(Cl. 197-63) The present invention relates to a margin setting and releasing device for typewriters, and more particularly to an improvement of electric typewriters in which the margin stop is set from a key provided on the key board of the machine.
All typewriters require margin stops for stopping the carriage in terminal positions. Arrangements are known in which the margin stop is shifted by manual operation along a rack bar on the carriage. Other machines release the margin stop from the rack bar 'by operation of a margin release key, requiring shifting of the carriage to the desired position relative to the margin stop.
When the carriage arrives during a writing operation at an end position in which the margin stop engages a corresponding stop on the frame of the machine, the carriage is stopped. In modern machines, a locking device for all keys of the typewriter is actuated, so that it is not possible to produce superimposed imprints in the last position of the carriage by inadvertently operating several keys. In all typewriters, a margin release key is provided so that several additional letters may be typed if the operator so desires. In the machines which lock the keys when the typewriter carriage arrives in its end position, the margin release key effects a release of the keys by the locking device so that additional letters may be typed while the carriage moves beyond its end position defined by the margin stop.
The known typewriters require two different means for performing the margin setting operation, and for performing the margin release operation. Other typewriters, in which no margin setting key is provided, require a manual operation at the rear of the carriage.
It is one object of the present invention to improve the margin setting and releasing device of the known typewriters, and to provide a margin setting and releasing device which has only a single member or key for setting a margin stop, and for releasing a margin stop.
Another object of the present invention is to provide in a typewriter in which all keys are automatically locked when the margin stop engages a stationary stop, a margin release key which efiects the margin release by unlocking the keys of the machine, and to use the same key for shifting an element of the margin stop to a free position in which the carriage can be shifted relative to the margin stop to set the margin stop to a different position.
Another object of the present invention is to operate the locking means for the keys by electromagnetic means under the control of a switch which is operated from a single margin setting and releasing key.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a margin setting and releasing device of such simple construction that margin setting and releasing operations can be easily performed by an unskilled operator.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combined margin setting and releasing device of compact construction which can be built into standard typewriters without requiring extensive structural changes.
With these objects in view, one embodiment of the present invention consists in a margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, and comprises a margin stop mounted on a bar of the typewriter carriage and including an element shiftable from a locked position to a free position permitting adjustment of the position of the margin stop; stop means mounted on the frame of the typewriter for movement between a blocking position preventing carriage movement, and a releasing position permitting carriage movement, said margin stop engaging said stop means in a terminal position of the carriage and moving said stop means to said blocking position; and a single margin setting and releasing key operatively connected to the shiftable element of the margin stop for moving the same to its free position, and for releasing the carriage for movement beyond the end position of the carriage.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention includes an arrangement for locking the keys of the type writer at the moment in which the margin stop engages the stop means on the frame in the end position of the carriage and moves the stop means to the blocking position. The operation of the single margin setting and releasing key, unlocks the locking means so that the keys can be operated for typing additional letters While the carriage passes beyond its end position defined by the setting of the margin stop.
This embodiment of the invention preferably includes locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; spring means urging the locking means to lock the keys; electromagnetic means normally holding the locking means in a releasing position permitting operation of the keys; a margin stop mounted on the guide bar of the carriage and including an element shiftable to a free position; stationary stop means for engaging the margin stop in an end position of the carriage and being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to the actuated position upon engagement with the margin stop. The stop means are operatively counected to a switch in the circuit of the electromagnetic means to open the same when the stop means is shifted to the actuated position. The spring means actuate the locking means when the electromagnetic means is do energized. The arrangement further includes a single margin control key operatively connected to the shiftable element of margin stop for moving the same to its free position, and also operatively connected to the switch means to close the same to energize the electromagnetic means so that the locking means are moved by the energized electromagnetic means to a position releasing the keys for operation so that the carriage may pass beyond the margin stop.
The linkage which connects the margin control key with the margin stop, and the means which connect the stop means with the switch, are interconnected to effect a simultaneous operation of the respective devices.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are fragmentary perspective views illustrating a margin setting and releasing device according to the present invention in difierent operational positions.
