Description
CHARLES MCCARTHY,
OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY APPARATUS FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,336, dated October 9, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MCCARTHY, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a. new and Improved Automatic Steam-Boiler Safety- Valve; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a front view; Fig. II a cross section, and Fig. III a longitudinal section of the boiler and valve.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a valve on the boiler acted upon by the water in the boiler and so arranged and connected with the fireplace that, by, any excess of pressure in the boiler the water in the boiler will be forced through the valve, and thrown into the iire for the purpose of extinguishing the same.
In the accompanying drawing A represents the boiler, on which the chamber B, containing a valve D, similar to a common safetyvalve, is fastened. This chamber is made sutliciently large so as to contain the necessary weight on the valve for the required pressure. By this arrangement the cover, C, of the chamber may be fastened by a lock and key to prevent any interference with the load or weights on the valve, or the valve may be provided with a lever, acted upon by a weight on its end.
To the bottom of the chamber, B, a pipe, E, is fastened, connecting with the bottom of the valve, D, and running downward in the boiler until within a few inches of the bottom of the same.
On the side of the chamber, B, near the bottom, but above the valve, D, a branch, F, is provided, to which the pipe Gr is attached, running toward the front of the boiler, and then downward until within a few inches of the top of the grate bars H, where the pipes G enter into the fireplace, through holes made in the boiler. By this arrangement a direct communication is made for the water to pass from the boiler unon the fire as soon as the valve D is raised.
When the boiler is in operation the steam will force the water of the boiler into the pipe E, up to the valve D. As soon as the pressure of steam in the boiler increases, and becomes equal or above the load on the valve D the same will be raised by the action of the water, forced against the valve, D, through the pipe E, escaping into the chamber B, and from there through the pipe Gr, into the fireplace, upon the fire, so as to ex tinguish the same.
In the common safety valve as soon as the same rises or is raised the water rises up with the escaping steam, and as most accidents happen on account of the water being allowed to come below the top plates, in consequence of which said top plates become overheated and generate steam very fast, the water which is carried up with the escaping steam, as above mentioned, falls back upon said heated plates, and is then suddenly converted into steam at a high temperature and pressure, and to which cause most accidents may be traced. In my improved automatic safety valve the fire is at once eX' tinguished as soon as the pressure rises in the boiler above that required, and the water is not only prevented from coming near the overheated plates, but is forced out of the boiler, increasing thereby at the saine time the space in the boiler for the steam to expand, and consequently diminish in pressure, preventing thereby or at least diminishing the chances of most accidents.
I am aware that several arrangements have been heretofore made to cause the water from a steam boiler or reservoir to flow upon the fire, by an excess of pressure, for the purpose of extinguishing thereby the tire, and do therefore not claim this broadly, but
`What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
The arrangement and combination of the pipe E with a safety valve in such a manner that by any excess of pressure in the boiler the water from the lower part of the boiler, shall be forced up said pipe E, to open said valve and pass upon the fire or made to give an alarm, the whole being constructed substantially as set forth.
