The primary object of the invention is the provision of a generally superior and more easily and conveniently used urinal for bed patients and others, which eliminates the requirement for patients to be moved in beds, and which is readily applied either by a patient or an attendant.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a portable urinal of the character indicated above which has a reversible handle, to be turned one way for selfapplication of the urinal and another way when the urinal is applied by an attendant.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a portable urinal of the character indicated above, which has a flexible bag of novel and improved form having a neck shaped for better conformance to the body of the user, the neck being partially rigidified, and reinforced by a rigid member, on which the handle is mounted.

Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.

FIGURE 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a urinal of the present invention, showing the handle in position for application of the urinal by an attendant, and for storage;

FIGURE 2 is a left-hand end elevation of FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 3 is an elevation of the opposite side of the urinal, showing the handle in self-service position; and

FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical transverse section taken on the line 44 of FIGURE 3.

Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the illustrated urinal comprises a bag which is a hollow horizontally or longitudinally elongated, oval cross section form of flexible material which flares from a smaller closed end 12 to a larger open end 14, the bag increasing in width and in height from the closed end 12 to the open end 14. Further, the bag has a straight bottom wall 16 which is normally horizontal, and a straight topwall 18 which is angled upwardly from the closed end of the bag to its open end.

The open end 14 of the bag 10 has thereon a hollow oval neck 20 which is smaller in diameter than the open end 14 but has substantially the same oval geometrical cross section as the open or larger end of 16. The bottom wall 16 is connected to the inwardly declining bottom wall 22 of the neck 20 by an upwardly directed wall portion 24. The side edges of the mouth of the neck 20 are slightly concavo, as indicated at 26, and the mount is entirely surrounded by a continuous external bead 28.

An oval rigid ring has an oval opening 32 which is conformably circumposed on the neck 20, with the ring in substantially perpendicular position relative to the bag bottom wall 16, is spaced inwardly from the head 28, and is secured on the neck 20 by any suitable means.

An upstanding radial stud 34, fixed on and integral with the top of the ring 30 is formed with an enlarged diameter spherical head or ball 36, and above the head with an outstanding and surrounding annular stop flange 38 which is spaced from the top of the head 36. The underside of the stop flange 38 is preferably upwardly bevelled, as indicated at 40.

F 3,030,636 Patented Apr. 24, 1962 A preferably straight rigid and longitudinally elongated handle 42 is not substantially longer than the distance between the stud 34 and the smaller end of the bag, has an annular socket 44 on one end, whose side wall is formed with a concave inner surface 46 which is conformably and rotatably engaged on the ball 36, as shown in FIG- URE 4, so that the handle 42 is secured to the stud 34 and can rotate and swivel relative to the stud, for placing the handle spacedly along the top wall 18 of the bag, in position to be grasped by an attendant for applying the urinal to a patient, as shown in FIGURE 1; or extending longitudinally outwardly beyond the neck 20, as shown in FIGURE 3, in a position to be grasped by the patient for self-application of the urinal- The stop flange 38 serves to limit upwardly pivoting of the, handle 42, be-

' 48 on the handle near its free end 50, and an upstanding loop 52 on the top wall 18 beneath the book 48, as shown in FIGURE 1.

It will be seen from the foregoing that, while the bag 10 is of flexible and hence yielding material, such as rubber, which provides comfortable contact with a patient, as is also the mouth end portion of the neck 20, the presence of the rigid ring 30 serves not only to provide a stable and secure mounting for the handle 42, but serves also to hold the mouth of the neck 20 open and in effective gentle pressure contact with the body of the patient around the organ.

Although there have been shown and described herein preferred forms of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.

What is claimed is:

1. A portable urinal having a bag having a flexible open neck on an end thereof, an elongated rigid handle, and reinforcing means pivotally mounting the handle at one end on a portion of the neck, with the handle extending longitudinally outwardly beyond the neck, said neck terminating in a month, said reinforcing means comprising a rigid ring surrounding and fixed on the neck at a location spaced inwardly from said mouth.

A portable urinal having a bag having a flexible open neck on one end thereof, an elongated rigid handle, and reinforcing means pivotally mounting the handle at one end on a portion of the neck, said handle normally extending longitudinally outwardly beyond the neck, said neck terminating in a month, said reinforcing means comprising a rigid ring surrounding and fixed on the neck at a location spaced inwardly from said month, said bag having a top wall and said ring having a top portion, said handle being rotatably mounted on the top portion of the ring, and retaining means on the bag top wall for holding the handle in a longitudinally inwardly extending position along said top wall.

A portable urinal comprising an elongated bag having a reduced diameter open neck on one end thereof, an elongated rigid handle pivoted at one end on the upper side of the neck, said handle being adapted to be pivoted to a storage position overlying the bag and to be pivoted to an operative position extending longitudinally outwardly tbeyond said neck, a rigid ring circumposedon and secured to the neck, said ring having an upstanding stud having an enlarged diameter head on its upper end, said one end of the handle having a socket loosely and pivotally receiving the stud below said head.
