(Cl. 229-34) This invention relates to improvement in a knockeddown internally shouldered cover or lid for a cardboard box or carton.
Broadly internally shouldered carton parts, covers or lids, are well known but said carton parts, in the past, were either of a complicated construction, or difficult of setting up or providing relatively insecure constructions with the liability of the said cover shifting ofi of its shoulder and completely enveloping the box or carton.
The principal object, therefore, of the present invention is the provision of a cover or lid having a shoulder of considerable area which cannot be shifted or moved from the edge of the box or carton with which it is engaged.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an internally shouldered box or carton part. which can be readily set up from a knocked-down condition without appreciable additional time over that required to set up an ordinary four walled carton from its knocked down condition.
Increasing use is being made of machines for setting up box or carton parts and internally shouldered box parts as heretofore known and used were almost impossible of set up by said machines while that of the present invention admirably lends itself for such an operation.
It is, therefore, a further object of this invention the provision of an internally shouldered box or carton part that can be readily set up from a knocked-down condition on box setting up machinery.
A still further and specific objection of the present invention is the provision of a knocked-down box part which can be readily set up to provide a shoulder internally thereof for use with hollow wall boxes or cartons A and in which the shoulder has an effective area com-' parable to the hollow wall face in properly positioning the parts with respect to one another.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.
The internally shouldered box part, lid or cover, as illustrated in the preferred form in FIG. 1 comprises a single blank having centrally thereof the main or cover panel 15 having its edges defined by score or fold'lines 16, 17, 18 and 19. For purposes of description the score or fold lines 16 and 18 may be considered as the sides of the said cover and said score or fold lines integrally, hingedly, connected with the panel 15 similar extensions 20. Again, and for the purpose of description, the score fold lines 17 and 19 may be considered the ends of the cover or lid and said score or fold lines again integrally, hingedly, connect with the panel 15 similar extensions 21 which in the erected box part form end walls.
' Since each of the side walls extensions are substantially identical with one another only one of them will be described in detail and said extension includes a-score or fold line 22 parallel with its attaching score or fold line 16 or 18 thereby providing in said extension parallel panels 23 and 24. In the erected carton part the panel 23 forms the side wall outer wall member and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 25 or 26 which conveniently are continuations of the end scores 17 and 19. Again, in the erected carton part the panel 24 forms the side wall inner wall member and has its outer corners biased or angularly cut as at 27 and 28 which constitutes locks for the end walls as will presently be made clean The side wall outer Wall member or panel 23 has integrally, hingedly, connected to its ends through the score or fold lines 25 or 26 corner pieces 29 and 30 which in the erected carton are disposed transversing of the main or cover panel 15.
The end wall extensions 21, similar to side wall extensions 20, are each substantially duplicates of oneanother, wherefore, a description of one of them will suffice for the both.
Accordingly the said end wall extension is provided with a score or fold line 31 substantially parallel with its extension attaching score or fold line 17 or 19 thereby providing the end wall extension panels 32 and 33.

The end wall outer wall member or panel 32 through its ends score or fold lines 34 and 35 has integrally, hingedly, connected therewith the corner pieces 29 and 39. The said corner pieces 29 and 30 are respectively provided with a diagonal score or fold line 43 and 44 through which said corner pieces may be folded on themselves bellowswise and, as will presently be made clear, while in this folded condition are disposed transversely by the main or cover panel 15.
The end wall inner wall member or panel 33 has integrally, hingedly, connected to its ends through the score or fold lines 39 or 46 similar flaps 45 and 46 which are substantially identical in their construction. Each of said flaps 45 and 46 is provided transversely thereof with parallel score or fold lines 47, 48 and 49 thereby forming in said flaps between its hinge or fold lines 39 or 40 and the free end thereof panels 50, 51, 52 and 53 with said panel 53 being of considerably greater width than the other panels of the fiap. The said flaps 45 and 46 are adapted to be arranged to provide an internal shoulder for the box part and since the said flaps are of less width than the width of the box part inner wall member or panel 33 the said shoulders would be beiow the free end of the box part end wall.
The end wall inner wall member or panel 33 through its ends defining portions 37 and 38 has integrally, hingedly, connected therewith a triangular shaped lug 54 and 55 with each of said lugs having its one face 56 extending angularly of the end portions 41 and 42 of the end wall. Said lugs 54 and 55 constitute lockin" lugs which cooperate through their angular faces 56 with the side walls inner wall members biased corners 27 and 28 in locking the carton walls in their erected positions.
