PACKING APPARATUS FOR STAPLE FIBER, RAW COTTON AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 3, 1957 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 I29 I27 I26 M5 I) H 752 f /5/ M {56 United States Patent The present invention relates to a packing apparatus for staple fiber, raw cotton and the like, and particularly to an apparatus, wherein on one side of a package case a horizontally movable press plate is arranged, which is moved outwardly for filling said package case with materials to be packed and then advanced inwardly for performing a horizontal preliminary compression, after said preliminary compression having been finished a vertically movable press plate arranged below the package case being raised for performing a principal compression.
In the usual compression operation for packing staple fiber, raw cotton and the like, the materials to be packed are allowed to fall from above into a package case of a predetermined volume and said case is filled manually. The materials to be packed within the package case are then compressed vertically by the press plate of a hydraulic press raising from below.
Such a compression operation requires much manpower and time for filling the package case with materials to be packed. Moreover, it is very difiicult in such an operation to produce packages of a specific standard form, because packing is performed by a vertical compression alone while using a package case of a fixed volume.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a packing apparatus for staple fiber, raw cotton and the like, which makes it possible to avoid the abovementioned disadvantages,
Other features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description given with respect to one embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a part of the apparatus;
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional plan view of a package case portion;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged end elevation of a part of the apparatus;
FIG. 4 is a view showing the vertical press with the press box therein in section;
FIG. 5 is a plan View partly in section showing an operational mechanical part of a horizontally movable press and press plate;
FIG. 6 is a broken end view of the unit illustnated in FIG. 5 shown partly in section;
FIG. 7 is a detailed side elevation, shown partly in section, of a position control mechanism for the part of the apparatus illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3;
FIG. 8 is an elevation, shown partly in Section, of a control mechanism for the compressing device of the apparatus and a stopping means therefor;
FIG. 9 is a sectional front view of a combination of mechanical parts forming a compression and stopping means;
FIG. 10 is a side view of the combination of parts shown in FIG. 9;
FIGS. 11, 12 and 13 are elevations, shown partly in section, of a shifter part of the apparatus;
FIG. 14 is a mid-sectional view of the transmission gear mechanism of the apparatus;
FIG. 15 is an enlarged broken plan view of the package case;
FIG. 16 is a fragmental horizontal cross-section show- "ice ing a horizontal rod and a magnetic switch portion of the apparatus;
FIG. 17 is a broken rear view, shown partly in section, of a lower arm member mechanism and one of its contacts; and
FIG. 18 is a broken front view of a push piece with a part thereof removed.
Now the construction of the present apparatus will be described with respect to the accompanying drawings: A package case 1 is carried by a supporting frame 2, in such a manner that the upper-most portion of said package case 1 comes in contact with the lower face of a base stand 3 of a hydraulic apparatus. Wheels 6 movable along rails 5 are journalled on a machine stand 4 beneath the supporting frame 2, and a press plate 7 of said hydraulic apparatus is positioned below said stand 4.
As illustrated in FIG. 2, an enveloping frame 8 of ]-shape is provided on one side of the package case 1 v and a horizontally movable press slate 9 is provided at the open end of the enveloping frame, in such a manner that the press plate may be moved into the enveloping frame with a close fit therein. On the back of said horizontally movable press plate 9, bolts 13, 14 are provided which engage respectively with internally threaded cylinders 11, 12 of a frame 10. The cylinders 11, 12 are provided with worm wheels 15, 16 respectively and a worm 17 engaging therewith is fitted on an ordinary vertical revolving shaft 18, at the lower end of which is provided a revolving power mechanism 19 therefor. See FIG. 2. Staple fiber, raw cotton or the like, having been charged into said package case 1 is pressed in a preliminary compression stage by the horizontally movable press plate 9 advancing into the package case 1 by the bolts 13, 14, said press plate 9 sliding horizontally within said enveloping frame 8. After this preliminary compression stage has been finished, said staple fiber, raw cotton or like materials are then compressed vertically by the press plate 7 of the hydraulic means which is raised to complete a principal compression stage.
