No. 843,182 8 Claims. (Cl. 68-198) This invention relates to a perforated tube for the wet treatment, more particularly dyeing, of yarns and filaments. It has recently become the preferred practice to produce such tubes by the extrusion of a suitable plastic which is resistant to boiling, non-staining, and dye-repellent. The tubes are used primarly for cross winding cheeses.
The principal feature of the tube proposed by the present invention is the provision on its outside peripheral surface in radial planes of short slightly projecting transverse rib-like elevations. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the said transverse rib-like elevations rise out of the general conformation of the external tube surface in the form of ridges with sloping flanks and a central culmination, merging at each end gradually into the general tube surface.
The presence of these short rib-like elevations on the peripheral surface of the proposed tube ensures that the yarn will Wind smoothly and faultlessly on to and off the tube, especially in so far as the inner convolutions thereof are concerned, and that the resultant package will be securely held on the tube.
An illustrative embodiment of a tube contrived in the manner proposed by the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the tube,
FIG. 2 is an axial section thereof,
FIG. 3 is a cross section of the tube, taken on the line IIIIII in FIG. 1,
FIG. 4 is a magnified fragmentary reproduction of portion P of the cross section of the tube shown in FIG. 3, and
FIG. 5 is a corresponding magnified fragmentary reproduction of portion P of the axial section of the tube shown in FIG. 2.
The illustrated tube a is cone-shaped and hollow. The walls of the tube are pierced with a plurality of holes b arranged in relatively staggered rows. The holes conically widen from the inside outwards. The peripheral surface of the tube a is provided with short transverse ribs having upper and lower sides 0, the ribs located either between adjacent holes b or to the side thereof, and likewise arranged in rows in relatively staggered disposition. Each rib rises from each end to a central culmination and forms a kind of ridge or arcuate edge d with sloping flanks. The crest of the ridge is preferably slightly rounded.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A tube for cross winding yarns and filaments thereon for Wet treatment thereof comprising a tube body open at both ends, a plurality of spaced ribs projecting from the outer surface of said tube body, each said rib being substantially triangular in cross-section in a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of said tube body and being substantially outwardly bowed, crescent shaped in cross-section in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said tube body, and holes in the surface of the tube body.
2. The tube according to claim 1, wherein the ribs are formed in a plurality of rows extending from one end of the tube body to the other, longitudinally of said tube body and wherein the ribs of adjacent rows are staggered.
3. The tube according to claim 2, wherein the longitudinal extent of each rib along the surface of the tube body is small relative to the longitudinal spacing between adjacent ribs of adjacent rows.
4. The tube according to claim 3, wherein the holes are positioned in said tube body between adjacent ribs in the same row and adjacent ribs in alternate rows.
5. The tube according to claim 3, wherein the holes are in staggered rows.
6. The tube according to claim 5, wherein the apex of each triangular rib is rounded.
7. A tube for cross winding yarns and filaments thereon for wet treatment thereof comprising a tube body open at both ends, a plurality of spaced ribs projecting from the outer surface of said tube body, each of said ribs having upper and lower sides converging outwardly to form an arcuate edge which intersects the surface of said tube, said edge extending transversely to the axis of said tube body.
8. The tube of claim 1, wherein the ribs are in staggered rows, and said sides are flat.
