(Cl. 297252) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable seats for use particularly, although not necessarily, by hunters, fishermen and other sportsmen, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which may readily be mounted either on a convenient tree or on a boat seat.

Another very important object of the present invention is to provide a sportsmans seat of the aforementioned character comprising novel tree attaching means adapted to function as a back support when the device is used in a boat.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a sportsmans seat of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective View, showing a seat embodying the present invention mounted in a boat;

FIGURE 2 is a bottom plan view of the device;

FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view, showing the seat mounted on a tree;

FIGURE 5 is an enlarged view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of FIGURE 4;

FIGURE 6 is a view principally in vertical section through the upper end portion of one of the back posts; and,

FIGURE 7 is a view in horizontal section through an intermediate portion of one of the back posts.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a seat unit which is designated generally by reference character 8. The seat unit 8 includes a pair of spaced, parallel, longitudinal bars 9 of suitable tubular metal. A pair of spaced, parallel, transverse boards or slats 10 of suitable wood have their end portions rigidly secured on the tubular bars 9, as indicated at 11. The forward end portions of the tubular bars 9 are longitudinally split and the lower halves of said bars are downwardly and reversely bent to provide hooks 12 the purpose of which will be presently set forth.

Mounted on the rear of the seat unit 9 is a back rest 13. The back rest 13 comprises upturned elbows 14 which are threadedly mounted on the rear end portions of the tubular bars 9. Threadedly mounted in the upturned end portions of the elbows 14 is a pair of tubular metallic posts 15.

20 and 21. A chain 22 has one end connected to the hook 20. A hook 23 is provided on the other end of the chain 22.

It is thought that the use of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the device is to be used in a boat, as indicated at 27 in FIGURE 1 of the drawings, the unit 8 is positioned on a seat 28 of said boat. The hooks 12 are engaged beneath the front portion of the seat 28. One end of the chain 22 is engaged with. the hook 20. In the arrangement shown, the chain 22 is then engaged successively with the

17, 16, 21, 20, 18 and 19, leaving the other end portion of said chain hanging free. Thus, a back support 24 is provided for the occupant of the seat unit 8. Of course, the hooks 12 prevent the device from tipping backward. To mount the device on a tree, as indicated at 25 in FIGURES 4 and 5 of the drawings, the chain 22 is engaged, at one end, with the hook 20, at an intermediate point with the hook 21, then wrapped tightly around the tree and again engaged at an intermediate point, with said hook 20. The rear edge of the rear slat or board 10 abuts the tree 25 and is recessed, as indicated at 26, to accommodate said tree. The construction and arrangement is such that the tree 25 serves as a back rest. Under the weight of an occupant the seat unit 8 fulcrums and binds on the tree 25 and the rear portion of the chain 22 is drawn tightly around said tree in an obvious manner. Thus the

12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 constitute selective hook anchoring means for mounting of the seat on either a horizontal support (unit 8) and a vertical support (tree 25) in cooperation with the chain 22 which forms the back rest 24 or secures the seat to the vertically supporting tree.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A sportsmans seat comprising a seat unit, a pair of upstanding transversely spaced posts connected to rear portions of said seat unit, a connecting member carried by each post and disposed on the upper end portions of said posts, a hook secured to each of said posts and disposed intermediate the ends of said posts, a chain, said connecting members being operatively connected to portions of said chain spaced from each other, said chain being adapted to selectively encircle a tree to mount the seating unit on the tree or to engage said hooks to provide, in conjunction with the posts, a back rest for an occupant of the seat unit.

2. The combination of claim 1, said posts being separably connected to the rear portions of said seat unit.

3. The combination of claim 2, wherein. there are at least two vertically spaced hooks on each of said posts disposed beneath said connecting members, said hooks being adapted to operatively engage spaced portions of said chain.

4. The combination of claim 3, said seat unit having a seating member provided with front and rear sections, said rear sections having a recessed portion adapted to loosely engage an adjacent portion of a substantially upright support.

5. A sportsmans seat comprising: a seat unit, a pair of transversely spaced upstanding posts on the rear of said seat unit, vertically spaced hooks on said posts, and a chain connected at spaced points to certain of the hooks, said chain being adapted to selectively completely encircle a tree for mounting the seat unit thereon or to engage remaining hooks for providing, in conjunction with the posts, a back rest for an occupant of the seat unit.

A sportsmans seat construction comprising a pair of frame members having seat frame portions and rigid back frame portions, slat means interconnected throughout to the seat frame portions maintaining the frame members in spaced relation to each other, anchoring hook means carried by the frame member in protective relation, beneath a forward portion of the slat means and at upper ends of the back frame portions for selective anchoring to a horizontal support and a vertical support, and flexible means interconnected to the anchoring hock means on the back frame portions of both frame members for forming a back rest between the back frame portions when the seat is anchored to the horizontal support and encircling the vertical support for cooperating with the anchoring hook means to anchor the seat when supported by the vertical support.

7. The combination of claim 6, wherein said hook means includes integral hook formations on the seat frame portions disposed rearwardly of forward ends of said seat frame portions and vertically spaced hooks mounted on the back frame portions.