Further in the present apparatus, a door 26 pivoted to a crank shaft 27 is provided on one side of the package case 1, on one side of said door 26 being pivoted a stop ping rod 20. An actuating lever 22 with a projection 21 for stopping the front end of said stopping rod 20 is pivoted to said door 26 at a point displaced from the pivot of the stopping rod 21). A pull wire, such as a wire rope or the like, is connected with one end of an L-shaped lever 23, and a stopping member 140, which engages with a stopping piece 25 provided at a corner of the package case 1, is provided on the other end of said lever 23. Furthermore, another stopping piece 141 is secured to the front end of said member 22, a connecting rod 142 is arranged between the lever 23 and the actuating lever 22, a projected piece 143 is secured to said crank shaft 27, a link 144 is pivoted to said projected piece 143, a sliding rod 145 held by a bearing piece 147 is pivoted to said link 144, and a spring 146 is secured to said sliding rod 145. In order to open the door 26 of the package case 1, the L-shaped lever is turned by pulling the wire 24 to release the stopping member from the stopping piece 25 and simultaneously to turn the actuating lever 22 about a pivot as a fulcrum by pulling the connecting rod 142 and simultaneously releasing the stopping projection 21 from the stopping member 1490f the stopping rod 20 in order to free the stopping rod and thus the door 26. Thus, the door 26 which tends to open outwards under an inner pressure by the packed staple fiber, raw cotton or like materials is arranged to open outwards about the crank shaft 27 as a fulcrum. The sliding rod is then allowed to slide through the link 144 by the projecting piece 143, which in turn is actuated by the revolving crank shaft 27. Concurrently with the movement of the sliding rod 145, the spring 146 is compressed. Therefore, the sliding rod 145 moves slowly. The opening operation of the door 26 is thus also carried out slowly. At the same time, the crank shaft 27 of ti e door 26 revolves to move an actuating rod 29 axially through a link 28 attached to the end of the rod. This movement of the rod pushes a revolving ring 30 attached to the other end of the actuating rod 29 along an inclined face 32 of a projection 31 provided on the frame 10. This action pushes an actuating piece 33 pivoted to the frame 10 and a connectiing rod 34 pivoted thereto to induce movement of connecting rods 34 and 35 pivoted to a spindle of the revolving ring 31 thereby to pull the stopping rod 29 outwardly so that the enveloping frame may be opened.
Also, in the present apparatus, an operational device as well as an automatic stop device are provided for moving the machine stand 4 of the package case 1 and stopping it exactly at a fixed position, for instance, at the hydraulic apparatus; and an operational device is provided for the horizontal press plate.
In the above referred to operational and stopping device for the machine stand 4, an L-shaped lever 37 (see FIG. 7) is pivoted to one side of the machine stand 4 by means of a pin 38. This lever engages a projection 36 provided on the rail 5 which swings it longitudinally of the machine stand as the latter is moved along the rails 5. A second lever, an operational lever 39, is pivoted at one end thereof to the side of the machine stand by a pin 40, and a vertical link 41 is pivoted at one end to the L-shaped lever 37 at one side portion thereof and to the second lever 39. Vertical actuating rods 42 and 43, respectively, are pivoted at their lower ends to the other side portion of the L-shaped lever and to the free end of the second lever, and are connected at their upper ends to a horizontal bar 46, which limits downward movement of a horizontal hand-operated lever 45 which is biased downwardly by a spring 44. The hand-operated lever 45 is provided with a stopping projection 48 which, in turn, engages an engaging groove 47 of a vertical hand lever 47.