Referring now to the drawings, a single margin control key 1 is provided for initiating all operations concerning the margin, including margin setting and margin release. The key lever 10. is mounted on a link 1b and on an angular lever 2. Link 1b is secured to a shaft 27 which is mounted in the frame of a typewriter for turning move ment, and carries a locking member 23. Angular lever 2 is mounted on another shaft 2a. Lever 2 is connected by a link 3a to another angular lever 3 which is turnable about a shaft 312. Lever 3b is connected by a link 4a to another angular lever 4 which is articulated to a push rod 5 mounted in a frame part 50 of the machine for longitudinal movement. The upper end of push rod 5 abuts a transverse projection 60 on a link 6 which is also guided in a. frame part 51. The upper end of link 6 is articulated to a release lever 7 which is turnably mounted on a shaft 7a, and has a portion 7b connected by a spring 6a to a fixed pin on the frame. The other arm 7c of the release lever 7 has a transversely bent portion 7d formed with a cutout or recess 8.
The transverse portion 7d is located above the path of movement, of the margin stops it) and which are mounted on margin stop rack bar 11. Rack bar 11 is part of the typewriter carriage, and the margin stops 10 and 10' include housings 10a, which are slidably guided on rack bar 11, and a transversely shiftable part 9 which carries teeth, not shown, and is spring-loaded so that the teeth on part 9 normally engage the teeth on the rack portion of bar 11 whereby the margin stop is normally fixed to bar 11 of the carriage. However, when part 9 is moved transversely to bar 11, the teeth disengage, and relative movement between guide bar 11 and margin stops 10, 10' is possible with bar 11 serving as a guide bar. Each part 9 of the margin stops 10 and 10' has a projecting ridge 9a matching the cutout 8, and when lever 7 is turned in a clockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 1, while one of the margin stops is positioned as shown in FIG. 2 or FIG. 3, cutout 8 engages the ridge 9a of the respective margin stop, and further turning movement of lever 7 will depress member 9 of margin stop 10 or 10, and effect disengagement of the margin stop for the purpose of permitting adjustment of the position of the margin stop by shifting of the carriage with bar 11. Such turning movement of lever 7 is obtained by depressing control key member 1 so that the linkage 1a, 2, 3a, 3, 4a, 4, 5, 6 acts on lever 7 to turn the same in clockwise direction. The spring 6a tends to turn release lever 7 in counter clockwise direction into a position releasing member 9 of the margin stop whereby control member 1 is restored to its initial position when control key 1 is released by the operator.
The left margin stop 10 has a projection 12 and the right margin stop has a projection 10b, the projections cooperating with a stop lever means 13 which is secured to shaft 7a by a screw 13c. Shaft 7a is turnable in the frame of the machine, and carries a lever 14 having a forked end portion with two prongs 14b and 140 which are located above and below, respectively, a pin 16a secured to a rod 16.
Stop lever means 13 has an oblique face 13a and a projection 13b. Assuming that the margin stop 10 is set on guide bar 11 in a selected position, and release lever 7 is in the retracted position illustrated in the drawing, then projection 12 will engage stop lever means 13 during carriage movement to the right when the carriage arrives in its selected end position at the end of a line as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. Projection 12 slightly depresses the respective end of stop lever 13 so that shaft 7a turns together with lever 14 which is secured to shaft 7a by a screw 1411. After a return movement of the carriage to the left, projection 10b of margin stop 10 will abut projection 13b, as shown in FIG. 2. A member 15 has perforated legs 15b, 15c mounted on rod 16 and downwardly urged with rod 16 by a spring 15d which abuts a frame portion 52. A screw 15:: secures member 15 to rod 16 in a selected adjusted position. The transversely projecting arm 15' of member 15 carries a pin 15a projecting into a slot 17c at the end of an intermediate lever 17 which is turnably mounted on a pin 17d secured to the frame of the machine. The above described link 6 has a transverse projection 6b which is located underneath pin 15a and cooperates with the same. When link 6 is raised by operation of the margin control key 1, projection 61) will tend to turn the intermediate lever 17 in counter clockwise direction as viewed in the drawing, and will also tend to raise rod 16 whereby lever 14 is turned and moves stop lever 13 to a lower position permitting passage of the projection 12 of the margin stop 10 during carriage movement.
