NEEDLE ARRANGEMENT FOR KNITTING MACHINES Filed Dec. 29, 1959 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 3,006,171 NEEDLE ARRANGEMEN'I FR KNITTNG MACHNEES Hans Scheller, Faurndau, Kreis Goppingen, and Wilhelm Ullmann, Eisiingen, Fils, Germany, assgnors to Gebr. Scheller, Eislingen, Fils, Germany Filed Dec. 29, 1959, Ser. No. 862,504 Claims priority, appiication Germany Bec. 29, 195?, 16 Claims. (Cl. 66-88) The present invention relates to a needle arrangement for knitting machines, and more particularly to a knitting machine employing a Coulier Motion and provided with two sets of spring-hook needes for the manufacture of various patterns of full-fashioned knitted fabrics.
Known knitting machines of this type are not suited for directly connecting a ribbed knitted fabric with a knitpurl knitted fabric.
It is one object of the present invention to improve known knitting machines, particularly knitting machines of the Cotton type in such a manner that on the two sets of needles, either a knit-knit fabric, or a knit-purl fabric can be knitted.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a knitting machine in which a knit-purl fabric can be knitted in direct continuation of a knit-knit fabric.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a knitting machine with additional means for operating the spring-hooks of a set of needles.
Another object of the present invention is to provide one set of needles of the machine with projections on the Shanks thereof for the purpose of spreading loops to permit passage of the needles of another set of needles.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a spring-hook needle with an additional spreading projection.
With these objects in view, one embodiment of the present invention comprises a sinker head having a presser edge; a set of movable sinkers mounted on the sinker head above the presser edge; a set of reciprocable rst needles Ilocated below the first presser edge; a higher presser edge ylocated above the sinkers and extending parallel to the rst-mentioned presser edge; and a set of second needles extending transverse to the sinkers and presser edges, and having spring-hooks.
The second needles are preferably movable in a vertical plane between a higher position in which the hooks of every nth needle, preferably every second needle, engages the higher presser edge, and a lower position in which the hooks of the needles engage the lower presser edge.
Since hooks engaged by the presser edges are closed, the hooks of second needles closed by the higher presser edge pass outwardly of the corresponding kinks formed in a thread formed between the sinkers and second needles. Thereby, corresponding horizontal rst needles receive the corresponding thread portions for further operations.
The hooks of the second needle, not engaged by the higher presser edge, remain open to catch the other kinks of the thread and then, closed by the lower presser edge during further downward movement, draw the corresponding thread portions through loops suspended on the rst horizontal needles.
Preferably, the sinker head includes a bottom part having the lower presser edge and a top part having the higher presser edge. The higher presser edge is advantageously provided on a detachable rail.
The higher presser edge has preferably grooves for slidably receiving the spring-hooks which are to be closed. Hooks which are not to be closed, pass cutouts in the higher presser edge, so that they are not operated.
Billl Patented Get. 31, 1.961
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, each first horizontal needle has in addition to a springhook, a projection on the shank thereof which serves for spreading a 'loop on the respective needle during the movement of the needle. In this manner, a corresponding second vertical needle can be moved to a position located below the spread loop so that the respective second vertical needles passes through the spread loop on the respective first needle whereby the loop is transferred from the rst needle to the second needle and further knitting operations will result in knit-purl fabric.
The spreading projections are spaced from the springhooks of the first needles so that the spreading projections do not interfere with the knitting of knit-knit fabric. When it is desired to stop the knitting of the knit-purl part of the fabric, the bar supporting the set of lirst hori- Zontal needles is shifted toward the sinker head so that the spreading projections become operative to spread the loops, and to hold them in spread position above the ends of the vertical second needles which are shifted away from the sinker head into the corresponding position to be able to pass through the spread loops on the rst hoi'izontal needles.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specic embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. l is a fragmentary plan View illustrating a sinker head accord-ing to the present invention cooperating with two sets of needlles;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view illustrating the embodiment of FIG. 1 in a first operational position;
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line III--III in FIG. l and illustrating another operational position;
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line IV-IV in FIG. l and illustrating another operational position;
FIG. 5 is a` cross-sectional view illustrating a preferred embodiment of the sinker head according to the present invention;
FIG. 6 is a side view of a needle in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 7 is a plan v-iew of the needle shown in FIG. 6;
FIG. 8 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View illustrating an operational position of the needle shown in FIGS. 6 and 7;
FIG. 9 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view illustrating another operational position of the needles; and
FIG. l0 is a fragmentary schematic plan view illustrating the spreading of loops by needles illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7.
Referring now to the drawings, 'and more particularly to FIGS. l and 2, a set of sinkers 1 is mounted in a sinker head which includes `a bottom part 2 and -a top part 3. The edge 2a of the bottom part 2 is the presser edge for the set of vertical needles 4 which are provided with spring-hooks cooperating in a known manner with the pres-ser edge 2a. Knock-over bits 7 are located underneath the presser edge 2a of the bottom. part Z of the sinker head.
