I TOE WEIGHT. No. 303,098, Patented Aug. 5, 1884:
i; 11 14- III/WW1 WITNESSES UNITED STATES P TENT rricn,
QUINTEN M. YOUNGS, OF U'IIOA, NEW YORK.
TOE-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.303,098, dated August 5, 1884. Application filed April 23, 1884, 7 (N modclil ings.
My invention pertains to an improvement in toe-weights, and it consists in a toe-weight having a tongue and threaded spur cast in tegral therewith, the tongue being provided with an orifice for reception of a screw, and
in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views in perspective of my invention. Figs. 3 and 4: are perspectives of a modification thereof, and Fig. 5 is also a modification.
"The object ofmy invention is to provide a toe-weight which maybe readily secured to thehorses hoof in such manner that the shoe,
with the weight, on itsdescent in trotting may v concaved on its inner face, and inclined to conform to the contour of the horses hoof, and project vertically downward from the weight A the tongue B, wherein is provided the screw-orifice G for reception of the screw D. The tongue B is provided with the slight shoulder B, which abuts against the front edge of the horseshoe at its center, and has cast integral therewith the spur E, which is provided with a female screw threaded groove, 0, adapted to the male screw D. The spur E is inserted into a coincident recess formed on the bottom of the hoof, and in such manner as to be flush with the inner side of the horseshoe, in order that the toe-weight may be as if integral with the horseshoe when it strikes the earth. The female screw-threaded groove 0 is designed, conjointly with a coincidentscrew-threaded groove or recess, (formed in the bottom of the hoof by ordinary mechanical expedient-J to furnish a suitable female-screw orifice for insertion of the screw D, which thus holds the toe-weight rigidly against the hoof.
In the construction of my toe-weight I do not confine myself to a single spur, as it is obvious that two may be employed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; nor do I deem it radically essential that they be screwihreaded, as aforesaid, as it is an obvious modification to insert the screw through the eye F and into the hoof without the aid of screw-thread on the spur, although it would be requisite in such case to slightly elevate the screw-orifice in a line obliquely or vertically above its present position, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A toe-weight having the orificed tongue B and'screw-threaded spur E, adapted to the coincident screw D, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. A toe-weight consisting of the weight A, orificed tongue B, and threaded spur E, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. A toe-weight having the tongue 13, screworifice (l, and spur E, constructed and arranged to prevent lateral strain upon the hoof, substantially as shown and described.
4. A; toeweight having the tongue B, screworifice O, and spur E, constructed and arranged to prevent the spur E from coming out of or loosening from the hoof, substantially asshown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
QUINTEN M. YOUNGS.
