Description

(No Model.)
T J. O; LOUOKS.
HOT AND COLD WATER FAUGET.
No. 301,061. Patented Ju e 24., 1884.
INVENTOR /dwlibjs M%i 2M ATTORNEY Unrrnn dra'rns JAMES C. LOUGKS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWIN S. PIERCE, OF SAME PLACE.
HOT AND COLD WATER FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,061, dated June 2%, 1884.
Application filed June 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. LOUOKS, a citizen of the United States, and residing-in the city of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hot and Gold WVater Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section on the line a:, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout-the figures.
My invention relates to a compound faucet for hot and cold water or hard and soft water; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The letter A represents the handle, mounted on top of the rod B. The handle A is provided with the pointer or indicator 0. The shoulder L of the casing L is marked on its outer surface, Hot, Gold, &c.- \Vhen the pointer O is turned to Hot, the hot water will flow; when turned to Cold, the cold water will flow. Said pointer may also be moved so as to indicate and admit both hot and cold water, as shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, tepid water may be drawn by mingling the hot and cold, all of which will be more fully hereinafter specified B is a rod within the casing L, which passes up through the cap The handle A is secured to the top of said rod. The indicator 0 and rod B turn with the handle A.
D is a spout.
E is a plug on the lower inner side of the bottom casing, G.
F is a chamber in the plug E.
F is an opening in the top part of the plug E, and F is an opening in the lower side of said plug. The openings F F communicate with the plug-chamber F. The rod B is at tached to the top of plug E by means of the pm b. I
f is a threaded projection on the lower end of the plug E. E is a-shoulder on said plug for the reception of washer d.
b is a nut on thethreaded end f of the plug. The chamber or inner side of the casing G tapers from the top downward. The plug E also tapers, so as to fit snugly and'turn freely in said chamber. The chambers L G are made in separate parts, whereby the plug E maybe removed when desired. By the tapering of these parts the plug E is secured within said chamber.
G is a transverse pipe having threaded inner ends, Q Q.
H is a diaphragm in the center of pipe G, whereby compartments J K are formed. There are two openings, 6 e, which pass through the casing G and pipe H, and establish communications between the chamber F and compartments J K when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2. The openings 0 6 communicate with the opening F in the plug E. The'diaphragm H extends inward to a point flush with the outer surface of the plug E. The chambers L and G are united by the threaded ends P. l
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Suppose the pipe connecting at K contains steam, and the pipe connecting at J cold water, (under a sufficient pressure to cause it to flow up through the standard.) By turning the handle A so as to bring the port 6 upon the side J opposite to the opening F cold water is admitted into the chamber F out the opening F, up through the inside of the chamber L, and thence out of the spout D. If warm water is desired, turn the handle so as to bring the opening F opposite to both ports, as shown in Fig. 2, when the steam, also being admitted, will mingle with the cold water and heat it sufficiently in its upward passage. If tepid water only is desired, less steam may be admitted by only partly opening the port, as described. This same device may also be applied to two pipes-one carrying hot and the other cold water also to hard and soft water. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The casing L, having spout D, and the casing G, in combination with the plug'E, having openings F F and chamber F, the rod 13, and the pipe G, having diaphragm H and port-openings c e, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The casing L, having spout D, and the casing G, in combination with the plug E, hav ing openings F F and chamber F, pipe G, having diaphragm H and openings '0 e, and
the rod B, having handle A and indicator 0, her G,having tapering chambers therein, and substantially as described, and for the purpipe G, having diaphragm H and openings 6 e, poses set forth. in combination with the tapering plug E, hav- 3. The casings L and G, the casing L having ing openings F F and chamber F, the rod B, I5 5 a spout, the casing G tapering from the top handle A, and indicator 0, substantially as downward, in combination with the tapering described, and for the purposes set forth.
plug E, having chamber F and openings F F, the rod 13, handle A, and pipe G, having dia- JAMES LOUOKS' phragm H and ports 6 e, substantially-as de- Witnesses: 1o scribed and set forth. DENNIS L. Roenns, 4. The casing L, having spout D, the cham- J AY. D. NAYSMITH.