Another set of horizontal needles 5 is arranged for movement in a horizontal plane below the bot-tom part o-f the sinker head. Needles 5 have spring-hooks cooperating with the botto-m face of the presser edge 2a. The sets of needles 4 and '5 are mounted in bars which are operated by Coulier Motions to perform reciproca-ting movements in time relation to each other, and to the movements of the sinkers l.
ln accordance with the present invention, the edge 3a 3 of the top part 3 of the sinker head, is` constructed as a presser edge, and is parallel to the presser edge 2a. Every second vertical needle 4 cooperates with the upper presser edge, so that in the raised position `of the needles 4, the spring-hook of every second needle 4 is closed as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4.
To permit the passage of the hooks of every other needle 4 past the presser edge 3a without closing of the hooks, the presser edge 3a is formed with cutouts 3b.
While in the illustrated embodiment the hook of every second needle 4 is closed by the presser edge 3a, it will be understood that differently selected needles 4 may be operated by the presser edge 3a, so that broadly speaking every nth needle 4 cooperates with presser edge 3a, where n is an integer greater than one.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 4, the presser edge 3a and the recesses 3b are provided in a fiat ledge of the top part 3 of the sinker head. In the modified construction shown in FIG. 5, an elongated rail or bar 30 is secured to lthe top part 3 by a screw 31 and is provided with a ledge 9 having the presser edge 3a and the cutouts 3b.
In the position illustrated in FIG. 1, the sinkers 1 are advanced, and passing between the needles 4, have formed kinks in a thread 8 so that the same has a zig-Zag shape. When needles 4 are moved from the higher position shown in FIG. 2 to the lower position shown in FIG. 4 and then further down past the presser edge 2a, the hooks of those needles 4 which are loca-ted opposite the projecting portions of the pressure edge 3a are closed, so that the hooks pass outwardly of the kinks of the thread S, as clearly shown in FIG. 1 for every second needle 4, so that the respective thread portions are knocked over. The other second needles move down with open hooks, since they .are loca-ted opposite the cutouts 3b, and consequently catch the intermediate thread portions as shown in FIG. 1, for example, for the first needle 4 at the bottom of FIG. 4.
The thread portions which are not caught by the hooks of needles 4 hang on the horizontal needles 5, and are formed into loops by the conventional motions of the needle 5.
vWhen needles 4 move farther down, the presser edge 2a becomes effective to close the hooks of needles 4, and those needles 4 which have caught a thread portion of thread 8 in an open hook, draw the respective thread portion through a loop in a. conventional manner. While a knit loop, or a purl loop, is formed on a needle 4, the corresponding needle S forms a purl loop, or a knit loop, respectively. Since in the illustrated embodiment only every second loop is knocked over the point of a needle 4, only every second needle 4 is associated with a horizontal needle 5, as best seen in FIG. 1. Consequently the number of needles 4 is twice the number of needles 5 or broadly speaking n times the number of needles 5, 4assuming that r1 is an integer greater than 1. lf the thus knitted fabric is to be continued as a knit-purl fabric, it is necessary to transfer the loops from needles 5 onto needles 4. In accordance with the present invention, the needles 5 are provided with la spreading projection best seen in FIGS. 6 and 7. The spreading projection is located at the center of the shank of the needle, and spaced f-rom the hook so as not to interfere with the normal knitting operations. The spreading projection includes a spreading Wall portion 5a of triangular shape which has a less inclined edge 5b, and a more inclined edge 5c. A rectangular catch projection 5d is provided on edge 5c and extends perpendicular to wall portion 5a. The plane in which the butt and spring-hook of the needle are located is perpendicular tothe plane in which the spreading wall portion 5a is located.
Referring now to FIG. 8, when it is desired to continue the knitting operation in such `a. manner that a knit-purl fabric is made, the needles A5 are moved toward the sinker head to such an extent that the wall 5a passes through the loop hanging on the respective needle 5 so that the loop is spread and is held by the catch projection 5d. The wedge-shape of the spreading wall portion Sa facilitates this operation, and the spread loop is moved by catch projection 5d into a position located above the respective needle 4 which has moved to the lower position illustrated in FIG. 9. When the needle 4 moves upward, as shown in FIG. 9, the hook passes through the spread loop, and the loop is transferred to the respective needle 4 and in this manner, all needles 4 carry loops, and when the knittinv operation is further continued, a knit-purl fabric is produced. During such further operation, the set of needles 5 is retracted, and does not participate in the operations.
The arrangement of the present invention in which an additional presser edge is provided for operating selected needles 4, permits the use of identical needles 4. This is a considerable advantage compared -with constructions of the prior art, in which the needles have to be provided with spring-hooks of different length.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of knitting machines differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a knitting machine including an additional presser edge, and needles provided with spreading projections for transferring loops, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made Without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing -will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to 'be comprehended Within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