An internally threaded cylinder 51, having end flanges 50, is loosely held in a cylindrical lower portion 49 of the vertical hand lever 47 and is threaded upon a threaded central portion 54 of a sliding rod 53 axially movable in a casing 52. A spring 58 is arranged between a flange 56 compressed between a screw on the left hand side (as viewed in FIG. 7) of the sliding rod 53 and a fixed flange 57 surrounding the sliding rod 53. Furthermore, a spring 62 is provided on the right hand portion of the sliding rod 53 between a flange 66 screwed upon the threaded central portion 54 of the rod 53 and a flange 61 slidable upon the sliding 53. Another flange 60 is screwed upon a threaded portion of the sliding rod to the right of the flange 61. Said flanges 61 and 60 are positioned on opposite sides of the lower end of an actuating rod 63. A shifter is secured to a shaft 64 at the upper end of said actuating rod 63. By means of said shifter 65 movable cones 70, '71, which are movably inserted on a transmission shaft 69 are shifted to engage respectively with cone-friction clutch 73 secured to said transmission shaft 69 and a cone friction clutch 63 mounted on a driving shaft 67. The clutches are thus adapted to be selectively operated. The transmission shaft 69 on an extension thereof has a gear 74 engaged with a gear 75 provided on a shaft 76 of the wheel 6.
In the above-mentioned mechanism, for causing the machine stand 4 to run and stop at a predetermined position, the L-shaped lever 37 is turned by the projection 36 of the rail 5, said lever 37 swinging in one direction or the other to raise one of the actuating rods 42, 43 depending upon the direction of movement of the machine stand 4. When the L-shaped lever 37 swings to the right, the connecting lever 39 will be raised through the link 41 to raise the actuating rod 43, while when the L-shaped lever 37 swings to the left, the actuating rod 42 will be raised. Thus, the lever 45 is caused to swing upwards by actuating rods 42 or 43 to detach its stopping portion 43 from the engaging groove of the lever handle 47. When the lever handle 47 is released, the sliding rod 53 will be moved by the springs 53, 62 to the left in FIG. 7 to move the actuating rod 63 for turning the shaft 64; and a shifter 65 is actuated by said shaft 64 and then said shifter 65 renders the movable cone 70 (FIG. 14) to be released from the cone friction clutch 63. At the same time the movable cone 71 is caused to contact under pressure the cone friction clutch 73; therefore, the revolution of a driving shaft 67 is not transmitted to a transmission shaft 69. Consequently, the revolving shaft '76 of the wheel 6, which is revolved from the transmission shaft 69 through gears 74, 75, stops. Thus revolution of the wheel 6 is also stopped. Thus, also, the machine stand 4 can be stopped at a predetermined position, for instance, at the position of the press plate 7 of the hydraulic apparatus.
Also, in the present apparatus, a power mechanism is provided for operating the aforementioned horizontally movable press plate Accordingly, said horizontally movable plate is fitted with a fitting piece 78 (FlG. 9)
,0 of horizontally movable pipe '77 reciprocally moving with said plate 9 horizontally. A roller 79 is mounted on said fitting piece 78 and a sliding rod 82 is inserted into the horizontally movable pipe 77, the screw 30 at the rear end of said sliding rod 32 being engaged with a stopping piece 31. The fore end of the sliding rod 82 is formed with a protruding head 83, and further an engaging collar 85, having a set screw 84, is positioned upon the horizontally movable pipe 77, said engaging collar coacting with a lever 87, its upper end 88 being stopped and pushed thereby. One end of a lateral connecting rod 89 is pivotally connected to said lever 37 through a connecting lever 88. The other end of said connecting rod 83' is pivoted to another connecting lever said connecting lever 96 being pivoted to the lower end of another L-shaped lever 92 (FIG. 8) which is provided at the rear of said L-shaped lever 37 through a link 91. (See FIGS. 9, l0 and 8). An operational lever 94 is pivoted upon a pin 95, and a vertical link 93 connects this operational lever to the L-shapcd lever 92. Vertical actuating rods 96, 97 generally similar to the actuating rods 42 and 43, are pivoted respectively to the end of the horizontal leg of the L-shaped lever 92 and the operational lever 94. The upper ends of said actuating rods 96, 97 are connected respectively to a horizontal bar 166 which limits downward movement of a horizontal hand-operated lever 