Unite Stres Patent O 3,019,939 BRUSH SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FR PAINT PAILS Wilburt J. Brown, 890 Highland'Ave., Medford, Mass. Filed May 16, 1958, Ser. No. 735,824 1 Claim. (Cl. 2213-90) The present invention relatesV to brush supporting attachments for paint pails.
The problems with which the present invention are concerned may be readily appreciated by noting that in the painting of a wall, for example, there is not only the necessity of laying down the brush from time to time, as when the ladder is moved, but also it often is the practice to have a smaller brush ready for use in Corners or other places inaccessible to the larger brush.
In order to maintain the brushes in their best condition for use and to av'oid getting paint on surfaces where it is not wanted, their vsupport over the paint pail is indicated and the principal objective of the present inven- `tion is to provide satisfactory means for efiecting such support. In accordance with the invention, this objective is attained byproviding a pail spanning attachment having at each end a clip for engaging the rim of the paint pail and preferably including first and second relatively wide and fiat members interconnected to telescope to the size required for the paint pail being used. In addition, one' of the members has a bend defining a ridge like partition for holding the smaller brush against unwanted movement. t
In the accompanying drawings, there 'is shown an` illustrative embodiment oftthe invention from which these and other of its objects,'nove1 features, and advantages Will be readily apparent.` In the drawings,
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the attachment secured to a paint pail,
FIG. 2 is a partly sectioned side of the pail and the attachment, i
FIG. 3 is a view on the Scale of FIG. 4, taken approximately along the indicated lines 3-3 of FIG. 4, and
FIG. 4 is a view of the under surface of the attachment.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the attachment consists of first and second members 5 and 6, respectively. The members 5 and 6 are shown as of relatively. wide fiat stock havingportions 7 and 8, respectively, of U-shaped section so dimensioned that the portion 7 is a slidable fit within the' portion 8. The portion 7 has a longitudinal slot 9`through which extends the clamping screw 10 which is threaded into the porton 8 as at 11. When lthe screw 10 is loosened, the members 5 and 6 may be telescoped to i shorten or extend the attachment as required by the size of the paint pail 12 which it is to fit.
At their free ends, the members 5 and 6 have bends defining resilient clips 13 for engagement with the rim hce In practice, the member 5 isvprovided with an vintermediate bend 16 which, with the.1proximate clip 13, serves to hold the s'maller brush 17 close to the edge of the pail while the brush 18 is sufficiently larger so that its position on the attachment does not have tobe so limited.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that attachments in accordance with the invention are well adapted to meet the requirements of use since they effect a proper support of paint brushes over the paint pail when they are not in use and provide conveniently accessible wiping edges therefor over the paint.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A brush supporting and Wiping attachment for paint pails, said attachment comprising first and second members of fiat elongated strips of sheet material, said first member having a portion thereof in face to face Voverlappng relation with a portion of said second member and with the longitudinal aXes of said members in paral- 1el relationship, said overlapping portions of said'members having downturned 'flanges on their side edges whereby said portions are of U-shaped cross-section throughout their lengths, one of said overlapping portions being slidable within the other, the lower of said portions having a Iongitudinal slot, and a looking screw extending upwardly through said slot and into the upper of said portions thereby to enable the length of said attachment to be adjusted, the end of each member remote from the overlapping portion of said member being provided with a U-shaped bend disposed with its closed end extending upwardly to receive the rim of the pail within it, and one of said members'including a transverse, upwardly disposed bend between its rim-receiving bend and the proximate ends of its downturned' margins and spaced from said rim-receiving bend to establish therewith a retaining seat for brushes which are too short to be supported by the central zone of said attachment, and the rim of the paint pail.
