J. H. CARVER.
GAR STEP. No. 299,959.Y Patented June 1o, 1,884.
UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. HENRY CARVER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-STEP.4
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 299,959, dated June 10, 1884.
Application tiled March 8,1884. (No model.) I
lTo all whom it may cou/cern:
Van additional or folding step which can be readily worked from the'platform, and which, when not in use, will not extend below the regular steps of the car. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the step as it appears when down and readyfor use. Fig. 2 is a side View of the mechanical contrivance and step when down and ready foi` use, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the mechanical contrivance and step when the latter is folded and not in use. Fig. 4 is a rea-r view of the mechanical contrivance and step when the latter is unfolded or down, as in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a small spring-brake which acts against the handle or rod,as hereinafter described. Figs. 6 and 7 show the staple or hinge to which the swinging supports are attached. Fig. 8 is a spring which 4acts upon the handle or rod, as hereinafter described. Fig. 9 is the rear brace or support adj usted to the folding step and made to catch or hook in a corresponding catch or hook adj usted to the step from which the folding step is suspended.
. The step A is supported at the sides by the swinging pendants B B, and when in position for use is made firm by the rear support, C, which, with the catch I), is made. to drop or fasten in a corresponding catch, E, the catch E being adjusted to the rear of the step from which the folding step is suspended, as aforesaid.
F is a rod or bar attached by a hinge or similar contrivance to the rear support, (l, and G is attached to F in like manner, the said G being a crank, and terminating in a smaller crank, H, to which the handle or rod I is adjusted, the said handle or rod to pass through or above the platform, so that when let or forced down it acts upon the cranks H and G, which in turn act upon the rod F, which, being attached to the support C, raises the step or lets it down, allowing the hook or catch D to drop into the corresponding hook or catch, E, affixed to the permanent step. The handle or rod I is held up, which closes the step C by the spring J, or, if there be no spring J, by the brake K,- and when let or pressed down, which unfolds or forces the step C out, is heldin that position by the said brake K, the handle or rod I having certain notches, into which the brake K enters, thereby holding the handle or rod I firmly, whether the same be up or down. The handle or rod I is to be operated by the hand, by a lever, by foot-pressure, or other method, vertically, horizontally, or otherwise, as may be deemed most expedient.
I therefore claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the permanent car-steps, of the'folding step A, supported at its sides by the swinging pendants B B and from the rear by a brace or fixture, C, said brace or fixture having its upper end arranged with a hook or catch to engage with a corresponding hook or catch, E, on the rear of the step from which the folding step is hung, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination ofthe brace C, furnished with a hook or catch, as described, rod E, crank G, crank H, rod I, folding step A, and permanent steps, all arranged substantially as described.
3. The herein-described device for raising and sustaining the rod I, consisting of the spring J, or its equivalent, substantially as set forth.
J. HENRY CARVER.
