(Cl. 131-182) This invention relates to a cigarette holder and more particularly a cigarette holder that has provision for the inclusion of a filtering element such as another cigarette or a specially designed filter cartridge.

It is a particular object of the invention to provide a cigarette holder with m ejector not only for a consumed cigarette but also for periodical removal of a used filtering element.

In cigarette holders known to me, the provision of consumed cigarette ejectors has involved the placement of elements within the bore of the tube which constitute an obstruction to ready cleaning of the tube and usually no provision is made for ready ejection of the filtering elements which often become soggy and difficult to handle when removing them.

In accordance with this invention I provide a filtering element engaging slide which is mounted on a tube but which can be readily and completely detached therefrom to remove a filtering element therefrom, leaving the bore of the tube corn le-tely unobstructed for ready and thorough cleaning. The'slide is so designed that it also can act as a consumed cigarette ejector either in and of itself or through the interposition of a contained filter cartridge.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a device which will operate as above described without interfering with proper draw, that is Without having such leakage through the tube as would deprive the smoker of the enjoyment of direct draw.

These and other objects of the invention will be more fully understood when considered in connection with the description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:

FIG. 1 is an exploded View of a preferred form of a cigarette holder embodying the invention;

FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional exploded view of some of the parts shown in FIG. 1 but also including a filtering element shown in elevation with a portion thereof broken away;

FIG. 3 is an enlarged detail cross-sectional view of the parts of FIGS. 1 and 2 in assembled relation;

FIG. 4 is an elevational view with parts thereof in section of the device of FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 shown in assembled relation;

FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of FIG. 3;

FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 6-6 of FIG. 3;

FIG. 7 is a sectional View of a modified form of slide; and

FIG. 8 is an elevational view, partly in section, of a modified form of the device.

As shown in FIG. 1, the cigarette holder comprises a tube It having at one end a cigarette receiving receptacle piece 11 and at the other end a mouth piece 12. As shown in FIG. 1, the tube it} has a slot 14 extending inwardly from the rear end thereof, which end is also threaded at 15 for retaining the mouth piece 12.

A threepiece slide assembly comprises an outer laterally arcuate piece 16 and an inner laterally arcuate piece 17 assembled on opposite sides of a separator piece 18 having a Width slightly less than the width of the slot 14 and therefore adapted to enter directly within the slot between the edges of the slot. In the form shown in FIGS. 1 through 4 of the drawing the inner slide piece 17 bears a projection or pin 22 which as shown in FIG. 2 is adapted to pierce the wall of a cylindrical filtering cartridge D. After the slide has been attached by such projection 22 to the cartridge D as shown at the right end in FIG. 2, that entire assembly can be inserted into the tube 10 with the "guide piece 18 entering directly between the walls of the slot 14.

Thereafter the mouth piece is screwed onto the tube 1! The relative position of the parts is shown in FIG. 3. As indicated in FIG. 1, the mouth piece 12 is provided with a conical hollow central boss 24 which is of an outer diameter dimension such that it will move inside the tubu lar casing 26 of the filtering element D and thus aid in making an air-tight joint. It will be noted that as shown in FIG. 3, the slide assembly is at an intermediate position with the separator piece 18 spaced from the inner end of the slot 14. This permits inward motion of the slide assembly to the position shown in FIG. 4 during which motion the filtering element D is moved inwardly to eject a cigarette butt C. The slide assembly is then moved back to the position shown in FIG. 3 to permit a new cigarette to be inserted in the inner end portion of the tube.

After smoking a certain number of cigarettes, the mouth piece 12 may be unscrewed, the slide assembly may be moved rearwardly out of the tube 10 and the pin 22 operates to move the uesd filter element D out of the tube 10 with the slide assembly. The filtering element D may then be replaced and the parts assembled again with a new filtering element.

The filtering element D is made preferably of some suitable filtering material enclosed in a casing 26 which is sufficiently rigid and waterproof so that the casing will not tear when the projection 22 is moved forwardly or rearwardly of the tube 10 with the slide assembly. In order that the filtering element D be assembled in proper longitudinal relation with respect to the slide assembly, filtering elements D designed for use with this holder may have a printed indicia in the form of a dot or'a circumferential line indicating where the pin 22 should. be inseited into the filtering element D.

Usually a normal cigarette which has only a paper casing does not otter sufiicient toughness to insure that the paper casing particularly when moist will not be slit by the projection 22. Therefore, instead of providing the slide assembly with a short inner piece 17, the inner piece 17 may in effect be extended to substantially the length of a cigarette as shown in FIG. 7 and be provided with

28 and 30 respectively so that the modified inner piece 17a can encompass a regular length cigarette to be used as the filter. In this case the flange 30 will act as the ejector of a smoke cigarette as well as to act as an abutment to pull a used filter cigarette out of the tube 10.

FIG. 8 shows a modified form of device wherein the slot 14 of FIG. 1 is omitted and a slit 14a is provided extending rearwardly from the inner end portion of the tube 10a. In this case the slide assembly is inserted from the inner end of the tube to thesmoking position shown in FIG. 8. Because of the relative dimension of the element 17b the slide assembly may be moved inwardly to eject a cigarette through the interposition of the filter element D and after unscrewing the detachable cigarette receiving piece 11a, moved wholly out of the tube 101: For convenience in this case too the mouth piece is removable so that the tube 10a may consist of a hollow tube for cleaning purposes.

What is claimed is: V

1. A cigarette holder comprising a substantially unobstructed tube for the internal reception of a filtering at least one of said pieces being detachable from said tube, the tube having a slot in the wall thereof extending from the end thereof adjacent the detachable one of said pieces, a slide inserted in said slot having an outer manually engageable portion and an inner transversely arcuately shaped inner portion having radially extending filter engaging means projecting therefrom for engaging a filter element in said tube, said slide being movable along said slot to eject a smoked cigarette and, upon detachment of said piece, to withdraw said slide away from said tube and remove with said slide a used filter element.

2. A cigarette holder comprising a substantially unobstructed tube for the internal reception of a filtering element, a month piece at one end of said tube and a cigarette receiving piece at the other end of said tube, at least one of said pieces being detachable from said tube, the tube having a slot in the wall thereof extending from the end thereof adjacent the detachable one of said pieces, a slide inserted in said slot having an outer manually engageable portion and an inner transversely arcuately shaped inner portion, said inner portion having a pin secured thereto extending radially inwardly into and beyond the longitudinal axis of said tube for engaging a filter element, said slide being movable along said slot to eject a smoked cigarette and, upon detachment of said piece, to withdraw said slide away from said tube and remove with said slide a used filter element.

A cigarette holder comprising a substantially unobstructed tube for the internal reception of a filtering element, a mouth piece at one end of said tube and a cigarette receiving piece at the other end of said tube, at least one of said pieces being detachable from said tube, the tube having a slot in the wall thereof extending from the end thereof adjacent the detachable one of said pieces, a slide inserted in said slot having an outer manually engageable portion and an inner transversely arcuately shaped inner portion, said inner portion having flanges extending radially inwardly into said tube and positioned adjacent the opposite ends thereof and being spaced apart a sufficient distance to accommodate a filtering element therebetween, said slide being movable along said slot to eject a smoked cigarette and, upon detachment of said piece, to withdraw said slide away from said tube and remove with said slide a used filter element.
