COMBINED LIQUID-MEASURE AND FUNNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,439, dated June' l7, 1884.
(X0 niodeLl To (055 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnoims T. Brsnor, a citizen of the United States, residing atWVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Liquid Measure and Funnel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to liquidmeasnres, and more particularly to that class wherein is combined in a single instrument a measure and funnel; and the object is to provide an instrument of this class wherein the liquid may be drawn from the stock barrel or tank, 1neasured,and transferred to the customer s receptacle; and to that end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts of the same, as will be here inafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of my improved liquid-measure in position for use as a measure. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the valve raised when used as a funnel.
A is the measure proper, and may be made of a size corresponding to any given capacity, the one shown in the present instance representing a quart-measure.
B is the bottom, and it is provided with a funnel, 0, through which the contents of the measure A may be allowed to escape. The top of the funnel O is provided with a valve, D, secured to the lower end of a rod, E, which extends upward through a guide, e, terminat ingin a handle, F, by means of which the valve maybe opened and closed.
G is a lateral extension on the rod E, which rests on the top of the guide e when the valve is raised, so as to retain it in that position when the measure is being emptied. The top a of the valve D. is provided with a plate having a hinge-joint, a, to which is secured a hinged bar, 0, connecting it with the similarly-hinged plate 0, secured to the bottom From this construction it will be seen that when the valve is closed it fits closely in the mouth of the funnel; but when it-is raised the pitman throws it to one side and entirely clear of the funnel, thus allowing a free passage of the contents. The rod E- is provided with washers 0, located at such points as will correspond to the standard of liquid-measures, as shown in Fig. 1.
To operate the measure the valve is closed and the liquid run in to the amount required, as indicated by the washers e. hen the proper amount is in the measure, the funnel C is inserted in the bottle or other receptacle, and the valve raised, when the contents will flow out. i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 15-
As a new article of manufacture, the measure A, provided with guide a and bottom 13, having-funnel C, in combination with the rod E, having handle F and curved extension G made integral therewith, and having the wash ers e and the valve D secured to the bottom B by means of the double-hinged bar 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS T. BISHOP.
