No. 557,921 4 Claims. (Cl. 229-55) This invention relates to bag constructions, and more specifically concerns bags which may be formed of transparent, flexible materials.
An object of this invention is to provide improved bag constructions having stidening inserts for imparting shape to the bag or for supporting the contents thereof, such inserts additionally providing means extending externally of the bag for suspending the bag from a support.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved bag construction having a stifening insert within the bag and including a portion projecting through an opening in the bag to provide means for suspending the bag from a support or for handling the bag, and further including a portion for shaping the bag in its third dimension.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved bag construction and a stiering insert therefor; the insert having a portion projecting through an opening in the bag, the bag and insert having interengageable portions for retaining the bag and insert in engaged relation, yet allowing the insert to be removed from the bag.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved bag construction having a self-sealing liap construction; such ap construction lending itself to operative relationship to Stilening inserts which may be dis posed within the bag.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 or' FIG. l;
FlG. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of FIG. l;
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional View similar to that of FIG. 2 and showing a modiiied form of stiffening insert;
FlG. 5 is a front elevational View of a bag construction embodying the invention and illustrating a modification thereof;
FIG. 6 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of FIG. 5; and
FlG. 7 is a transverse sectional view similar to that of FiG. 6 and showing a modified form of stilening insert. v
Referring in detail to the drawing, and particularly to FIGS. 1-3, 10 designates a bag construction embodying the invention. The same comprises rectangular shaped front and back walls 11, 12 of flexible sheet material such as polyethylene, cellophane, or the like., which are secured together at their side edges 13. The walls 11, 12 are further secured adjacent their top edges, as at 14, 15, along lines extending inwardly from side edges 13; the inner ends of said linesterminating at opposed, spaced points i6, 17, to leave an opening 18 defined by the unsecured wall portions between points 16, 17.
The bag walls 1,1, 12 are preferably formed of limp transparent material, and which does not readily maintain its own shape. The bag 1i) may be used for packaging a variety of merchantable items which may be viewed by the purchaser while still within the bag.
Means is provided for imparting shape to the bag for supporting the contents thereof; for carrying indicia thereon visible through the walls of the bag; and for suspending the bag and its contents from a suitable support so as to present the same for inspection by customers.
Accordingly, a at insert sheet 19 of stiff material such as cardboard or the like, is inserted within the interior of bag 1li. Such insert 19 is of an outline similar to that of the bag, with the sheet edges adjacent the edges of the bag. The insert 19 includes a tongue portion 20 extending from a central portion of top edge 21 thereof, said tongue portion 26 projecting through opening 18 in bag 16. An opening 22 in tongue 2G allows the same to receive a rod, not shown, or other suitable supporting means, whereby the bag 10 and its contents are suspended therefrom. v Y
The contents of bag 1t), not shown, may be mounted on insert 19, concealing the same, except for tongue Ztl, as for example a shirt or the like; Alternatively, the bag contents may be suitably mounted on one side of insert 19. In either case, insert 19 will maintain the shape of the bag contents and also shape the bag 10.
The insert 19 together with the bag contents are introduced into bag 1i? through the bottom, open edges thereof, the tongue Ztl projecting through opening 18, and the bottom wall edges may then be suitably sealed together as at 23; or if desired, such bottom edges may be left open.
It will be apparent that the shouldered edge portions 2i of the insert 19, or the bag contents overlying such edge portions, will abut the seal lines i4, 15' of bag 10 to retain said insert and b-ag contents within the bag. The tongue portion 2li of the insert 19 provides means for handling the bag 19, as well as suspending the saine in a vertical position from a suitable support.
As shown in FIG. 4, the insert 19 may be of extended length and provided with parallel fold lines 24, 25 adjacent the lower end thereof, to form a narrow, thickness ilap 26 and an end ilap 27. Such ilaps 26, 27 are adapted to be located adjacent the bottom edge of bag lil, with flap 26 imparting a given thickness to the bag. The ap 26 may be imprinted as desired to give information as to sizes and the like, in which case, bags lilmay be disposed flatwise on shelves with the bottom edges thereof exposed to view. Other portions of insert 19 may also be imprinted as desired, the indicia so imprinted being visible throuf'h the transparent walls 11, or 12..
The invention herein may be further embodied in the form shown in FIGS. 5, 6. Thus, bag 3d has a front wall 31, a back wall 32. sealed thereto at the side edges 33 and bottom edges 33a. The top edge 34 of back wall 32 projects above the top edge 35 of front wall 31. A ap 36 extends from edge 34 of wall 32, being folded downwardly towards the front face of wall 32, the free edge 37 of said ap being located below the edge 3-5 of front wall 31. The opposite ends of flap 36 are sealed between the side edges 33 of the walls 31, 32, thus forming a pocket between said ap and back wall 32.
The bag 36 may be used in conjunction with a at stiiening insert 3S of cardboard or the like. Such insert is formed with a tongue 39 extending upwardly from a central portion of top edge 40 of the insert. Recesses 41 are formed on either side of tongue 39, providing laterally disposed projections 42. The insert 3S may be of an outline similar to that of bag 30 and is adapted to be associated with the contents of the bag, not shown, in a manner previously described.
The insert 33, together with the bag contents mounted thereon, is disposed within bag 30 by inserting the same through the opening between wall 31 and flap 36. The insert 38 is moved downwardly so that bottom edge 43 thereof approaches bottom edge 33a of the bag and bringing the top edge 40 of the insert below the edge 37 of flap 36. The insert 38 is then moved upwardly while deilecting projections 42 inwardly to receive the same between ap 36 and back wall 3,2. Tongue 39 will project above edge 34 of the bag to provide means for handling the bag and to suspend the same, in the manner previously described.
As shown in FIG. 7, bag 30, similar to that shown in FIGS. 5, 6, is provided with a at, stiffening insert 45 of cardboard or the like, and similar to insert 19 shown in FIG. 4, except that ap 27a, corresponding to flap 27, is extended so that the upper edge 46 thereof is receivable in the pocket formed between ap 36 and back wall 32 of bag 30, to retain the insert within said bag.
Bag 30 may be used without inserts 38 or 45, the same Ibeing self sealing in use. Thus, the bag contents, not
. shown, in flat sheetlike form, may be inserted through the opening between ap 36 and front wall 31, moved downwardly toward bottom edge 33a,rand the upper portion of the sheetlike contents is tucked into the pocket formed by vap 36 and back wall 32. Such bag contents will then press the ap 36 outwardly into contact with front wall 31 to form an effective seal for the bag, the seal being enhanced by stretching the side edges 33 of the bag 30 at the upper portions thereof, away Vfrom each other.
It is understood that the dimensions of the inserts v 38, 45 are such as to allow for successive downward and upward movement lwithin bags 30, taking into account the bag contents associated therewith, so as to properly engage the inserts with the retaining portions of the bag.
As various changes might be made in the embodiments of the invention herein shown, without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matter shown or described shall be deemed illustrative and not by way of limitation except as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed our invention, we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