99 which is biased downwardly by a spring 93. The lever 99 being provided with a stopping projection 102 which, in turn, engages an engaging groove 191. An internally threaded cylinder 165 having end flanges 104 is loosely held in a cylindrical lower portion 103 of the vertical hand lever 101 and is threaded upon a central portion 108 of a sliding rod 197 axially movable in a casing 106. A spring 112 is arranged between a flange 110 compressed between a screw 109 which is provided on the left hand side (as viewed in FIG. 8) of said sliding rod 167 and a fixed flange 111 surrounding the sliding rod 107. Another spring is positioned on the right hand portion of the sliding rod 107 between a flange 113 screwed upon the central threaded portion 108 of the sliding rod 167 and a flange 114- slidable upon the sliding rod 107. The flange 114 is connected with the lower end of an actuating rod 116, secured at its upper end to a shaft 117. A shifter 118 (FIG. 13) is connected to the shaft 117 and is adapted to act on a movable cone 123 of a cone friction clutch 122 provided on a revolving shaft 121 of a gear which engages with a gear 119 provided on a driving shaft 67. See FIG. 14. In this case, the movable cone 124 on the other side which is provided in one body with said movable cone 123 is adapted to come in contact with the cone friction clutch 125 on the other side, and a gear 127 is provided on the revolving shaft 126 of movable cones 123, 124. The transmission shaft 69 is provided with a gear 128 which meshes with said gear 127. A pinion 129 revolving with said gear 128 is engaged with a gear 131 which is mounted on a revolving shaft 135 which in turn is arranged on one side of the transmission shaft 69. A bevel gear 132 being provided upon the shaft 135 for rotation with said gear 131. A bevel gear 133 (FIG. 12) engaging said bevel gear 132 is provided on a shaft 134 of said vertical revolving shaft 16 (FIGS. 5 and 6), said shaft 134 being connected to a flange 135 provided on an upper end thereof.
Operation of the mechanism just explained, for reciprocating said horizontally movable press plate 9 will now be set forth. First said lever 99 is raised in starting the operation to release the stopping projection 162 from the engaging groove 161 of the hand lever 101 for rendering the hand lever free to rotate to the right. Then, the sliding rod is moved to the right by the tubular portion 103 of the hand lever 161 through said flange 164 of said threaded cylinder 105 to actuate the actuating rod 116, and actuate the shifter 118 through the shaft 117 of said rod 116. The movable cone 123 being thus brought in contact with the friction clutch 122 by means of said shifter 118, and the revolving shaft 126 being rotated by said revolving shaft 121 through friction between said movable cone 125 and said cone friction clutch 122, the gear 128 is revolved. The pinion 129 and the gear 131 being thus revolved, the bevel gears 132, 133 are also revolved. The vertical revolving shaft 18 is consequently rotated, as explained above, through which the internally threaded cylinders 11, 12 are revolved in their fixed positions through the worm 17 fixed to the shaft 18. The bolts 13, 14 are thus advanced for forwarding the horizontally movable press plate 9 to press the staple fiber, raw cotton or the like in a preliminary compression. The horizontally movable pipe 77 secured to said press plate 9 and the press plate are moved together. Thus, when the press plate 9 reaches the extreme end of its compressing movement, the stopping piece 81 is halted by the upper end 66 of the lever 87. Therefore, the sliding rod 82is stopped on this position. Thus the horizontally movable pipe 77 alone is moved, and when an inner wall 130 at a rear end of the horizontally movable pipe 77 is at the rear end of the protruding head 83 of the sliding rod 82, the sliding rod 82 will be pulled out. The stopping piece 81 is stopped at a rear end thereof by the upper end 86 of the lever 87 and by this push on the upper end 86 causes the lever 87 to swing and at the same time cause the L-shaped lever 92 to swing through the link 91. Further the driving rod 90 is pulled down by the L-shaped lever 92, and simultaneously the operational lever 94 is swung through the link 99, the actuating rod 9'7 is raised and the horizontal bar 100 is pushed upwards by the upper end of the rod 97 to raise the lever99. The lever handle 101 is released from the engaging groove thereof by detaching stopping member 162 from said engaging groove. Said lever handle 161, previously described, is biased to the left, as