(Cl. -119) In a copending application Serial No. 35,519, filed June 13, 1960, we have disclosed and broadly claimed a novel mop of the strand type having novel means for assembling the mop strands into a mop head and connecting the mop head with the handle, the handle having a portion of reduced size, and the extractor having a pivotal connection with an extractor handle, having an opening to be aligned withthe mop head, and having a bottom slot to permit the extractor to pass downwardly over the mop handle.
Our 'present invention embodies some of the foregoing features, but consists more particularly in devising novel means for detachably connecting and interlocking a detachable mop head with the mop handle.
A further object of theinvention is to devise a novel f mop handle terminating in an offset hook which interlocks with the walls of a slot in the mop head structure.
A further object is to devise a novel cam and locking member for retaining the mop head and mop handle in locked condition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, our invention comprehends a novel mop handle, a novel rnop head assembly, novel means to interlock the mop head with the handle, and novel extracting mechanism.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments of it which we have found in practice to give reliable and satisfactory results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited, except by the scope of the appended claim, to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.

Referring to the drawings:
The mop head 1 has its strands secured in assembled condition by a U-shaped clip 2, the ends of which pass through the closed rear end of a cylinder 3 which slips over the rear end of the mop head assembly and are then bent over such closed cylinder end to fix the cylinder in assembled relationship with the mop head. The closed end of the cylinder has an off-center slot 4.
The mop handle 5 has its forward portion formed by a bar 6 which may have any desired shape in cross section, but which as shown is a fiat bar twisted upon itself with one end passing through a reinforcing member 7 and fixed in position by a fastening device 8. The front end of the bottom slot 14 has a slot 15 and a pivot member 16 connects the upper end of the extractor with an actuating handle 17. The handle 17 has a clearance in a guide 18 and its rear end is bent downward-1y and pivoted at 19 to a handle sleeve 20 having a stud 21 extending into a longitudinal groove '22 in the handle 5, thus preventing relative rotation of the sleeve 20 and the mop handle 5. When the extractor ring swings downwardly, the bottom wall of the slot 15 contacts the bottom face of the rod to limit rearward swinging movement of the ring.
In the operation of the embodiment shown in FIG- URES 1 to 4, the mop head is positioned at an angle with the mop handle and the bar portion of the handle moved forwardly to cause the off-center hook to enter the slot 4. The parts are then brought into longitudinal alignment and the locking sleeve moved over the cylinder 3, thus retaining the mop head and handle in locked condition. The extractor and its operating mechanism is similar to that shown in my co-pending application except that the slot 14 is wider than the width of the bar 6. When the handle sleeve 2% is moved forwardly the extractor contacts the cam 13 and moves downwardly over the bar 6 so that the opening in the extractor is aligned with the mop head and the continued forward movement of the extractor causes it to move over the mop strands and efiect the extracting operation. On the rearward movement of the extractor as seen in FIGURE 2, the extractor swings upwardly on its pivot to clear the mop head.
In the embodiment shown in FIGURES 5 to 7, we provide a double lock of the handle bar and the cylinder of the mop head. The strands 23 are secured by a U-shaped clip 24, the ends of which pass through an end member 25 and are bent over such member. The member 25 has a slot 26 extending on both sides of its center. A spring 27, which may be omitted if desired, is within a cap sleeve 28 .slidable over the mop head, and bears against at one end the member 25. A cam 29 is slidable on a handle bar portion 30 and bears against the cap sleeve. The bar 35 has slots 31 and 32 forming respectively hooks 33 and 34 to pass through the slot 26 and are turned to interlock with the member 25, see FIGURES 5 and 6, and the unlocked position being shown in FIGURE 7. The cam 29 is fixed in position by a pin 35.
The member 25 has a depression to receive the hooks 33. The spring 27 tensions the interlocking parts of the mop head and mop handle;
The extracting mechmism operates in the same manner as already described.
It is to be understood that the contour of the opening in the exterior conforms to the contour of the assembled mop strands.
We claim:
A mop with extracting mechanism, comprising a mop head, a mop handle, a cap on the rear end of the mop head having an off-center slot in its closed end, said mop handle having an off-center hook at its front end to be received in said cap slot when the mop head and mop handle are not in longitudinal alignment and to be locked in the cap slot when the mop head and the mop handle are not in longitudinal alignment and to be locked in the cap slot when the mop head and the mop handle are in longitudinal alignment, a cam slidable on the mop handle and having a sleeve to receive said cap and lock together the mop head and the mop handle, said cam having at its rear end a face directed at an angle to the handle, an ex- Patented June 26, 1962 tractor in the form of a split ring having a slot through its wall, a rod alongside of the mop handle and .pivotally connected at its front end with the periphery of the ring opposite to its slot and contacted by a wall of the ring when the latter swings outwardly to limit outward swinging movement of the ring, a guide on the mop handle through which the rod passes, and a sleeve on the mop handle pivotally connected with the rear end of the rod, said ring after an extracting stroke swinging outwardly to pass rearwardly over the mop head and then swinging moved thereby over the mop handle into longitudinal alignment with the mop head.
