(Cl. 223-88) This invention relates to garment hanging devices and more particularly to auxiliary garment supporting devices adapted for attachment to garment supporting devices of ordinary construction.

An important object of this invention isthe provision of an adapter for a garment supporting device of ordinary and usual construction, which adapter may be easily and simply attached to or detached from said hanger.

Another object of this invention is to provide an adapter which will simultaneously act as a supporting and reinforcing element and add to the rigidity and strength of the basic garment hanger.

Another object of this invention is to provide an adapter which will automatically and in a simple manner provide for the balancing and proper vertical alignment of the hanger and the garment supported thereby and will properly support trousers, skirts, or the like, in an upright posi-. tion without the necessity of folding or applying compression to said garment.

Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment or adapter to garment hanging devices of usual construction which adapter will not interfere with the use of said hanger in the usual manner.

Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment to the ordinary type of garment supporting device, which adapter is capable of attachment and removal in an easy, simple and convenient manner without removing the garment supported by the adapter from said adapter.

Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment having the aforementioned properties that is simple and practical in construction, efiicient in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and convenient to use.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description and claim and from the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals refer to like parts and wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one form of this invention showing the adapter as it may be formed from a continuous and simple piece of wire or other suitable material and adapted to support trousers or the like;

FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a device embodying this invention and showing the same as it appears when attached to a wire garment supporting device of usual construction;

FIGURE 3 is an end view of the device as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2;

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of another form of this invention showing the device as it may be constructed from a number of separate pieces of wire or other suitable material;

FIGURE 5 is an end view of the device as exemplified in FIGURE 4;

FIGURE 6 is still another form of this invention showing the adapter as it may be constructed from a continuous piece of wire or other suitable material and adaptable to hang skirts and the like;

FIGURE 7 is an end view of the device as shown in FIGURE 6;

aired States Patent hfrce As shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings the adapter comprising the present invention consists of a central supporting arm It) terminating at its upper end in hook or loop 12. Said hook or loop 12 is preferably open as shown at 11 and is shaped so as to engage about and rest upon the upper portion of shoulder pieces 13 and 14 of the conventional type hanger or garment supporting device 15. Such device usually consists of a gooseneck portion 16 from which there depend inwardly converging shoulder pieces 13 and 14 and bottom connecting rod 17. Hook or loop 12 is rearwardly bent and deflected from the axis of arm 10 so as to form an obtuse angle with said central supporting arm. The other end of said arm 10 is provided with laterally extending arms 18 and 19 which consist of diverging front and rear members 20 and 21 of arm 18 and members 22 and 23 of arm 19. Front and rear members 24 and 21 of arm 18 and front and rear members 22 and 23 of arm 19 terminate in upward and backwardly extending garment supporting elements 24, 25, 26 and 2'7 respectively. Garment supporting elements 24 and 25 are joined together by an integrally formed loop 28 and garment supporting members 26 and 27 are similarly joined by means of loop 29, thus enabling construction from a single continuous length of suitable material.

The loop portion 12 of central supporting arm 10 is disposed in a plane so as to form an acute angle with the plane of front garment supporting elements 24 and 26 so that the upward bends of the garment supporting elements 24, 25, 26 and 27 will be disposed in a substantially vertical position when the adapter is placed upon the usual garment supporting device 15.

As appears from FIGURE 2 the central supporting arm It is of such length and so disposed as to enable bottom connecting rod 17 of the usual gar-ment supporting device 15 to fit between and engage the loops 23 and 29 of the garment supporting elements, thus reinforcing and substantially increasing the rigidity of the basic garment hanger 15. In addition, because of the weight of the garment supported by the adapter, the entire assembly will hang in a substantially vertical position.

In the modification shown in FIGURES 4 and 5, the central supporting arm 30 is provided with a hook 32 defiected from the axis thereof. The laterally diverging arms 33 and 34 are each formed of an independent wire joined to the arm 3% at 35 as by means of welding. Each of the arms 33 and 34 is provided with a garment supporting loop at the ends thereof, arm 33 being provided with loops 36 and arm 34 being provided with loops 37. Since the confronting loops are independent of one another, the loops or similar means of a garment may be disposed along the length of each of arms 33 and 34. In this arrangement, contact between the juncture 35 and the rod 17 of the garment hanger provides an additional support along the central portion thereof and prevents the sagging of rod 17 due to the weight of an additional garment.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGURES 6 and 7, the central supporting arm 38 terminates in the axially deflected hook 39. The lower end of the wire forming the arm is extended and bent in the manner shown to form the garment support from a continuous length of wire. The laterally extending and diverging arms 46 and 41 are connected by means of depending loops 42 and 43 which form the garment supporting elements for the unit. The lower connecting extremities 44 and 45 form the additional reinforcing and stiffening supports for the hanger 17.

FIGURES 8 and 9 illustrate the manner in which a pair of trousers 46 are supported by means of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGURES 4 and 5 by the insertion of loops 36 and 37 into the pockets formed by the cufis 47.

While I have here shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent however that this invention is not limited to this embodiment and that many changes, additions and modifications can be made in connection therewith without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as herein disclosed and hereinafter claimed. Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

An attachment for a wire type hanger of the type having a gooseneck provided with depending shoulder pieces and a connecting rod for said shoulder pieces, said attachment comprising a central supporting arm provided with a loop formed at the upper extremity thereof, said loop being rearwardly bent and deflected from the axis of said central supporting arm to define an obtuse angle with said central supporting arm, said loop having a substantially triangular conformation so as to interlock with said shoulder pieces at their juncture with said gooseneck when said attachment is mounted on the hanger in engagement with said gooseneck, a pair of laterally extending arms disposed at the lower extremity of said first arm,

garment supporting elements disposed at the free extremities of said laterally extending arms, said first arm having a predetermined linear extent to dispose a portion of said garment supporting elements in underlying contact with said rod when the attachment is mounted upon a hanger so as to provide a reinforcement for said rod, said loop being disposed in a plane to define an acute angle with the plane of said garment supporting elements.
