No. sense 4 Claims. at. 20648) This invention relates to a package or box for cigarettes and matches. This is a substitute for my previous application filed on November 25, 1958, Serial Number 698,- 587 and abandoned.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a combined cigarette and match package wherein the matches are supported inside of the package for ready removal for lighting the cigarettes.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combined cigarette and match package wherein the matches form-an integral part of the wall insert for enclosing the cigarettes.

A further object of the invention is to provide a package for cigarettes and matches wherein the matches are sosupported inside the package that the cigarettes may be-extracted from one end thereof, one after another, leaving the remaining cigarettes intact and the remaining portion of the package closed to preserve the aroma and moisture of the cigarettes.

It is also proposed, according to a modification of the invention, to provide a package for cigarettes and matches wherein the matches are secured inside a retractible cover, the matches being individually withdrawable for lighting the cigarettes. I

In the drawings, in FIG. 1 a package or box for cigarettes and matches made in accordance with the invention is designated generally at lit. This package comprises a elevational view of the open package body 11 of cardboard or other suitable material rectangular in configuration and in cross section. The body comprises a front wall 12, a rear wall 13, side wal's 14, 14 and a bottom wall 15, and is open at the top. The top 16 of the front Wall 12 terminates short of the top of the rear wall 13 thereby providing slanting top edges 17 on the tet when the cover is closed, it seats on the top edges 17 of the side walls and on the top edge 16 of the front wall thereby sealing the Package.

In order to partially close the open top front and top sides of the body, a strip or wall segment 23 as shown in FIG. 2 of similar material as the material of the body, is insertedinto the open top of the body adjacent the front and sidewalls. The strip or insert 23 is formed from a substantially rectangular shaped blank 24 shown in spread out condition in FIG. 3. The blank has a dependent extension 25 formed along its bottom end. In order to insert the strip into the body 11, it is bent along the crease lines indicated at 26 into the shape shown in FIG. 2, forming side'wings' 27, 27. The shaped'strip or wall segment 23 is inserted into the hollow compartment formed by the walls'of the body for containing cigarettes 28 alongside the inner surface of the top of the front and side walls of the body with the top ends of the strip or wall segment extending above the top edges of the walls of the body as seen in FIG. 1. The strip 23 extends above the rear wall a distance equal to the depth of the rear side 29 ofthe cover 18 'sothat when the cover is in closed position, the top 30 of the cover seats on the top edge of the strip 23. The extension 25 on the bottom end of the strip 23 provides additional bearing surface against the front wall in order to position the strip in the package, and the stripis secured in position byspots of adhesive 31 on the side'wi'ngs 27a't' the bottom thereof.

In accordance with the invention, the body of the strip or wall segment 23 at its top end is formed with closely spaced slits 32 extending from the upper edge of the strip 23' downwardly to a point substantially midway theends of the side wings 27' thereby forming a plurality of clon gated narrow strips 33. 4 The top ends of the strips 33 are preferably formed with slightly curvedtips and the tips' are coated with a substance easily ignited such' as phoscated at 35 in FIG. 4. The strip 23in addition'tosupporting the matches 33 also partially encloses the cigarettesi28 1.. :Iz'L-I In the modified cigarette and match package 40 shown in FIGS. 6 to 9, inclusive, the body 41 is constructed similarly to the body 11 of the form of FIGS. 1 to 5, inclusive, except that the front wall 42 is formed with an outwardly extending offset portion constituting a pocket 43 at its top, centrally thereof. The cover 48 is also constructed similarly to cover 18 but the front wall 50 thereof is creased at 51 to form an inwardly olfset flap 52. A tongue 53 is formed on the free end edge of the flap at its center. The tongue enters the pocket 43 when the cover is closed. The flap 52 serves to maintain an air- 3 tight seal of the package at the front when the tongue 53 is inserted into the pocket 43.

In this modification, the insert strip 54 instead of being formed with matches 33 is formed with a cut-out portion 55 to facilitate removal of the cigarettes 58 from the package.