After the carton blank has been cut and scored, as above set forth, the side walls inner wall members or panels have applied thereto adhesive 57 whereupon there are folded on their score or fold lines 22 into face contact with the side walls inner wall members or panels 23. Simultaneously, the panels 53 of the internal shoulder forming flaps 45 and 46 have adhesive applied to them in the area illustrated in FIG. 1 leaving the portion 59 of each of said panels 53 free of adhesive. After the application of the adhesive 55 said flaps 4S and 46 are respectively folded on its score or fold line 48 to bring the adhesive 58 into contact with the inner face of end wall inner wall member or panel 33 in zones inwardly of the score or fold lines 39 and 40 and downwardly of the said flaps 45 and 46 and with said flaps portions outwardly of their score or fold lines 48 having the position indicated by phantom lines 60 in FIG. 1.
It is in this knocked-down condition of the box part blank that it is shipped to the user for erection.
The user in desiring to erect the box part does so by first raising the side walls from their outwardly extending positions to be upright or normal to the main or cover panel 15. The said side walls are now in the positions of the side walls in FIG. 2- and ready to have the end walls and internal shoulders set up.
The user now raises, successively, the end wall extensions while at the same time inwardly folding the corner pieces 29 and 30 on their diagonal score or fold lines 43 and 44 until the panels 32 and 33 of said end walls upstand normal to the main or cover panel 15. The user then applies pressure to the ends of the knocked-down fiaps, namely the end as represented for the score or fold lines 48, thereby causing said knocked-down flaps to be opened outwardly of the box or carton into a substantial rectangular form such as illustrated in phantom lines at the left of FIG. 2 and in solid lines in the upper corner of said FIG. 2. The end wall inner wall member or panel 33 is then folded inwardly of the box or carton on the score or fold line 31 thereby engaging said outer corners, score or fold line 48, with the inner surface of the erected side walls and thereby maintaining said flaps in their shoulder forming positions as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3.
The inward folding of the end wall inner wall member or panel 33 causes the locking flaps 54 and 55 to be actuated on the score or fold lines 36 and 37 and 38 to ride on the inner surfaces of the opposed erected side walls. Such movement of the end walls inner wall members is continued until said locking lugs 54 and 55 have their inelined face 56 disposed behind the locking surfaces 27 and 28 of the side wall inner wall members whereupon the carton part is in its fully erected position as illustrated for the upper right hand end thereof in FIG. 2.
The modification of the carton part or lid illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5 discloses that said modification consists, essentially, in providing in the side wall extension 20' in its inner wall member or panel 24' provided with its corner angularly cut out, as at 61, thereby providing a vertical shoulder 62 utilized, as will presently be made clear, as a locking shoulder for retaining the side and end walls in their erected positions as well as for retaining the carton part internal shoulder in operative position.
The blank in FIG. 4 is further modified in that its end wall inner wall member or panel 33' has a relatively short flap 63 integrally, hingedly, connected therewith through its end edge defining score or fold line 39. The said flap 63 is provided with a score or fold line 64 through which there is integrally, hingedly, connected therewith :1 lug 65 cut from the said end wall inner wall member or panel 33. The lug 65 has its one end formed by an angular cut line 66 and its other end formed by an angular score or fold line 67, the said score or fold line 67 connecting with the lug 65 a brace 68.
In the modification illustrated in the blank of FIG. 6 and the erected carton part corner in FIG. 7, the side wall inner wall member or panel 24" is provided with t a deeper corner cut out 61' whereby it has a deeper shoulder 62. in addition the blank of FIG. 6 has the brace lug 68 of greater length than the score or fold line 67, thereby requiring the removal of a corner indicated by the cut line 69 from the end wall inner wall member or panel 33". As will presently be made clear the lug 68' is utilized as a locking lug for the carton part internal shoulder as well as elfecting a bracing thereof.
It is to be understood that the carton part full blank is symmetrical having four corner portions as illustrated in FIG. 4, or as illustrated in FIG. 6, and that after being cut and scored as a complete blank they, respectively, have adhesive 57 applied to their side walls inner wall members whereupon said side walls inner wall members are folded on the score or fold lines 22 into face contact with the side walls inner wall members or panels 23.
It is in this knocked-down condition that the said blanks are shipped to the users.
