Specification of Letters Patent No. 30, 164, dated September 25, 1860.

Be it known that I, KIRBY SPENCER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Arrangement of Devices for Refrigerators for the Preservation of Edibles and Fluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in placing a preservatory, having one or more tight, dark, dry ventilating apartments, within a refrigerating chamber, and the edibles and fluids to be preserved to be placed in the apartments of the said preservatory.

Figures 1, 2 and 3, are perspective views. Fig. 4: is a sectional view of the end of the refrigerator.

The method of constructing my invention is as follows: A casement, B, Fig. 2, is formed, having a bottom A, ends B, C, back D, and a front E, F, with an aperture G, H, in said front. The superior surface of the bottom A, is inclined to the point I, and shown at A, Fig. L. Sills a, Fig. 2, of the thickness of the inferior portion of the front E, F, are fastened to the superior surface of the bottom A. Spaces 6, Fig. 2, and Z), Fig. t, between the surface of the bottom and the sills, are formed by cutting away a portion of the sills, at the points Z), I). An aperture 1, in the end is cut, and a pipe or faucet J is attached to said aperture. A top, consisting of two parts, 0, and (Z, is applied to the casement B. The top 0, is a movable cover or lid.

A preservatory C, being of less length, height and width than the casement B, is formed by having a bottom A, a back D, with ends B, C, a top 6, and a front E F, with one or more apartments f, and are formed by partitions 2, 2. Ventilating apertures, g, are cut in, and near the front edge of the top of the preservatory and are closed by sliding covers, j. Apertures h, are cut in the apartments f, having faucets attached. Shelves 2', are formed in the apartments f, the front edges of which lie in a vertical line drawn from the posterior edges of the apertures g. Doors 76, are formed in the front E, F, of the preservatory. A portion a of the inferior edge of the superior side of the aperture H, G, is cut away of a length less than the preservatory C.

The preservatory C, is placed in the casement B, its front E, F, lying in and filling the aperture H, I G. An aperture, 0, is formed by the top 0, of the preservatory, O, and the section of the superior edge of the front E, F, in the said aperture, the covers j, traverse. A ventilating flue K, is formed of the length of the preservatory C, by the top (Z, the top 6, the front E, F, and a strip P of the height, of the width of the superior portion la, 7a, of the front E, F, and of a length of the preservatory C is applied to the inferior posterior edges of the top (Z, which is of a width of a line drawn from the posterior edges of the apertures g, to the front E, F. The ends of the flue are closed by strips fastened to the strip P, and the top (Z. An open pipe, at its ends, L, having a ventilating aperture 2), is attached to the top (Z, over an aperture, cut through the said top (Z, at the point 0.

A frigerific chamber 00, is formed by the walls of the preservatory C, and the walls of the casement B. The casement B, and the preservatory C, may be made of any suitable substance. Articles, to be preserved, are placed in the apartments f. The apertures h, open to the frigerific chamber 00, and may be closed. The ventilation of the apartments is effected by the apertures g, the flue K, and the pipe L. F rigerific substances are contained in the frigerific chamber 00, and water, or other substances, may be drawn at the aperture 1.
