SAFETY MECHANISM FOR SLIDE ACTION REPEATING FIREARM Filed June 26, 1959 INVENTORS FRANK T. GREEN WILFRED 1. SMITH Miy ATTORNEY United States Patent This application is a continuation-in-part of applica- 0 tion Serial No. 668,719, filed June 28, 1957.
This invention relates to a new and improved safety mechanism particularly adapted for pump guns, and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a thumb-operated safety device mounted on and assol ciated with the receiver for the firearm, and including a sliding longitudinal safety button to be mounted on the top of the receiver of slide action repeating firearms which do not have stock tang extensions.
In the prior art it has been necessary to use a completely different type of safety, i.e., a cross-bolt type in slide action firearms particularly shot-guns, and whereas it is known in the art that the top mounted sliding longitudinal safety is the most desirable for users of firearms, it has not been used on slide action firearms and particularly shot-guns because of the fact that to do so would interfere with the action of the bolt and other operative parts of the firearm, and it is the general purpose of the present invention to provide a top mounted low-cost sliding longitudinal thumb operatethsafety but ao neceiver ztthe top surface thereof but by'reaserrof'the ton on the top of the receiver in slide action firearms particularly of the shot-gun type.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 shows a top plan view of one kind of firearm employing the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view in side elevation, with parts removed and in section;
FIG. 3 is a section on line 33 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a section on line 44 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a detail view of the safety showing it in safety position; and
FIG. 6 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the action of the thumbpiece.
In carrying out the present invention, the same is shown as applied to a slide action firearm particularly for shot-guns. In general there is shown a receiver 10, a barrel 12, a fore end indicated at 14 for operating the mechanism as is well known in the art, and there being a butt stock or the like 16. The receiver comprises a main frame member indicated at 18, said frame member having fixed thereto a rearward depending end portion or block 20 to which the butt stock 16 may be secured by means of a bolt or the like as conventional; and at its forward end frame member 18 is provided with means for receiving the barrel, the loading tube, the pump-bar, etc., as is well known in the art.
This frame member 18 is open at both sides thereof and is closed at the left-hand side by a left-hand plate 22, and at the right-hand side by a right-hand plate 24, both of which plates are easily removable and may be held in fixed relation to the frame by any means desired such as set-screws or the like.
. 6 A trigger frame unit 26 completes the assembly in general and this unit pivotally mounts a trigger 28 on the trigger-pin 30. The trigger has a rearwardly-extending arm terminating in a laterally ofl set member indicated at 32 and the entire trigger frame assembly may be mounted in any way desired, closing the receiver at the lower portion thereof. As seen in FIG. 3, the
3,006,096 Patented Oct. 31, 1961 offset portion 32 of the rearwardly-extending arm of the trigger extends to the right-hand side of the receiver in position to be engaged by an in-turned foot or the like 34 of a safety-lock lever 36 pivoted at 38 on a pin which may be mounted in the block 20.
This safety-lock lever is shown in firing position in FIG. 2 where the foot 34 is free of the portion 32 of the trigger, and in FIG. 5 the parts are shown in safety position so that the trigger cannot be pressed, due to the presence of the safety-lock lever offset at 34 in the position shown, contacting the member 32 of the trigger. It will be seen in FIG. 3 that the safety-lock lever 36 is mounted at the right-hand side of the block 20, close to the removable right-hand side plate 24.
The safety-lock lever 36 is generally positioned in upright condition and at its top or upper end terminates in a yoke 40, this yoke opening upwardly and receiving the right-hand end portion of a pin 42 by which means the safety-lock lever 36 may be rocked between the FIG. 2 and the FIG. 5 position, as will appear.
The pin 42 extends across the receiver transversely thereof and is mounted in a depending tang 44 which forms a part of a slider 46. This slider, or thumb-button, appears in exposed relation at the top surface of frame member 18 and is slidably located in a depression 48. Thus the safety-lock lever 36 is actuated between safe and firing conditions by means of slider 46, as diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. 6. However, it is to be noted that the slider itself is located centrally of the offset pin 42 extending to the right as in FIG. 3, the safety-lock lever 36 is enabled to be offset from the center of the receiver next to the removable right-hand slide plate 24 as clearly shown in FIG. 3. Likewise, the foot 34 is offset to the left in FIG. 3 and the rearwardlyextending offset portion of the trigger extends to the right, leaving the trigger 28 centrally located as usual.
A U-shaped spring which is generally indicated at 50 is mounted by means of out-turned ends 52, 52 in side walls 54, 54 of the frame member 18, these side walls being spaced and depending, and forming atop guide surface for the breech-bolt 56 in the sliding motion thereof from the fully-open condition as shown in FIG. 2 to breech-closed position thereof (not shown), under action of the fore end 14 actuating the breech-bolt through a pump-bar 57 as is Well known in the art. The two arms of the spring 50 bear on the cross-pin 42, maintaining the same selectively in either the solid line condition or the dotted line condition as shown in FIG. 6, so that wherever the slider 46 is manually located, both slider and locking lever will be held by means of the spring 50. The closed end of the spring 50 is held in position by the frame member 18.
At the rear end of the breech-bolt at the righthand side thereof, there is a cut-out or recess at 58 and this is for the purpose of receiving the yoke in the rearwardmost position of the breech-bolt 56, when the safetylocking member 36 is in firing condition as shown in FIG. 2.
From the above it will be clear that this invention presents a safety device for pump-actuated firearms in which instead of using the usual cross-bolt, a top mounted longitudinal sliding safety thumbpiece is pro- Vided and at the same time the breech-bolt has all of the rearward motion required as is usual without any interference between these two parts. At the same time, the construction is greatly simplified and is made more positive in operation. For the first time therefore in a firearm as above described, the user is presented with a top mounted safety which is apparent at a glance whether the same is forward or to the rear, and the usual indications in the groove or recess 48 can be used as to S and F or red and green dots to show the firing or safety conditions thereof. Other parts of the gun not described herein comprise the loading lever which is indicated at 60 and the bolt has the usual extraction means, etc., these parts, however, not forming a part of the present invention.
Having thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what We claim is:
A slide action shot-gun comprising a main frame, a fore end manually slidable forward and rearward, and a sliding breech-bolt associated with the fore end for actuation thereby, in combination, on the main frame, a safety-lock lever, a trigger, a rearward extension on the trigger, said safety-lock lever being located adjacent a side surface of the main frame and behind the rearwardmost position of the breech-bolt, a safety thumbslide on the main frame in exposed condition at the top exterior surface thereof, means on the safety slide con trolling the lever, the lever being pivoted intermediate its ends, the lower end thereof engaging the rearward extension on the trigger, a recess at the rear end of the breech-bolt for receiving a portion of the safety-lock lever when that portion is moved relatively forwardly as the lever pivots about its axis under influence of the thumb-slide.