The user in desiring to set up the carton part from either of the blanks of FIGS. 4 or 6 does so by following the same steps as above set forth in connection with the blank of FIG. 1, namely, raising the knocked-down side walls to be upright or normal to the main or cover panel 15 with the end wall extensions 21 or 21", respectively, normal to the said main or cover panel 15 and after having the corner pieces inwardly folded on themselves.
In erecting the end walls of the blank of FIG. 4 the user first outwardly, downwardly, as seen in FIG. 4, turns the flaps 63 whereupon the end wall inner wall member is folded on the score or fold line 31 to be interiorly of the carton part. The lug 65 is thereupon turned to be at right angles to the fiap 63 and brace 68 is further turned, downwardly, to be at right angles to said flap 65 whereupon the inner wall member or panel 33 is actuated into face contact with the outer wall member or panel 32 at which time the outer edge 70 of the flap 63 snaps behind the shoulder 62 of the side wall inner wall member 24' for locking the walls in their upright and operative positions and at the same time locking the flap 63 in its operative position as illustrated in FIG. 5.
In the setting up of the modification in FIG. 6 the same steps are followed except that the locking lug 68' instead of being turned at right angles downwardly with respect to the lug 65 is turned upwardly and is disposed in a locking position between the shoulder 62 and the corner of the erected carton part as illustrated in FIG. 7.
In each of the modifications the lugs 68 and 68' act as braces for the internal shoulders, in the modification in FIGS. 4 and 5 the brace is against the main or cover panel 15 while in the modification in FIGS. 6 and 7 the brace is between the said flap 65 and the shoulder of the side wall inner wall member as provided by the cut 61' since the said lug 68' will prevent any bending or deflection of the lug 65 since said lug 68' has no where to go if such a deflection of the lug 65 were attempted.
Each of the carton parts or lids or covers as illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 7, inclusive, is usable with a box or carton, per se, which is telescoped by the said carton part side and end walls down to the point where the carton, per se, engages the internal shoulders. As noted above the said internally shouldered carton part is particularly adapted for use with a box or carton having side and end walls formed with spaced apart wall members and a bridging top wall member. Such a carton, per se, is illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9 and will now be briefly described and which carton is more completely described in applicants pending application Serial Number 432,756, filed May 27, 1954.
Briefly the box or carton illustrated in FIG. 9 is setup from the blank of FIG. 8 and comprises a main or bottom panel 71 to which is integrally, hingedly, connected substantially identical side walls each including an outer wall member 72, a top wall member 73, an inner wall member 74 and a glue flap 75, each integrally, hingedly, connected to one another as illustrated in FIG. 9, and wherein said hinge connections is illustrated in the form of dash lines.
The box or carton of FIG. 9 is provided with end walls of spaced apart construction with each said end walls comprising an outer wall member 76, a top wall member 77, an inner wall member 78 and a spacing flap 79, and which wall members and spacing flap are integrally, hingedly, connected to one another through score or fold lines, illustrated as dash lines in PEG. 8.
Each of the side walls is provided at the opposite ends of its wall members with extensions which in the erected carton form tucking flaps each of an inverted U-shape in cross-section and each comprising parallel spaced apart vertical flaps 80 and 81 having their upper edges joined or connected by horizontal flap 82. Said tucking flaps and the side wall top wall members each has projected therefrom in the plane thereof, into the interior of the erected box or carton, align lugs respectively indicated at 33 and 84 which are enfolded by the end walls wall members and he immediately below said end walls top wall members 77.
The fully erected box or carton from the blank of FIG. 8 is believed obvious from FIG. 4 and it will be noted that relatively wide surfaces are provided at the upper ends of the box or carton side and end walls.
In FIG. 10 there is illustrated one end of a box or carton such as illustrated in FIG. 9 and there is likewise illustrated an end of an erected box part or cover such as illustrated in FIG. 2 with the said parts in an operative position so that the said box or carton, per se, may be embraced by the box or carton part or lid of FIG. 2 and which telescoping will be effected until the lower or free ends of the internal shoulders engage the upper surface of the box or carton end walls top wall members 77.
It will be understood from FIGS. 5 and 7 that they can be readily substituted for the carton part illustrated in FIG. 10 and that in each instance a shoulder within each corner of the carton part or lid will engage a similar 6 corner of the box or carton, per se, for effecting a package wherein the main or cover panel 15 of the lid is upwardly spaced from the upper ends of the box or carton, per se, so that no interference is effected between the goods within the box or carton and the covering panel of its lid.