When stop lever 13 is turned by projection 12 engaging the oblique face 13a, rod 16 will be raised and tend to turn intermediate lever 17 in counter clockwise direction, but since pin 15a is located above projection 61), such movement will have no influence on link 6, 6b, and on the release lever 7.
A blocking lever 13 is guided in a slot 18a in frame part 50 for movement in longitudinal direction thereof, and is mounted for turning movement on a switch actuator member 19 by means of a pin 18c. Switch actuator member 19 turnable about a pin 19a which is mounted on the frame of the machine has a lever arm 19d connected by a spring 26 to the lower arm 18d of blocking lever 18.
A slot 18b is provided in arm 18d, and the hook 25a of a connecting link 25 passes through slot 18b while the other end of link 25 passes through a bore '40 in lever 4. Link 25 constitutes a lost-motion connection between levers 4 and 18. Turning of blocking lever 18 in counter clockwise direction is possible since the slot 18a. in frame part 50 is elongated. Downward movement of blocking lever 18 in longitudinal direction thereof under the action of intermediate lever 17, 17a is limited in a blocking position in which no further turning of switch actuator 19 in clockwise direction is possible. Spring 26 will tend to turn switch actuator 19 into a position engaging a switch means 20, and switch 20 will be closed when projection 19b presses against the button 20a.
Spring 15d abuts on the frame part 52 and urges through member 15 the intermediate lever 17 to turn in clockwise direction so that spring 26 normally holds blocking lever 18 in a raised position in which switch actuator 19 engages button 20a with projection 19b so that switch means 20 is normally closed.
Switch means 20 is connected by a conventional circuit to the solenoid of an electromagnetic means 21 whose armature 21a is connected by a link 21b to the blocking member 23. A spring 22 is secured to the frame of the machine and to locking member 23 to urge the same into a locking position located between the balls of a row of balls 24 which are a part of locking means for locking all keys 28, 29 of the typewriter by which the type levers are actuated. When locking lever 23 is in the locking position shown in FIG. 3 projecting between balls 24, the keys of the typewriter are locked, and cannot be operated. In the unlocked position of FIG. 1, balls 24 permit a projection 29a of a sin le key 28 to enter so that the keys 28 (of which only one is shown) may be operated. Spring 22 tends to move locking lever 23 to the locking position of FIG. 3, but when switch 29 is closed, and electromagnetic means 21 is energized, armature 21a holds locking lever 23 in a position spaced from the row of balls 24 so that the keys of the typewriter are released for operation.
In an intermediate position of the carriage, shown in FIG. 1, the margin stops 10 and 10' are not in the region of stop lever 13, so that the same is in a normal higher position in which rod 16 is in a lower position, and intermediate lever 17 is in the position illustrated in FIG. 1, so that spring 26 can turn actuator member 19 into a position engaging button 201; and closing switch 20 so that electromagnetic means 21 is energized and holds locking lever 23 in an inoperative position retracted from the balls 24 and unlocking the keys of the typewriter While blocking lever 18 is raised by arm 19c of actuator member 19.
The margin setting and releasing device is operated as follows:
Margin Setting Operation For setting margin stop 10, the carriage is moved into the position of FIG. 3 in which projection 12 abuts the stop lever 13, since in this manner alignment between cutout 8 and ridge 9a is assured. For setting margin stop the carriage is first moved to the position of FIG. 2, in which projection 10b abuts lever 13.
The margin control key 1 is operated, and angular levers 3 and 4 turn in counter clockwise direction, as viewed in the drawing, so that push rod 5 is raised and acts through link 6 on release lever 7 which is turned in clockwise direction into a position which cutout 8 engages the ridge 9a on member 9 of the margin stop 1% or 10, and depresses the resiliently mounted member 9 to release the rack portion of bar 11 so that it is possible to shift the carriage with bar 11 relative to the stationarily held margin stop it) (or 10') until the margin stop has the desired position on the guide bar.
While margin control key 1 is held depressed, projection 6b of link 6 raises through members and 16 lever 14 so that stop lever 13 turns in clockwise direction and the end of lever 13 is lowered.
