GEDEON PHILIP THOMPSON, OF OROWLEYS STATION, TEXAS.
TRAMPING ATTACHMENT FOR BALlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,163, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed April 11, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEDEON P. THOMPSON,
of Orowleys Station, in the county of Tarrant' and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Tramping Attachment for Baling- Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a contrivance of trampers and a crank with power mechanism for working them, in a simple arrangement for beating in the cotton on the follower preparatory to closing the press and completing the pressing by the follower, the device being calculated to enable the bales of full size to be made in a smaller case, and with less range of movement of the follower and moreeconomically than they can be made without the tramper, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a press case and follower with my improved trampi-ng attachment partly in section and partly in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the tramping-legs, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection of one of the tramping-legs.
Over a press-case, a, having the follower b at the bottom to be forced upward by a screw, 0, or other means to press the cotton d, and said case being adapted to be opened at the top for tramping in the cotton, and closed when the follower'is to be set in action, I arrange a crank-shaft, e, in any suitable supports, f, with a pulley, g, for driving it by a belt, h, said shaft having a crank, t, at each end with a tramping-leg suspended from each crank, said tramping-leg consisting of one grooved section, 3', suspended from the crank, and the notched section It, fitted in the groove of section j, for being extended or shortened, according as the cotton is low or high in the press'case, said sections It being secured in the different positions by a band, Z, and key m,
. said band and key being, together with the notches of the sections is, a ready means of fastening and unfastening the extension-legs.
Each leg has a foot, n, at the lower end ofsufficient size to constitute an effectual beater. As the cotton accumulates in the case a the legs are shortened up, so that when the case is full the legs are in the shortest condition, which allows of shifting them away from over the top of the case to allow the cover to beput on preparatory to forcing up the follower. The cranks i are preferably set opposite to eachother, so that one goes down when the other goes up, so as to balance the weight and steady the action.
The legs maybe made of wood or metal, as preferred, and they may be weighted, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a baling-press case, a, of a pair of tra'mping-legs suspended from a crankshaft located over the case, substantially as described.
' 2.- The combination, with the baling-press case a, and a crank-shaft, 6, located over the same, of extensible tramping-legs suspended from said crank-shaft and adapted for tramping the cotton or other material in the case to be baled, substantially as described.
3. The combination of extensible tramping-legs consisting of grooved section j and notched section k, fitted one within the other and secured by a band, I, and key m,with the crank-shaft e and the press'case a, said section j being suspended from the crank, and the section it having the tramping-foot a, substantially as described. I
4. The combination, with a press having a follower, 17,111 the bottom, and being arranged to open at the top, of a pair of trampers suspended from a crank-shaft located over the top of the case, said trampers being adapted to be contracted as the case fills, substantially as described.
, GEDEON PHILIP THOMPSON.