The modified box or carton part illustrated in FIGS. 11 to 14, inclusive, consists in merely changing the end wall inner wall members or panels 32' to have their ends defined by cut lines and 86 thereby severing the corner pieces 29 and 3% from said end walls outer wall members or panels.
The blank of FIG. 11 after having been cut and scored has the adhesive 57 applied to the side walls inner wall members or panels 24 as well as the adhesive 58 applied to the panel 53 of the flap 45 and the said panels 24 and flap 45 folded as above set forth and as illustrated in the lower side of the blank in FIG. 11. At this time, although not necessary, the corner pieces 29 and 3%) are folded on themselves on their respective diagonal score or fold lines 43 and 44 for causing the portion 87, that between the score or fold lines 43 and 44 and end Walls outer Wall members out lines 85 and 86, of each corner piece to be folded on its said score line 43 and 44 and superimposed on the remaining portion 83, that between said score or fold lines 43 and 44 and the side walls outer wall members end score or fold lines 25 and 26, of its corner piece and have adhesive 89 applied to the now exposed surfaces of said corner pieces portions 37, as illustrated in the lower portion of the blank in FIG. 11. At this time the side wall extensions 24 are each folded inwardly on its score or fold line 16 or 18 for bringing the adhesive 89 into face contact with the inner surface of the end walls outer wall members or panels 32'. The blank of FIG. 11 is now in its fully carton part knocked-down position as illustrated in FIG. 12, and it is in this condition that the carton part is shipped to the user.
The box or carton part in PEG. 12 is ideal for setting-up by box or carton setting-up machinery even though it can be readily set up manually. In order to set up the box or carton part from FIG. 12 the user merely raises the end wall extensions 21 on their connecting score or fold lines 17 and 19 and which operation efiects the straightening out of the corner pieces 29 and 3t) and automatically sets up the side walls. This operation is clearly illustrated in the upper end of FIG. 13. It is to be understood that in machine operation each end wall extension is simultaneously raised to the position illustrated, as noted above, in the upper end of said FIG. 13.
The setting-up machine would then continue to fold the end wall inner wall member or panel 33 on the score or fold line 31 toward the interior of the box or carton part which would bring the internal shoulder forming flap and the locking lugs 54 and 55 onto the upper surface of the box or carton part side walls as clearly illustrated by the lower end of FIG. 13. Continued interior movement of the end walls inner wall members, their score or fold lines 31, would cause the said folded internal shoulder flaps 45 to be opened up by the carton part side Walls and at the same time would position the looking lugs 54 and 55 to be at right angles with respect to the said end walls inner wall members 33. The partial opening up of the said internal shoulder forming flaps is illustrated in the lower end of FIG. 14. Continued inward folding of the said box or carton part end walls inner wall members to their final positions snap the said walls locking lugs 54 and 55 into their operative positions behind the locking edges 27 and 28 of the side walls inner wall members 24, as clearly illustrated in the upper end of P16. 14.
From the foregoing it will now be appreciated that there has been provided a box or carton lid or cover having an internal shoulder at the corners thereof which can be readily and economically set up from a knockeddown carton either manually or by box setting-up machine.
What is claimed is:
1. In a carton part formed from a single blank comprising a covering panel, side and end walls depending from said covering panel, each side and end wall including an inner wall member and an outer wall member, a tucking flap from each end of each side wall disposed transversely of the covering panel and enfolded between the end walls inner and outer wall members, and a shoulder forming flap integrally hingedly connected with each end wall inner wall member at points inwardly of the ends of said end walls, each flap including a plurality of panels in tandem outwardly of its end wall with one of said panels forming the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming flap with its end avail inner wall member and a second of said panels integrally, hingedly, connected with a glue flap, said glue flap in turn secured to the end wall inner wall member and with said hinge connection of the glue flap outwardly of the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming flap, said integrally hingedly connected panel and said glue flap hingedly secured panel inwardly angularly projecting from said end wall inner wall member at difierent angles from the end wall inner wall member with their inner ends connected to one another and with at least one of said panels extending toward and in contact with the adjacent side wall.