viewed in FIG. 8, by the springs 112 and 115, and therefore turns to the left upon being released. This movement of the lever handle shifts the sliding rod 107 to the left and actuates the actuating rod 116 by means of the flange 138 on the sliding rod 107. The lever handle 161 then actuates the shifter 118 through the shaft 117 in the reverse direction to the aforesaid direction, thereby causing said shifter 113 to act on the movable cone 124, thereby releasing the movable cone 123 automatically from the cone friction clutch 122. Thus, since the revolution of the revolving shaft 126 is halted, revolution of the vertical revolving shaft 18 is stopped. Consequently, compression operation by the horizontally movable press plate 9 is halted. When the lever handle 101 is again inclined to the right, by hand, the sliding rod moves reversely, moving the actuating rod 116 reversely. Such motion shifts the movable cone 123, by means of the shifter 113 through the shaft 117, to engage the cone friction clutch 122. The revolving shaft 126 is reversely rotated by the revolving shaft 121, which is revolved in opposite direction by revolving the motor reversely. the vertical revolving shaft 18 being also revolved reversely. This retracts the horizontally movable press plate 9 simultaneously with the horizontally movable pipe 77, the stopping flange of which engages the upper end 86 of the lever 87. As a result, the lever 87 is swung in opposite direction, whereby the shifter 118 is actuated to shift the cone 123 away from the friction clutch 122 and the cone 124 into engagement with the cone friction clutch 125, and revolution of the revolving shaft 126 is stopped. Consequently, the horizontally movable press plate 9 is stopped in the retracted position. In this case, as the rear end of the sliding rod 82 comes in contact with the abutment 139, movement of the sliding rod 82 is stopped and only the horizontally movable pipe 77 is retracted and the sliding rod 82 slides in the interior thereof.
A horizontal bar 1513 protrudes on one side of the horizontally movable press plate 9. See FIGS. 16 and 17. Limiting blocks 151, 152 are fixed by screws 153, 154 in predetermined spacing one from the other upon the bar 151), and bolts 155, 156 are screwed respectively into the ends of lever rods 157, 158 disposed between said limiting blocks 151, 152. The bolts 155, 156 have their heads oppositely disposed and may be pushed against said limiting blocks 151, 152 alternately. Fitting portions 161, 162 are provided on said rods near their respective pivots 159, 166. Furthermore, the rear end portion 163 of the lever rod 158 is engaged by one end of a pin 164. The other end of said pin 164- is attached to another pivoted lever 165 having an extension 165a adapted to actuate a push button 167 of .a magnetic switch 166 in the motor circuit provided on the supporting frame 2. Further push buttons 1'68, 169, (FIG. 1) of the magnetic switch 166 are provided above the push button 167, and a lever 176 is pivoted to swing and alternately cover said push buttons 168, 169. The lever 170 is pivoted to a connecting rod 171, the lower end of which is connected to the arm 173 of a bell crank lever 172, and a connecting rod 175 pivoted to the other arm 1'74 of-the bell crank lever 172 is connected to the L- shaped lever 92.
It is necessary to use electric power economically in order to prevent uneconomical consumption of driving power, whenhalting revolution of the motor, following advancing and retraction of the horizontally movable press plate 9. The action of the stopping mechanism of the motor is as follows: When said horizontally movable press plate 9 enters the package case 1 and said press plate 9 begins horizontal compression, the press plate is outside of said package case. As the press plate enters the package case, the horizontal rod cooperating therewith is moved forward, and a limiting piece 152 of said horizontal rod 150 simultaneously moves. Thus, when the horizontally movable press plate 9 reaches the end of its compression, the limiting piece 152, moving together with the horizontal rod, engages the bolt 156 and pushes said bolt. The lever arm rod 158 is thereby allowed to swing around the pivotal axis as a fulcrum, while the pin 164 is pushed by the other end portion 163 thereof. Hence, the lever is caused to swing by the pin 164, and the push piece 165a is moved. The push button 167 of the magnet switch 166 is thus pushed by said push piece 165a, the current circuit of the motor being opened by actuating said magnet switch 166 to halt the revolution of motor.
