No. 98,577 12 Claims. ((21. 125-11) My invention relates to a grinding wheel dressing apparatus for reproducing a contour on the grinding wheel from an enlarged contour or master form. More particularly, my invention relates to a contour grinding wheel dresser having a novel reducing mechanism employing a. polar coordinate system and giving the same results as a pantograph arrangement but without the mechanical disadvantages ofa pantograph arrangement. 7
in apparatus of the kind described, rigid support is required to avoid vibration which afiects accuracy, wear and smooth operation. It is also desired that ratios between the movement of the template or contour from follower and tool be readily and easily changed.
Where a wheel dresser to dress a small grinding wheel is used, weight and size make it diilicult to desigri'a dresser which can be attached to a small grinding wheel spindle without overloading the spindle and spindle housing.
It is therefore an object of my invention to provide apparatus of the kind described above having rigid support for moving parts, one that is free of vibration, which insures accuracy, minimizes wear and operates smoothly.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a grinding wheel dresser design which reduces the weight and size of the dresser to make it practical and useful for small size grinding wheel spindles.
Briefly, the apparatus made according to my invention includes a housing slide to be attached to the grinding wheel apparatus and having thereon a yoke support rotatably supporting a housing. Mounted within the housing is a tool slide and a follower slide movable parallel to each other. The tool slide, follower slide and housing are pivotally connected to each other by a link which determines the ratio of movement of the two slides Within the housing during dressing operations. The housing has attached to it a template support adapted to support a template which is engaged by a follower mounted onan extension of the follower slide. The tool is rotatably supported on the tool slide and the follower rotatably supported on the extension. A link mechanism is connected between the follower and the tool for determining angular movement of the follower and tool to position the dressing diamond of the tool during operation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Referring firstto FIGURES l to 4, inclusive, apparatus embodying my invention includes a housing slide 20 slidably mounted on slide guide 21 secured to any convenient part of the grinding wheel apparatus as by bolting. Adjustment of the housing slide 25 transversely of the wheel being dressed is accomplished by means of the micrometer adjustment screw 22 in a manner to be described.
The slide 20 is provided with a support or yoke 23 which pivotally supports the housing 24 at 23' ,in a manner to be described. Mounted within the housing are the follower and tool slides, which p'ivotally support the template follower 27 and the dressing tool 28.
Attached to the slide 29 is the template support plate 25 on which is supported the template 26. The follower and the too-l are connected together by the linking mechanism 29 so that the tool 28 can be rotated about its vertical axis to determine the angle of approach of the tool.
Housing and slides The housing containing the tool and follower slides comprises a lower portion in which the tool slide is mounted and an upper or' cover portion in which the follower slide is mounted. The upper portion of the housing is provided with an upwardly directed spindle received within a. bearing assembly supported on the housing support yoke. This arrangement rotatably supports the housing from the yoke. A link mechanism is pivotally connected to the slides and housing and results in parallel difierential movement of the slides when the follower is moved across the contour of thetemplate. This causes the tool to follow a contour on a reduced scale on the surface of the wheel being dressed in a manner to be described.
Referring to FIGS. 5, 6, and 7, the two-part housing 24 includes a lower portion or compartment 35 slidably supporting the tool slide 37 and the upper compartment or cover 36 slidably supporting the follower slide 33. A cover plate 39 closes the end, of the housing. The cover 36 is provided with a spindle 40 received within bearing support 23 supported by means of preloaded ball bearing assemblies 41 and 4-2, preloaded by spacers 43 and 44.
A dust cover 45 is provided and a dust seal ring 46 to protect the bearings 41 and 42 from dust and dirt.
The tool slide 37 is slidably mounted in housing portion 35 by means of ball bearing assemblies 50 and 51. The tool 28 is connected to the tool support 52, rotatably sup ported on the spindle 53 by ball bearing bushings 55 and 56. The spindle 53 is fastened to the tool slide 37.
The follower slide 38 is slidably mounted in the upper portion 36 of the housing by means of ball bearing assemblies 6i) and 61. The slide is provided with an arm or extension 62. This extension rotatably supports at its outer end the stylus or template follower 27 by means of the pivoting spindle 6-3, manually operated by the knob 64.
' causing rotation of the tool 28 when knob 64 is turned includes the link 70, disc 71, links 72, 73, members 74 and v 75 fixed together, and links 76, 77, coupled to the tool support 52. All of these links are pivoted at their ends to permit rotation of template follower 27, disc 71, elements 74 and 75 and the tool support 52.
secured to the Ratio mechanism As described above the follower slide 33 and tool slide 39 are movable parallel to each other. To reduce the contour on the template to that desired on the grinding wheel, I employ a novel link mechanism which is pivotally secured to the two slidesand the cover of the housing. By means of this arrangement the tool slide can be made to move through smaller distances than the follower both radially and transversely of the wheel being dressed as the housing is rotated about its pivot support during dressing operations.
Referring to FIGURES 5, 6, and 8, one end of the link 84) is pivotally secured to the follower slide 38 by means of a yoke 81 mounted in the bearing bushing 82. on slide 38 and supporting pivot pin 82'. The link pin 80 is pivotally and slidably connected to tool slide 37 by yoke 83 pivotally supported on slide 37 by pin 84' and ball bearing bushing 34. The link pin 80 is also pivotally and slidably connected to the cover 36 of the housing by means of yoke 85, pivotally supported in the ball bearing bushing 86, mounted on slide 87. The position of the yoke 85, slide 87 being slidable on keyway 87' can be adjusted toward or from the yoke 83 to vary the ratio of movement of the slides in a manner to be described, by means of the adjusting screw 88 threadedly secured to slide or block 87. Thus, there are three pivot points all in line at 82', 84', and 86.
As described above, the housing slide 28 can be adjusted along the slide guide 21 by means of the adjusting screw 22. Referring to FIGURES 9 and 11, the adjusting screw 22 is rotatably mounted on the housing 26 by the plate 0 and engages a nut 91 secured to slide guide 21. Rotation of the screw 22 by means of knurled knob 92 causes the housing slide and all parts thereon to move toward and from the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel 18 being dressed.
The ry 0f operati n Referring to FIGURES l2 and 13, the mechanism has a ratio of Q over P. P is the distance from the fixed pivot point 86' (on cover 36) to pivot 84' (on the tool slide 37) and Q is the distance from pivot point 86 to pivot 82' on the follower slide 38. As the pivot point 86 is moved so that Q becomes shorter or longer, the-ratio is changed accordingly, the ratio being the distance of Thus, regardless of the movement of slide 38, the tool movement is along one side of a triangle and in the same ratio.
The ratios can be varied by shifting the position of the pivot 86. In FIGURE 8, the yoke or block 85, as described above, is adjusted by micrometer screw 88 to change the pivot point 86'. I
In FIG. 14 a schematic diagram of the slides and pivot points correspond to those shown in the other figures particularly FIGURES 6, 8, 12, and 13.
The housing 24 is pivoted at 93 on the pivot ball bearing support assembly best shown in FIGURE 5. The pivot point 94 is the center line of the diamond radius of the tool 28, and the pivot point 95 is the center line of the follower radius. Pivot points or centers 93, 94, and 95 are all in a straight line. The distance from 93 to 94,
'and 93 to 95 is at all times a given ratio.
