive rmly uniting the cover to the inner sill member.
2. In a window opening for a wall of a building, inner and outer horizontal sill members rat the bottom of the Window opening forming part of the wall, `a cap of wood VYmounted upon the inner sill member, light metal lframes upon the inner and outer sill members, -a supporting plate mounted upon the inner sill memberadapted to contact and permanently secure the outer base member in position, a exible cover of elastic rubber about three-eighths of an inch in thickness mounted on the cap, a downwardly extending ange on and 'along the inner edge of the outer metal frame member having a horizontal lateral extension integral therewith, an adjoining edge of the cover extendring under and being secured to said extension by pressure thereof and by 1an Iadhesive firmly and permanently uniting the rubber cover and the wooden cap.