In the aforementioned case, when the horizontally movable press plate 9 has completed a horizontal compression, the revolution of the motor will be stopped.
However, when the press plate is retracted by the reverse revolution of motor, after the horizontal compression has been finished and returned to the starting position for the preliminary horizontal compression, revolution of motor is halted. The stopping action is carried out as follows: When the horizontally movable press plate 9 is retracted, the horizontal rod 150 is also moved rearwardly, and simultaneously the limiting pieces 151, 152 also move rearwardly, one limiting piece 151 engages the bolt 155 to push said bolt causing the lever 157 to swing and move its engaging portion 161 which then moves an engaging portion 162 of the lever 158, thus swinging the lever 158 to its former position. The pin 164 is pushed by the rear end portion 163 of the lever 158, and the lever 165 is allowed to swing by said pin 164. Simultaneously the push piece 165a is pushed, and the push button 167 of the magnet switch 166 is pushed inwardly. Thus the switch 166 is actuated to open the circuit of the motor to stop revolution of the motor.
In the aforementioned horizontal movement, the lever 170 covering the upper faces of the push buttons 168, 169 which act to close the electric current circuit of the motor by operating the magnetic switch 166 is caused to swing to cover said push buttons 168, 169 alternately, thereby pushing one of the push buttons so that no mistake may occur in the advance and retraction of the horizontally movable press plate 9 in said horizontal compression movement. This action is carried out as follows: When the movement is stopped by changing a clutch at the end of advance and retreat of the horizontally movable press plate 9 in the horizontal compression, the swinging L-shaped lever 92 causes the bell crank lever 172 to act through a connecting rod 171, swinging the lever 170. Accordingly, the push buttons 168, 169 are alternately operated to avoid mistakes in pushing the push buttons. In other words, as the advance of the horizontally movable press plate 9 (preliminary compression) is commenced in the horizontal compression, the push button 168 is pushed after the upper face of the push button 196, for instance has been covered through actuation of the lever 170 by the connecting rod 171. On the other hand, in the retreat of said movable press plate 9, the push button 169 is pushed after the upper face of the push button 168 has been covered through actuation of the lever 170 by the connecting rod 171.
Thus, in the advance and retreat movements of the horizontally movable press plate 9, for preventing any mistake in starting the driving motor, the one exposed button of the push buttons 168, 169 may be pushed only after the other one has been covered.
Said compression operation, wherein the volume of the staple fiber, raw cotton and the like is reduced by a horizontal compression by means of said horizontally movable press plate 9, is a preliminary compression. Therefore, the supporting frame 2 as well as the package case 1 are moved to the press plate 7 of the hydraulic apparatus, i.e. the main compression mechanism, by the rails and the wheels 6, after said compression operation or during said preliminary compression, through the machine stand 4. Then, such material having thus been compressed horizontally is compressed vertically in said position by raising the press plate 7, the volume of the material being decreased to a minimum for convenience in handling storage or transportation. In one embdiment of the invention, the distance between the positions of said preliminary compression and that of the main compression is approximately three meters, the time required for the preliminary compression is about three seconds and the time required by the main compression and packing operation is approximately three minutes.
According to the present invention, first staple fibre, raw cotton or the like (fine light fibres of floating condition) can be compressed to a small extent horizontally and then to a greater extent vertically to a form most convenient for transport. In addition, operations such as charging, filling and packing the material into the package case are extremely easy, resulting in a remarkably high efficiency in the compression and packing operation.
