A. F. BANKS Feb. 20, 1962 DOLL Filed July 25, 1960 AGNES BANKS INVENTOR ATTORNEYS itd This invention relates to dolls, and more particularly to dolls whose facial expressions are changed by the movement of the arms.

An object of this invention is to provide a doll with a mechanism that will enable it to smile when the arms are raised.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a doll with a simple mechanism that is positive in its operation and can be manufactured at a low cost.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and intent of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing:

FIGURE 1 is a front view of the head of a doll.

FIG. 2 is a front view of the head of the same doll as shown in FIG. 1, with the face smiling.

FIG. 3 is a front view of the doll minus its feet, showing the mechanism for changing the facial expression, in dashed lines.

FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of FIG. 3 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.

Having reference now to the drawing in detail, and in particular to FIGS. 3 and 4, there is generally indicated by the reference character 7 a doll having a hollow head 8 and a hollow body 9 in which is secured a tube 1i) in the upper portion thereof, the tube having an inverted U-shaped member 11 secured at its lower end and extending downwardly into the legs of the doll (not shown). This member 11 provides a support for the operating mechan sm within the doll. A second inverted U-shaped member 12 is mounted adjacent to the upper end of the tube 10, there being two elongated openings 13, which are diametrically opposite to each other in the upper end of the tube in order not only to facilitate the assembly of this part of the mechanism, but also to provide a location for the aforesaid inverted U-shaped member 12, the arms 14 of which fit into the hollow arms 15 of the doll as clearly shown in FIG. 3 of the drawing, to move therewith. A pair of vertical levers 16, arranged in parallel spaced relation with respect to each other, are hingedly secured at their lower answer Patented Pele. 20, 19fi2 ends to the horizontal portion 17 of the inverted U-shaped member 12, by means of the hooks 12' formed at the lower ends of said levers, said hooks extending through eyes 14' formed on the bight of the U-shaped member 12, the opposite ends 19 of said levers being secured to the inner surface of the cheeks of the face 18 of the doll, at 2.0, the face of the doll being constructed preferably of rubber or other flexible plastic material, with the result that rotary movement of said member 12 incident to the pivotal movement of said arms will result in movement of the face 18 of the doll, simulating a smile incident to an infant laughing.

From the foregoing description of the construction of this doll, it is obvious that by moving the arms 15 upward as shown by the dashed lines desi nated by the numeral 14, that the levers 16 will be moved rearwardly to a position, also indicated by dashed lines, resulting in an inward movement of the cheek portions of the face 18, simulating a smiling expression on the face of an infant.

From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a smiling doll which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.

As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it will be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is:

In a doll a hollow body including vertically swinging arms, a neck and hollow head forming a part of said body, said head having a flexible face section, a vertical tube mounted within said body, the upper end of said tube being secured within said neck, said tube having elongated openings extending inwardly from the upper end thereof, an inverted U-shaped member extending into said arms, to move therewith, the bight of said inverted U-shaped member being mounted within said elongated openings, eye members extending upwardly from the bight of said U-shaped member, levers having one of their respective ends secured to the inner face of' said flexible face section, hooks on the other ends of said levers hooked into said eye members, pivotally connecting said levers to said inverted U-shaped member, whereby upon swinging movement of said arms, said levers are operated, moving the face section, changing the normal facial expressions of said flexible face section of the head.
