(61. 131-235) The invention disclosed and claimed in this application relates to smokers articles and more particularly to ashtrays having in combination therewith, means for extinguishing cigarettes placed therein. My invention is an improvement over similar devices in which there is provided an ashtray having means associated therewith by which cigarettes and the like are snufied.

One object of my invention is the provision of an improved ashtray and cigarette extinguisher combination.

A further object of my invention is the provision in such an improved combination of means for disassembling the parts of the cigarette extinguisher so that all portions of the device may be easily cleaned.

A further object of my invention is the provision of an ashtray and cigarette extinguisher which is made in two parts which may be easily and cheaply combined for the formation of an eflicient combination ashtray and extinguisher.

Further objects and features of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and claim when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein my invention is illustrated.

FIG. 5 is a view in side elevation of the removable insert for the extinguisher shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 inclusive; and

Referring still to the drawings for a more detailed description of the embodiments of my invention illustrated herein, it may be seen that I have shown in FIG. 1 an ashtray 11 having a front 12,,

The partition 17 is formed with a slit 18 and secured to one side of the slit 18 is the main portion 19 of a cigaette extinguisher now to be more fully described. The portion 19 is secured to the partition 17 adjacent to the slit 18 as at the points 21 and 22 (see FIG. 3), in any suitable manner such as, for example, welding, brazing, etc. Portions of the partition 17 adjacent to the slit 18 are outwardly turned away from the element 19 as at 25 and 24 so that there is formed between the element 19 and the turned portions or lips 23 and 24 a socket into which the removable element 25 is nested. The removable element 25 is shown more clearly in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, and as shown there as well as in FIGS. 1 and 2, is provided with the extending tab 26. The

Operation The purpose of the extinguisher is obviously to extinguish cigarettes. 19 and 25. After a period of approximately 7 seconds, the cigarette will be extinguished and then can be deposited in the disposal section of the ashtray without danger of smoldering. The removable portion 25 of the extinguisher portion of the extinguisher can be removed by lifting upward on the tab 26 and this portion 25 may be used to clean the fixed portion 19 of any ashes which may have failed to drop from the trough to the extinguisher. Each portion of the extinguisher is similar to the other portion in the respect that when joined together they become an open ended hollow frustum of a cone open at both ends with the larger opening at the upper end in which the cigarette may be placed.

It should be noted that the fixed portion 19 of the size of the whole extinguisher. It may be larger or it may be smaller than the removable portion. If space does not permit a large indentation in the partition 17, the indented portion may be smaller in depth and the removable portion may in such case be made larger so as to form a complete frustum of a cone when joined together. The advantages of having the extinguisher in two sections rather than forming it as one complete part is that one section may be removed so as to provide easy access to the other section and to permit cleaning. Also the fixed portion which is similar to an indentation in the side of part of any ashtray, can be constructed during the usual process of making the ashtray by just indenting or stamping a portion of the tray in order to complement the other half of the extinguisher in such a manner that when joined together by flanges a complete extinguisher is formed.

It is to be understood that the above described embodiments of my invention are for the purpose of illustration only and various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

A cigarette receiver and extinguisher comprising a tray having a bottom, side walls, and a front wall and having a partition formed with a slit and with integral retaining lips bent outwardly adjacent to said slit; and a cigarette extinguisher comprising parts attached to and cooperating with said partition to form a frusto conical shaped funnel consisting of a basic stationary-half frusto conical shaped funnel portion welded to said partition adjacent said lips so as to cover one side of said slit and to form with said outwardly bent lips apair of slots and of a sliding movable half frusto conical shaped funnel portion complementary to said basic portion positioned slidably in said slots and secured in complementary position relative to said basic portion by said outwardly bent lips.