2. In a carton part formed from a single blank comprising a covering panel, side and end walls depending from said covering panel, each side and end wall including an inner wall member and an outer wall member, a tucking flap from each end of each side wall disposed transversely of the covering panel and enfolded between the end walls inner and outer wall members, and a shoulder forming flap integrally, hingedly connected with each end wall inner wall member at points inwardly of the ends of said end walls, each flap including a plurality of panels in tandem outwardly of its end wall with one of said panels forming the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming flap with its end wall inner wall member and a second of said panels integrally, hingedly, connected with a glue flap, said glue flap in turn secured to the end wall inner wall member and with said hinge connection of the glue flap outwardly of the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming fiap, said integrally hingedly connected panel and said glue flap hingedly secured panel inwardly angularly projecting .rom said end wall inner wall member at different angles from the end wall inner wall member with at least one of said panels extending toward and in contact with the side wall, and said shoulder forming flaps each including a panel connecting the inner ends of said hingedly connected panel and said glue flap secured panel.
3. In a carton part formed from a single blank comprising a covering panel, side and end walls depending from said covering panel, each side and end wall including an inner wall member and an outer wall member, a tucking flap from each end of each side wall disposed transversely of the covering panel and enfoldecl between the end walls inner and outer wall members, a shoulder forming flap integrally, hingedly, connected with each end wall inner wall member at points inwardly of the ends of said end walls, each flap including a plurality of panels in tandem outwardly of its end wall with one of said panels forming the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming flap with its end wall inner wall member and a second of said panels integrally, hingedly, connected with a glue flap, said glue flap in turn secured to the end wall inner wall member and with said hinge connection of the glue flap outwardly of the integral hinge connection of the shoulder forming flap, said integrally hingedly connected panel and said glue flap hingedly secured panel inwardly angulariy protecting from said end wall inner wall member at different angles from the end wall inner wall member with at least one of said panels extending toward and in contact with the adjacent side wall, and said shoulder forming flaps each including a panel connecting the inner ends of said intcgral hingedly connected panel and said glue flap secured panel, and cooperating means on said side and end walls inner wall members for locking the said walls in erected positions.
4. A knocked-down carton part comprising a covering panel, a side wall panel integrally, hingedly, connected with each of two opposed side edges of said covering panel and with said side walls panels superimposed upon said covering panel, a corner piece integrally, hingedly, connected with each end of each side wall panel with each corner piece folded on itself along a diagonal fold line and having a first portion in the plane of the side wall panel to which it is connected and a second portion below the first portion, an end wall extension integrally, hingedly, connected with each of the remaining end edges of the covering panel, each end wall extension including an inner wall member panel and an outer wall member panel with said folded corner pieces adjacent thereto disposed on the outer wall member panel and with said second portion of each corner piece secured to its end wall outer wall member panel, and a flap hingedly carried by each end wall inner wall member inwardly of the opposite ends thereof and including a plurality of panels in tandem outwardly of and beyond its said end wall member but with certain of said fiap panels superimposed on the remaining flap panels and with the outermost panel of the flap hingedly secured to its end wall inner wall member and said fiap adjusted upon erection of the carton part to have its panels through their hinge connection arranged with respect to one another for providing an internal shoulder extending from their hinge connections diagonally of the ends of the end wall inner wall members toward and in contact with the side walls.
5. A knocked-down carton part comprising a covering panel, a side wall panel integrally, hingedly, connected with each of two opposed side edges of said covering panel and with said side walls panels superimposed upon said covering panel, a corner piece integrally, hingedly, connected with each end of each side wall panel with each corner piece folded on itself along a diagonal fold line and having a first portion in the plane of the side wall panel to which it is connected and a second portion below the first portion, an end wall extension integrally. hingedly, connected with each of the remaining end edges of the covering panel, each end wall extension including an inner wall member panel and an outer wall member panel with said folded corner pieces adjacent thereto disposed on the outer wall member panel and with said second portion of each corner piece secured to its end wall outer wall member panel, a flap hingedly carried by each end wall inner wall member inwardly of the opposite ends thereof and including a plurality of panels in tandem outwardly of and beyond its said end wall member but with certain of said flap panels superimposed on the remaining flap panels and with the outermost panel of the flap hingedly secured to its end wall inner wall member and said flap adapted upon erection of the carton part to have its panels through their hinge connection arranged with respect to one another for provid ing an internal shoulder extending from their hinge connections diagonally of the ends of the end wall inner wall members toward and in contact with the side walls, said side walls panels each having disposed therebcneath and permanently connected therewith a side Wall inner wall member panel, said side walls inner wall members panels each having at its opposite ends a locking shoulder. and each end wall inner wall member panel having integrally, hingedly, connected with its opposite ends a locking flap adapted upon erection of the carton part to engage the side walls inner wall members panels locking shoulders.
