(Cl. 22B-91) This invention relates to a combination coa-t and trouser hanger, and more particularly, a unitary combination coat and trouser hanger adapted for permanent mounting on a wall.

There has long been a need for a combination coat and -trouser hanger which would be suitable for use in motels, hotels, and the like, in that the combination should somehow be permanently attached to the premises. Such a device would necessarily have to be of simple yet sturdy construction.

ln view of the above it is an object of this invention to provide a combination coat and trouser hanger wherein the unit may be attached to the premises by permanently securing the unit to a wall or door in the area where it is to be used.

it is another object to provide a unit such as the above which is of sturdy construction and requires very little maintenance.

It is a still further object to provide a unit such as the above wherein the trousers are held by a wedging action.

The above `and other objects and advantages will become apparent in View of the following detailed description and drawing, showing by way of example, a preferretl embodiment of this invention and wherein:

FIGURE l is a side elevational view of the unit of this invention mounted on a vertical wall with the wedging gripper in the upper position;

FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view like FIGURE 1 except that the manner in which trousers are gripped is shown;

FIGURE 3 is a front elevational View showing a coat, in phantom, carried on the hanger portion of the unit, and;

FIGURE 4 is a top plan view of the unit as attached to a wall.

The combination coat and trouser hanger 1t) as illustrated in FlGURES 1 4 comprises a mounting plate 12 having longitudinal channels 14 formed in the faces 16 which will be adjacent the wall i8 when the unit is secured thereto. The front face 2@ ofthe mounting plate l2 has a centrally disposed longitudinal groove 22 therein.

A wedging gripper 24 yhaving a centrally positioned slot 26 generally conforming in size to the horizontal cross section of the mounting plate is slidably mounted on said plate and held thereon by means of tongues 2S, 23 extending inwardly from the opposite faces Ell of slot 26 and fitting into channels i4 in the mounting plate. It is these tongues 23 which slidably carry the wedging gripper 24 in the mounting plate channels h4.

A spring biased plunger assembly 32 is mounted on the top surface of the wedging gripper 24. This assembly has a. plunger 34 which faces and is biased toward the wall so that it may frictionally engage the front face 2li of the mounting plate and slide in groove 22 therein. The spring which forces the plunger 34 into friotional engagement with the front face of the mounting plate creates a force suflicient to insure that the plunger will hold the wedging gripper 24 in vertical position on the mounting plate.

The wedging gripper 24 has a front face 36 which is tapered, sloping downwardly land inwardly. The tapered face 35 has a centrally positioned vertical groove 38 therein. A spacer 4t] is secured to the lower end portion of the exposed vertical `face 20 of the mounting plate 12. A holder bracket 42 is fastened to the spacer so that the bracket will extend upwardly therefrom in spaced relation 4to the mounting plate front face 20. 'Ihe upper edge portion 44 of the bracket 4Z is generally horizontal and cooperates with the tapered face 36 ofthe wedging gripper 24 to hold the cuff end of a pair of trousers therebetween.

A coat hanger 46 is ailxed to the spacer 40 and extends downwardly in spaced relation to the wall 18 to which the unit :lil is attached. A central brace .and support 48 is secured to the outward faces of the holder bracket 42 and the coat hanger 46. A hole S0 is formed in the lower portion of the brace 43 and the coat hanger 46 to receive neckties and similar items.

As best illustrated in FIGURES 1, 2, and 4 the coat and trouser unit is secured to wall 18 by means of screws 52. With the unit assembled on the wall 1S with the wedfging gripper 24 in the up position, the yculf ends of a pair of trousers are folded over the holder bracket top edge portion 44 and the wedging gripper brought down so that its tapered face 36 will engage the trousers and grip them by forcing them into tight engagement with the Itop edge 44 of the holder bracket 42 as illustrated in FGURE 2 wherein the trousers are shown in phantom. The coat is placed over the coat hanger, as illustrated in phantom in FG'URE 3. rl"his combination is equally adapted `for use in connection with womens suits wherein the skirt is held by the wedging gripper and the coat by the coat hanger.

This unitary combination coat and trouser hanger can very conveniently be made of wood, however, it may also be made of metal or plastic. The unit is of simple and sturdy construction and even when subjected to abuse will still perform its intended functions perfectly.

What I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

l. A trouser hanger adapted for permanent mounting on a wall, said hanger comprising a mounting plate adapted to be secured to a wall, a wedging gripper slidably carried on the mounting plate for up and down movement, a holder bracket held in spaced relation to the bottom portion of the mounting plate, said holder bracket having a top portion adapted to be engaged by the wedging gripper to retain the cuil' end of a pair of trousers therebetween.

2. A combination coat and trouser hanger adapted for permanent mounting on a wall, said combination cornprising a mounting plate adapted to be secured to a wall, a wedginig gripper slidably carried on the mounting plate for up and down movement thereon, means on the wedging gripper to engage the mounting plate so as to retain the gripper in any vertical position on said plate, a holder racket held in spaced relation to the bottom portion of the mounting plate, said bracket having a top portion adapted to be engaged by the wedging gripper to retain the cuff end of a pair of trousers therebetween, and a coat hanger held in spaced relation to the mounting plate beneath the holder bracket.

3. The invention as described in claim 2 and wherein the wedging gripper is slidably carried on the mounting plate by a tongue and groove arrangement in which one of the cooperating members has the tongues and the other has the grooves in which the tongues ride.

'4. Fl`he invention as described in claim 3 and wherein the face of the wedging gripper which engages the top portion of the holder bracket is tapered downwardly and inwardly.

5. A combination coat and trouser hanger particularly adapted for permanent mounting on a wall, said combination comprising a mounting plate adapted to be secured to a wall, said mounting plate being rectangular in cross-section and having longitudinal channels in the two enit/,05a

faces adjacent the wall and a centrally disposed longitudinal groove in the other exposed face, a wedging gripper having a centrally extending slot into which the mounting plate tits, a tongue member extending inwardly from each opposite face of said slot, the tongue members riding in the channels in the mounting plate to slidably carry the wedging gripper on the plate, a spring biased plunger assembly mounted on the top face of the wedging gripper, said assembly having `a plunger fitting into the groove in the mounting plate to rictonally engage the plate thereby retaining the wedging gripper in position, the outer face of the wedging gripper sloping downwardly and inwardly and having a centrally disposed vertical groove therein, a spacer secured to the lower portion of the mounting plate, a holder bracket secured to land extending upwardly from the spacer in spaced and parallel relation to the mounting plate, said holder bracket having an upper horizontal edge portion whereby the cuff end of a pair of trousers may be folded thereover the wedging gripper slid downwardly to engage the trousers and hold same between the face of the wedging gripper and the holder bracket, and a coat hanger secured to `and extending downwardly from the spacer in spaced relation to the wall supporting the mounting plate,
