AREA-WINDOW PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,654, dated June 17, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. SMITH, of Pittsbu'rg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Area-Window Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following; is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective showing the application of my invention. modifications. Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of same. Figs. 6. and 7 are transverse sections of modifications. Fig. 8 shows the bottom removable.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-applied protector for area-windows; and it consists in a pecu liarly-formed flanged curb or casting, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Area-windows, as theyareusuallytermed, are located in the foundation-walls of ahouse, and stand either partly or wholly below the levc1 of the pavement or sidewalk. An opening or area is usually made in the sidewalk to give light and access to the window. The bricks of the pavement are sometimes laid directly to the area, and sometimes the edge of the latter is provided with a strip of timber or stone. The efi'ect of the weather upon the wood strip is to rot it, while the stone or brick is soon chipped off or loosened by the common practice of throwing coal into .the cellar at the areas. Iface the area with an iron or steel guard or protector, A, having a flange, 1), as shown. The incurved ends of the protector A rest against the wall of the building, while Figs. 2 and 3 are the horizontal lip or flange b overlaps the sidewalk bricks or blocks, and thus the protector is held securely in position. In some cases the protector A will have a bottom, 0, in which case I give it an outward slope, which drains .water to an outlet, d, and thus keeps the area dry and preserves the windowframing. This bottom 0 may be made integral with the body A; or it may be separate and supported on lugs f, formed in the body A, as in Fig. 8. In some cases, also, I propose to provide the protector Awith a top grating, c. There the window has shutters the protector will have a substantially rectangular form, to allow the shutters to open properly for the admission of light and ventilation. The flange b protects the edge of the area against damage from any source, and cannot itself be displaced on account of the secure bracing it and the body A obtain against the house-wall, and is beveled outwardly to shed water and prevent its accumulation therein.
I claim as my invention- 1. The described area-protector, consisting of the metallic guard or body A, having horizontal flange 1), adapted by its flange to rest upon the sidewalk and by its ends to rest against a housewall, substantially as described.
2. The area-protector consisting of the metallic guard or body A, having flange I) and bottom 0, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH F. SMITH.