Blocking of Carriage Movement At the end of a line, the carriage moves to a position in which projection 12 of margin stop 10 engages the end face of stop lever 13 and moves onto the same so that stop lever 13 is turned in clockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 3. This effects turning of lever 14, raising of rod 16 and turning of intermediate lever 17 in counter clockwise direction until its projection 17a abuts on blocking lever 18 which is lowered and turns switch actuator 19 to the position illustrated in FIG. 3 of the drawing.
In this position, the spring-loaded button 20a is released, and switch 20 opens so that electromagnetic means 21 is de-energized, permitting spring 22 to pull locking lever 23 into the position engaging balls 24 so that all keys and type levers of the typewriter are locked. When springloaded actuator member 19 has moved to its inoperative position illustrated in FIG. 3, further lowering of the blocking lever 18 is not possible so that intermediate lever 17 cannot turn further in counter clockwise direction. Since all type keys 28 are locked and cannot be operated, the carriage escapement cannot be released and the carriage is stopped in a terminal position determined by the previously selected setting of margin stop 10. In the blocked end position of the carriage, it is not possible to produce superimposed imprints of several letters, since all keys and type levers of the machine are locked by locking means 24- as explained above.
When the carriage is returned to the left, projection 10b engages projection 13b and stops the carriage. Stop lever 13 does not turn, and the locking lever 23 is not operated. Projection 1.2 has released lever 13 and switch 20 is closed so that keys 28 are not locked.
Margin Release In order to permit the operator to write additional letters of an incomplete word after the carriage has been stopped in the end position determined by the margin stop 11), the locking lever 23 must be released. This is obtained in accordance with the present invention by depressing the margin control key 1.
Since the linkage 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, effects operation of the release lever 7, part 9 of margin stop 10 will be moved to its releasing position permitting relative movement between the carriage and the margin stop. However, such release is of no consequence, since neither the margin stop nor the carriage with guide bar 11 are moved by the operator.
Depression of the margin control key 1 will effect through linkage 2, 3, 4, turning of blocking lever 18 in counter clockwise direction so that the upper end of blocking lever 18 moves out of engagement with projection 17a, as shown in FIG. 4, permitting lever 17 to turn in counter clockwise direction when key 1 is depressed.
Separation of the upper end of blocking lever 1-8 from projection 17:: renders spring 26 effective to raise blocking lever 18 and to turn switch actuator 19 in counter clockwise direction into its operative position depressing button 20a and closing switch 26 so that electromagnetic means 21 is energized and moves locking lever 23 to a position releasing the locking balls 24 permitting operation of all keys 28, 29 and type levers of the machine. When the single margin control key 1 is released by the operator, spring 6a pulls link 6 downward so that spring 15d can turn intermediate lever 17 in clockwise direction, resulting in the raising of projection 17a permitting turning of blocking lever 18 to the position illustrated in FIG. 2 under the action of spring 26. When the carriage moves a few steps to the right during typing of additional letters, projection 12 passes to the right of stop lever 13. When the carriage is again returned, projection 12 moves over inclined face 13a so that lever 13 performs only a short pivotal movement during which switch 20 is momentarily closed.
The slot 18b in which link 25 is located provides a lost-motion connection so that upon operation of key 1, blocking lever 18 is not immediately turned to release projection 17a.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of margin setting and releasing arrangements'dilfering from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in margin setting and releasing device employing a single margin setting and releasing key which simultaneously effects unlocking of the type levers of the typewriter, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can be applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. Margin Setting and releasing device fora typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operat ing said locking means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of said carriage; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said operating means for causing release of said locking means to unlock the keys of the typewriter.
2. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including electromagnetic means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of the carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for caus ing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of said carriage; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop for being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said electromagnetic means to control the same for causing release of said locking means to unlock the keys of the typewriter.
3. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and'including spring means tending to actuate said locking means to lock the keys of the typewriter and electromagnetic means connected to said locking means to operate said locking means to unlock the keys when said electromagnetic means is energized, said electromagnetic means including a normally closed switch and being normally energized so that the keys are normally unlocked; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage of the typewriter; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said switch means to open the same for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said switch means to close the same to energize said electromagnetic means so that said locking means are operated to unlock the keys of the typewriter.
4. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising; in combination, a carriage, a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element suitable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; movable stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage; blocking means adapted to be mounted on the frame, movable between a blocking position for blocking said stop means and a releasing position releasing said stop means; and a single margin setting and releasing member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said blocking means for moving the same to said releasing position.
5. Margin setting and releasing device for typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to' and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop, a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop,
said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; blocking means movable between a normal blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, operatively connected to said blocking means for moving the same to said shifted releasing position, and operatively connected to said operating means for causing release of said locking means to unlock the keys of the typewriter.
6. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; blocking means movable to a blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means, said blocking means being operatively connected to said operating means to cause actuation of said locking means when said blocking means moves to said blocking position and to effect release of said locking means in said shifted releasing position; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said blocking means for shifting the same out of said blocking position to said releasing position for effecting unlocking of the keys.
7. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including electromagnetic means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of the carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of said blocking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of said carriage; blocking means movable between a normal blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, operatively connected to said blocking means for moving the same to said shifted releasing position, and operatively connected to said electromagnetic means to control the same for causing release of said locking means to unlock the keys of the typewriter.
8. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including spring means tending to actuate said locking means to lock the keys of the typewriter and electromagnetic means connected to said locking means to operate said locking means to unlock the keys when said electromagnetic means is energized, said electromagnetic means including a normally closed switch and being normally energized so that the keys are normally unlocked; a stationary frame; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carn'age, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said switch means to open the same for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; blocking means movable between a normal blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, operatively connected to said blocking means for moving the same to said shifted releasing position, and operatively connected to said switch means to close the same to energize said electromagnetic means so that said locking means are operated to unlock the keys of the typewriter.

Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including electromagnetic means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; blocking means movable to a blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means, said blocking means being operatively connected to said operating means to cause actuation of said locking means when said blocking means moves to said blocking position and to effect release of said locking means in said shifted releasing position; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, operatively connected to said blocking means for shifting the same out of said blocking position to said releasing position, and operatively connected to said electromagnetic means for effecting unlocking of the keys.

Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including spring means tending to actuate said locking means to lock the keys of the typewriter and electromagnetic means connected to said locking means to operate said locking means to unlock the keys when said electromagnetic means is energized, said electromagnetic means including a normally closed switch and being normally energized so that the keys are normally unlocked; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including a element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop means mounted on said stationary frame for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage, said stop means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said stop means being operatively connected to said switch means to open the same for causing actuation of said locking means when said stop means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop means in an end position of the carriage; blocking means movable to a blocking position for blocking said stop means in said actuated position, and a shifted releasing position releasing said stop means, said blocking means being operatively connected to said switch means to open the same to cause actuation of said locking means when said blocking means moves to said blocking position and to effect release of said locking means in said shifted releasing position; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said blocking means for shiftable the same out of said blocking position to said releasing position for effecting unlocking of the keys.
ll. Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; stop lever means mounted on said stationary frame and having an oblique guide face for engaging said margin stop in an end position of the carriage, said stop lever means being shiftable from a normal position to an actuated position, and being shifted to said actuated position upon engagement with said margin stop, said guide face being engaged by said margin stop during return movement of said carriage, said stop means being operatively connected to said operating means for causing actuation of'said locking means when said stop lever means is shifted to said actuated position so that the keys of the typewriter are locked when said margin stop engages said stop lever means in an end position of the carriage; and a single margin control member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop and being operable for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said operating means for causing release of said locking means to unlock the keys of the typewriter.

Margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter, comprising, in combination, a carriage; a guide bar mounted on the carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element shiftable to and from a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; movable stop lever means mounted on said stationary frame and having an oblique guide face for engaging said margin stop in an end position of said carriage; blocking lever means adapted to be mounted on the frame movable between a blocking position for blocking said stop lever means so that said stop lever means block the carriage movement, said blocking lever means being turnable to a releasing position releasing said stop lever means so that said margin stop is free to move past said stop lever means; and a single margin setting and releasing member operatively connected to said shiftable element of said margin stop for moving the same to said free position, and operatively connected to said blocking lever means for turning the same to said releasing position for permitting carriage movement beyond said end position.

