LIPTING JAGK. No. 301,930. Patented July 15, 1884.

UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
MARTIN SMITH, OF WAYNESBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,930, dated July 15, 1884.
Application filed April 3, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IVIARTIN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesburg, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Lifting-Jack for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lifting-jacks, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in .its construction, and effective and durable in its use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lifting-jack which shall be capable of lifting a heavy load with but a slight expenditure of power, and one that may be folded tooceupy a minimum amount of space.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
- In the drawings, Figure -1 is a side elevation of alifting-jack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the jack closed or folded.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, Arepresentsthe lifting-lever, which is provided with a series of openings or perforations, as shown, in any one of which is pivoted an arm, D, by means of a removable pin, said arm D being provided at its lower end with an elongatedslot or open- B represents an arm, which is pivoted to the outer end of the liftinglever A. This arm B the lever A and arm 0. The lower end of the arm 0 has an outwardly-projecting headed pin, b, which works in the slot 0 in the arm D. Thus a limited movement is allowed.-
It will be seen from the above description that my improved jack is simple, may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and that it may be folded to occupy a minimum amount of room.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with the lever A, of the supporting-arms B O, pivoted to the outer end thereof, and an arm, D, pivoted to the lever A and arm 0, substan tially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the lever A, of the supporting-arms B O, pivoted to the outer end thereof, and an arm, D, pivoted in any one of a series of openings on the lever A at one end, and formed at its lower end with an elongated slot, in which works a-headed pin projecting from the arm 0, substantially as set forth.
MARTIN SMITH.
