FRUIT-CASE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,303, dated October 9, 1860.
To all whom. t may concer/t:
Be it known that we, CHAELEs DooLl'rrLE, of Oswego. in the county of Oswego and State of New York, and ALFRED CARSON, of the city, county, and State of New York7 have invented a new and improved receptacle for transporting fruit and other articles or substances which are liable to be bruised or otherwise injured in being moved or transported in ordinary receptacles 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of our invention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a case or box, which may be of rectangular or other proper form, and constructed of wood, metal, or other suitable material. a lid, a, and within the case or box there is placed a box or receptacle, B, which may correspond in form to the case or box A, but sufiiciently smaller to admit of a space, b, of about equal width all around the receptacle. The receptacle B is secured in proper position within the case or box A by means of springs C. rllhese springs may be constructed of india-rubber (gum) or other suitable elastic material, and their outer ends are connected to the sides of the ease or box at about their centers, the inner ends of the springs being attached to about the center of the sides of the receptacle B. One or more springs may be attached to each side of the receptacle. The springs keep the receptacle suspended within the case or box A, and admit of its springing both vertically and laterally, so that all concussions and sudden jars to which the case or box A may be subjected during transportation or handling will not be transmitted to the receptacle B and its contents.
This case or box A is provided with The receptacle may be provided with a lid, c, and have within it any suitable shelving, partitions, or small boxes, that may be required for the purpose of holding or packing the contents within the receptacle.
In the lower part of the case or box A there is placed a partition plate, d. This plate rests on studs or stumps con the bottom of the case or box A, said studs or stumps being sufficiently high to form a chamber, f, below the plate d to receive ice. The plate d is a trifle smaller in area than the bottom of the case or box, so as to allow a communication between the chamber f and the space b within the case or box A. The plate may, if necessary, be perforated, to eitect the same result. The plate may be prevented from casually moving from a proper position by means of springs g, attached to the inner sides of the case or box A and extending down to the plate.
In certain cases-as, for inst-ance, in warm weather, when fruit is being transported-the ice-chamber will be found very important. YVhen not required, the plate d may be removed, if desired, by detaching and lifting out the receptacle B from the case or box A. The chamber f is supplied with ice in this way, and the springs C should be so arranged that they may be readily detached from the case or box A or receptacle B in order to admit of the ready removal of the latter.