A margin setting and releasing device as set forth in claim 12 and including a linkage means for connecting said margin setting and releasing member with said margin stop, said linkage means including a release lever cooperating at one end thereof with said margin stop, a link articulated to the other end of said release lever, a push rod abutting said link, articulated means connecting said push rod with said margin setting and releasing member, and a spring connected to said release lever and urging the same to press said link against said push rod so that said margin setting and releasing member operates said release lever against the action of said spring to move said release lever to a releasing position in which said one end of the same engages said margin stop; and wherein said margin stop is shifted to said free position when engaged by said release lever under control of said margin setting and releasing member.

A margin setting and releasing device as set forth in claim 12 and including a linkage means for connecting said margin setting and releasing member with said margin stop, said linkage means including a release lever cooperating at one end thereof with said margin stop, a link articulated to the other end of said release lever, a push rod abutting said link, articulated means connecting said push rod with said margin setting and releasing member, and a spring connected to said release lever and urging the same to press said link against said push rod so that said margin setting and releasing member operates said release lever against the action of said spring to move said release lever to a releasing position in which said one end of the same engages said margin stop; wherein said margin stop is shifted to said free position when engaged by said release lever under control of said margin setting and releasing member; and including a rod connected to said stop lever means for movement therewith, and an intermediate lever connected to said rod and having a portion abutting said blocking lever means at one end of the same so that said blocking lever means is shifted in longitudinal direction to said blocking position, and, when turned to said releasing position, moves out of engagement with said portion of said intermediate lever, said link and said intermediate lever being operatively connected for simultaneous movement in one direction.

A margin setting and releasing device as set forth in claim 14 wherein said margin stop has a projecting ridge; and wherein said release lever has a recess matching said ridge and engaging the same in said releasing position of said release lever so that said margin stop is held stationary while said guide bar is moved with the carriage to change the position of the margin stop.
16. Margin control device for a typewriter comprising,
in combination, locking means for locking the keys of the typewriter; operating means for operating said locking means and including spring means and electromagnetic means connected to said locking means, said electromagnetic means including switch means; a carriage; a guide bar mounted on said carriage; a margin stop normally fixedly connected to said guide bar and including an element resiliently shiftable transversely to the same to a free position permitting relative movement between said guide bar and said margin stop; a stationary frame; a stop lever means turnably mounted on said frame and having a face for engaging said margin stop, said stop lever means being turned to an actuated position upon engagement of said face with said margin stop during carriage movement; a switch actuator turnably mounted on said frame for movement between an operative position actuating said switch means and an inoperative position releasing the same; a blocking lever turnably mounted on said switch actuator and being guided in said frame for longitudinal movement to turn said switch actuator between said positions of the same; spring means connecting said blocking lever with said switch actuator; means connecting said stop lever means with said blocking lever and including an intermediate lever turnably mounted on said frame and having one end abutting one end of said blocking lever so that movement of said stop lever means to said actuated position effects longitudinal movement of said blocking lever and turning of said switch actuator for causing locking of the keys of the typewriter when said margin stop shifts said stop lever means to said actuated position; a single margin setting and releasing member operatively connected to said blocking lever for turning the same to a releasing position releasing said intermediate lever and turning said switch actuator to one of said positions; and a linkage connecting in one end position of said carriage said margin setting and releasing member with said shiftable element of said margin stop so that operation of said margin setting and releasing member shifts said shiftable element of said margin stop to said free position.
17. A device as set forth in claim 16 and including another margin stop normally locked to said bar and transversely shiftable to a free position, said other margin stop having a projection abutting said stop lever means in another end position of the carriage; said linkage connecting said margin setting and releasing member with said other margin stop in the other end position of the carriage.
18. A device as set forth in claim 17, wherein each margin stop has a projection; and wherein said linkage includes a release lever formed with a recess matching said projections for holding any one of said margin stops while said bar is shifted with said carriage for setting the margin stop.
19. A margin setting and releasing device for a typewriter as set forth in claim 16, wherein said linkage includes a release lever cooperating with said margin stop, a link articulated to said release lever and being operatively connected to said intermediate lever for movement with the same in one direction, a push rod abutting said link, articulated means connecting said push rod with said margin setting and releasing member, and a spring for urging said link against said push rod so that said margin setting and releasing member operates said release lever against the action of said spring to move said margin stop to said free position.
