Filed Feb. 29, 1960, Ser. No. 11,906 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-51) This invention relates to a carton provided with an integral cover. The main objects of this invention are,

First, to provide a carton which is well adapted for the packaging of a relatively heavy material such, for example, as bacon.

Second, to provide a carton which may be formed of relatively light stock and at the same time is rigid when closed and capable of withstanding heavy stresses such, for example, as might result from the stacking of a plurality of loaded cartons.

Third, to provide a carton which may be quickly sealed after filling and quickly opened without the use of implements.

Fourth, to provide a carton having these advantages which may be very economically produced and shipped in the fiat blank form and readily set up.

Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a carton embodying our invention, contents being conventionally illustrated therein.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on a line corresponding to line 22 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is a detailed section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of FIGS. 1 and 2.

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of FIG. 1 showing the details of the connection for the side and end walls of the receptacle and cover.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary view in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 5--5 of HG. 1.

FIG. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating one step which may be taken in opening the carton.

FIG. 7 is a plan view of the blank.

The embodiment of our invention illustrated is especially designed for the packaging of bacon in stacked relation, which is conventionally illustrated at 1 in FIGS. 1 and 2.

The carton comprises a receptacle designated generally by the numeral 2, and a cover designated generally by the numeral 3. The receptacle comprises a bottom portion 4, the rear wall 5, end walls 6 and front wall 7. The end walls are provided with corner flaps 8 which are disposed upon the inner sides of the front wall 7 in lapping relation thereto. The end and front walls of the receptacle have

9 and 10 respectively, which are folded inwardly thereon and adhesively secured thereto, preferably throughout the length thereof, the front receptacle wall being in overlapping relation to the corner flaps 8 and adhesively secured thereto.

The cover 3 includes the top 11, which is hingedly secured to the upper edge of the rear wall 5 of the receptacle. The cover includes the end walls 12 and front wall 13. The end walls of the cover are connected to the end walls of the receptacle by means of the collapsible corner flap 14. The end walls of the cover have corner flaps 15 on their front ends foldable inwardly upon the inner side of the cover front wall '13. The end walls have inner Wall members 16 extending from end to end thereof and folded inwardly thereon and desirably adhesively secured thereto throughout the length thereof. The

3,042,284 Patented July 3, 1962 front wall 13 of the cover has spaced inner wall members 17 folded inwardly thereon and adhesively secured thereto in overlapping retaining relation to the corner flaps 15. The front wall is provided with a sealing flap 18 disposed between the inner wall member 17 and foldable on and adhesively secured to the underside of the bottom when the receptacle is filled and closed. This sealing flap is connected to the front wall of the cover by the weakened fracturing zone 19, so that While it serves to retain the cover in closed position, the cover may be readily released. To facilitate this break-out, a finger piece 20 is formed by the curved fracturing line 21 in the front wall, so that the sealing flap may be easily fractured to permit opening of the carton, see FIG. 6. With this arrangement of parts, the sealed container may be very quickly opened. The walls of the cover are of the same vertical width as the walls of the receptacle, so that the walls of both serve as effective supports for the cover so that load upon the receptacle such as occurs when a plurality of the receptacles filled with relatively heavy material are stacked does not crush lower receptacles.

The cover top wall is provided with a window opening 22 with a transparent closure 23. With the parts thus arranged, the cartons may be very economically produced and quickly assembled. The adhesive used is desirably of the pressure sealing type so that the cartons may be shipped in the blank and quickly set up at the point of use.

We have illustrated and described our invention in a highly desirable embodiment thereof. We have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt our invention as may be desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A carton formed of an integral blank cut and scored to provide a receptacle including a bottom, rear, front and end walls, a cover hingedly connected to the rear wall and including front and end walls of a width corresponding to the width of the front and end walls of the receptacle, the rear ends of the receptacle and cover end walls being connected by inwardly foldable corner flaps, the receptacle end walls having corner flaps on their front ends disposed on the inner side of the receptacle front wall, said receptacle front and end walls having inner wall members on their outer edges folded inwardly thereon and adhesively secured thereto with their edges adjacent the bottom and with the inner front wall member overlapping and adhesively secured to the corner flaps on the front ends of said end walls, the cover end walls having inner wall members on their outer edges folded inwardly thereon and adhesively secured thereto with their edges adjacent the top, the cover front wall having spaced inner wall members on their outer edges eXtending from the ends thereof and folded inwardly thereon and adhesively secured thereto in overlapping relation to said end wall front corner flaps, said front wall having a sealing flap between its spaced inner front wall members fracturably connected thereto and positioned upon and secured to the under side of the receptacle bottom when the receptacle is sealed, said cover front wall having a fracturable portion above said sealing flap to facilitate the opening of the receptacle when sealed.

2. A carton formed of an integral blank cut and scored to provide a receptacle including a bottom, rear, front and end walls, a cover hingedly connected to the rear wall and including front and end walls of a width corresponding to the width of the front and end walls of the receptacle, the adjacent ends of the receptacle end and front walls being fixedly connected, said receptacle front and end walls having inner wall members on their outer edges folded inwardly thereon and fixedly secured thereto and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the adjacent ends of the cover end and front walls being fixedly connected, the cover end walls having inner end wall members on their outer edges folded inwardly thereon and fixedly secured thereto and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the cover front wall having spaced inner wall members on its outer edges folded inwardly thereon and fixedly secured thereto and constituting reinforcing members therefor, the front wall having a sealing flap between its said spaced inner front wall members 'fracturably connected thereto and positioned upon and secured to the under side of the receptacle when the receptacle is sealed, the cover front wall portion having a fracturable portion above said sealing flap to facilitate the opening of the receptacle.