A plurality of strips of matches 63 are disposed in the cover 48 along the inner side of its front wall 50. The matches are joined at their bases and are removed by being torn away individually from the bases. The several strips are secured in the cover by a layer 65 of adhesive. The bottoms of the strips are secured by the ad-. hesive to the underside of the top 60 of the cover 48. On the rear side 59 of the cover there is secured a sufficient quantity of match igniting material 67.

The matches are disposed forwardly of the insert strip 54 and flap 52 abuts the front of strip 54 when the cover is closed. The tongue 53 is rather flexible so that it can easily be fitted into the pocket 43 to hold the cover secureiy closed.

In all other respects, the form of invention shown in FIGS. 6-9 is similar to the form of FIGS. 1-5 and similar numerals are used to indicate similar parts.

In use, the smoker opens the cover and removes a cigarette and match. The cover is then closed and the match is struck on the striking material for lighting the cigarette. Upon closing the cover, an effective seal is provided with the body of the package to protect the cigarettes from loss of aroma and moisture and to protect the matches.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

l. A package for cigarettes and matches, comprising a hollow box-like body having flat rectangular front, rear, side, top and bottom walls, said walls being formed to define a compartment for cigarettes and a cover hinged to the body by a fold in said rear wall, a strip inserted in said body and secured to the walls thereof, said strip extending upwardly beyond said body into the cover, the front wall of the body having an outwardly extended portion defining a pocket with said strip, the front wall of said cover having a flap folded to form a flange, a tongue extension formed on said flap for engagement in said pocket when the cover is closed, said flange abutting an extended portion of the strip to form an air-tight seal for the package when the cover is closed, a plurality of matches secured inside the front wall of the cover, the matches being cemented therein, and a quantity of striking material secured to the exterior of the box, said matches and said cigarettes both being exposed for removal when the cover is opened.

2. A package for cigarettes and matches, comprising a hollow box-like body having fiat rectangular front, rear, side, top and bottom walls, said walls being formed to define a compartment for cigarettes and a cover hinged to the body by a fold in said rear wall, a strip inserted in said body and secured to the walls thereof, said strip extending upwardly beyond said body into the cover, the front wall of the body having an outwardly extended portion defining a pocket with said strip, the front wall of said cover having a flap folded to form a flange, a tongue extension formed on said flap for engagement in said pocket when the cover is closed, said flange abutting an extended portion of the strip to form an air-tight seal for the package when the cover is closed, and a plurality of matches secured inside the front Wall of the cover, said matches and said cigarettes both being exposed for removal when the cover is opened.

A package for cigarettes and matches comprising a hollow box-like body and cover, said body having a front wall, said portions having a common rear Wall whereby the body and cover are hinged together, said body being adapted to contain a plurality of cigarettes therein with ends of the cigarettes extending beyond the body into the cover, said cover having a front wall extending beyond the body, a plurality of matches disposed inside the cover adjacent to said front wall, said front wall being formed with an integral, preformed, rearwardly offset flange to contact the body and effect an air-tight seal thereat, said front wall having a tongue extending beyond the flange and fitting into the body when the cover is closed, said body having a pocket on its front wall offset from the plane thereof to receive said tongue, and an insert strip disposed in the body and extending beyond the body into the cover, said strip having a cut-out portion to facilitate removal of the cigarettes from the cover, said matches and said cigarettes both being exposed for removal when the cover is opened.

A package for cigarettes and matches comprising a hollow box-like body and cover, said body having a front Wall, said body and cover having a common rear wall whereby the body and cover are hinged together, said body being adapted to contain a plurality of cigarettes therein with ends of the cigarettes extending beyond the body into the cover, said cover having a front wall extending beyond the body, a plurality of matches disposed inside the cover adjacent to said front wall, said front wall being formed with an integral, preformed, rearwardly offset flange to contact the base portion and effect an air-tight seal thereat, said front wall having a tongue extending beyond the flange and adapted to fit into the body when the cover is closed, said body having a pocket on its front wall ofiset from the plane thereof to receive said tongue, an insert strip disposed in the body and extending beyond the body into the cover, said strip having a cut-out portion to facilitate removal of the cigarettes from the cover, and a quantity of striking material disposed on the exterior of the box, said matches and said cigarettes both being exposed for removal when the cover is opened.
