GAME APPARATUS.
i @PECEFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,802, dated August 19, 1884..
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ,latins l-I. Bowen, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaine Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an apparat-us with which the well hnown gaine of consequences7 can be played, and the invention consists in printing or stamping in any suitable inannernpon cach ot' a series of strips of cloth or other suitable sheet flexible material the respective parts oi' the complete sentence required in such gaine, and arranging each of said strips upon suitable rollers in regular order, and in such relation to an opening in a box or receptacle for said rollers and strips that each of said strips can be moved by operating its rollers for its respective part of the complete sentence printed thereon to be brought to and shown at said opening, and thus from all the strips so operated the coinplete sentence formed thereby can be read at said opening, all substantially as herein fully described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings this invention is illustrated Figure l bei ne* a )lanA view showin g a box in which the several parts of the present .invention are arranged for operation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical seetion on line y y, Figl. Fig. 3 is a cross-sec tion on line x fr, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a detail plan view below the top of the box. Fig. 5 is a detail' plan view, and Fig. 6 a detail sectional View, on line b Y), Fig. 5, to be herein after referred to.
In the drawings, A represents a box having sides B, top C, and ends D, in and by which the various parts of the present invention are arranged and supported i'or operation.
E and F are two horizontal parallel rods or shafts extending the length ofthe box, and permanently secured in the ends D. On cach shaft E F, respectively, is a series of rollers, G l-I, arranged to turn freely thereon, and having ilanges .l and l, one, J, of which flanges is of a diameter sullicient to project through a transverse slit, a, in and above the top C of the box A, by which each roller G H can be turned by hand, as desired, their periphcries being suitably roughened or serrated for such purpose, the other llangc, K, being ot less diameter and entirely within the box. These rollers (l H are arranged in pairs across the L box, and each. pair ot' rollers has a strip, L, of cloth or other suitable flexible sheet inaterial, secured by its ends to the. rollers, and so that the cloth, the., can be wound from one onto the other ofthe rollers, or vice versa, by turning either one or the other of said rollers.
M is a longitudinal bar or rest extending the length and secured at its ends to the ends D of the box, and located between the two rows of rollers G H,- a little above them and just below a longitudinal slit or opening, N, in the top, extending the length oi the box. This opening N has a cover, l), hinged at b to the back part, d, of the top C, by which to close the opening N when desired. Each strip of cloth, the., as it inoves from one roller to the other passes over the rest M, where it can be seen through the opening N. On each strip L is printed in any suitable manner transversely, as at f, one part of the complete sentence, to be formed according toits intended location and order in the box A, so that with the series of strips placed in the box, and having their respective parts of the sentence to be formed printed thereon in their order, and moved so as to show at said opening N, the sentence will be formed and can then be read. Each strip L is to have a variety of its respective part oi' the sentence to be formed printed thereon, and as many as the length of the strip that can be arranged upon the rollers in the box will admit, they being also sufficient distance apart to insure only one of such parts of the sentence on each strip being seen at one time at the opening N.
In order, when the cover l is closed, that the strips can bc inoved for their respective parts of the complete sentence to come inline at the opening N, dots or marks f/ are provided on each strip alternately with the parts f of the sentence printed thereon, and openings Q are arranged in the front portion, h, ol' the top C ofthe box, which dots g and openings Q are in line with each other and the movement of the strip as it is wound from IOO one roller to the other, so that moving the strip and stopping it when any one of the dots or marks g comes under or is shown at the opening Q its respective part f of the sentence will be then in the opening N and can be read on raising the cover.
As in the said game of consequences several of the words making the sentence are arbitrary, it is preferable in this invention to have such printed in any suitable manner upon the back portion, d, of the top G,near its front edge, Z, over the space between'the strips on which is printed the respective parts f of the sentence of which the arbitrary word forms the connection, all of which is shown at m in Fig. l. The several arbitrary words m, however, can be printed on their respective strips; but placing them on the top avoids confusion and points out more particularly the peculiarity of the game of consequences. In playing the said gaine with the present invention the cover l is irst closed, the stri ps L are all preferably wound upon their respeetive rollers I-I, and then the first strip L at the left is moved by turning its roller G in the direction of the arrow, and it is stopped, when desired, as any dot y comes in sight through or under the opening Q above said strip. Then the second or next strip is so moved and set, then the third, and so on until all are so moved and set, when, raising the cover, the sentence formed can be then read from the strips and the top C of the box.
In Fig. l is shownthrough the opening N, the cover being removed, the series of strips L as so set with the words which, in connection with the arbitrary words upon the top C, are to be read in the order shown, viz: Eo centric John S. Sullivan and affected Mrs. Lantry met in Paris. He said ta, tal She said Youre a dude.7 The world said queer racket.7 rlhe consequence was a love feast.
As it might be desirable when several persons are playing the game with the present invention that the names of thepcrsons playing, or their friends, or of other persons should be used instead ofthe names printed on the second and fourth strips from the left, a piece of card-board, paper, or any suitable sheet material, R, can be used, on which any name desired can be written, and such. cards inserted in the shoulders a of the top C over the second and fourth Ystrips L, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and these cards can have their surfaces prepared with suitable material, sc that the name written thereon can be easily erased and another one written, and so on, and in the use of such cards, obviously the second and fourth strips need not be used. rlhe flanges J and K of the rollers serve to guide the strip in being wound thereon and prevent one strip from interfering with another.
In lieu of two rollers to each strip, obvious ly the strip can be wound upon 011e roller, and such roller placed directly under the opening N, dispensing in such case with the ticularly in reference to the game of eonsequences,77 obviously other games can be played where sentences are to be iormed,or for telling fortunes, and in such eases the words upon the several strips would have to be changed to suit the game.
v1Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, with a boxhaving an opening, N, of a series of strips of sheet material, each of which strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of strips, and each strip being arranged, in connection with suitable mechanism, to be so moved that its part of such sentence will be brought to or at such opening, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a box having an opening, N, of a series of strips of sheet material, each of which strips is connected to rollers to be wound thereon, and each of which strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of strips, and each strip arranged to be so moved by the operation of said rollers that its part of such sentence will be brought to or at such opening, substantially as and for the purpose speeied.
3. The combination, with a box having an opening, N, of a series of stri ps of sheet material, each of which strips is connected to rollers to be wound thereon, and each of which strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of strips, each of said rollers having a disk or flange projecting through a slit, a, in the top of said box by which to operate said rollers to move said strip, so that its part of such sentence will be brought to or at such opening N, substantiall y as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with a box having an opening, N, and an opening, in its top, of a series of strips of sheet material, each. of which strips is connected to rollers to be wound thereon, and each of which strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of strips, and a dot or mark, g, whereby in the moving of the strip, when said dot or mark comes under or in a line with said opening Q, the part ofthe sentence on said strip will be at such opening N, all substantially as and for the purpose specified;
5. The combination, with a box having an opening, N, and an opening, Q, in its top,and a cover, P, of a series of strips of sheet material, each of which strips is lconnected to rollers to be Wound thereon, and each ofWhich strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of strips, and a dot or mark, g, whereby in the IOO IIO
moving of said strip, when said dot or mark comes under or in line with sai'd opening,` Q, the part of the sentence on saiflstrip will be at such opening` N, all substantially as and for 5 the purpose specified.
6. The combination, with a box having an opening, N, in its top, and a rest or bar, M, loelow said opening, of aserics ofsbrips of sheet material, each of which strips is connected to rollers to be wound thereomand each of which strips has printed thereon its respective part of the sentence represented on the series of
