WALLACE w. MILLER United States Patent 2,999,280 EXTRUDED THRESHOLD, SILL AND r FASCIA PLATE Wallace W. Miller, 205 N. 3rd, 'El Cajon, Calif. Filed May 9, 1960, Ser. No. 27,910
2 Claims. (CI. 20-64) This invention relates generally to improvements in structural units, and more particularly to a combined sill, threshold and fascia plate for doorways.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a structural unit which is perfectly adapted for being extruded and thereafter out to the required lengths to fit snugly into doorways of dilferent widths, the unit being so shaped that it can be adapted for use with sub-sill structure of varying dimensions and character, while always providing for an attractive, finished appearance in the completed structure.
Another object of this invention, ancillary to the preceding object, is to provide a structural unit wherein the threshold and sill are not only of unitary character but are further combined with a fascia plate, depending from the outer edge of the sill portion of the unit, fascia plate being of suificient vertical dimension to cover and mask the joints of sub-sill structure at the doorway, which joints are usually of somewhat unsightly character, when this portion of the building is not stuccoed, plastered or otherwise finished.
Another object of this invention, again closely related to each of the preceding objects, is to provide a fascia plate in such a structural unit of such character that this fascia plate has an equally important function when the adjacent portion of the building is stuccoed, plastered or otherwise finished, since in this instance the face of the fascia plate adjacent to the threshold is made flush with such stucco or plaster and provides adequate protection of the same, while presenting a very attractive finished appearance to the threshold and sill area.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a structural unit with a fascia plate of considerable frontal area and a lip flange adjacent the lower edge of the fascia plate and extending toward the threshold, this lip flange being imbedded in the stucco or plaster, when the same is employed in the building, and serving to strengthen the fascia plate against deformation, it being noteworthy that the fascia plate as such materially strengthens the outer edge portion of the sill against deformation due to traffic on the sill.
Finally, it is an object to provide a structural unit of the aforementioned character which is simple and convenient to install, which will provide the necessary sturdiness for such constructions and which will give generally eflicient and durable service.
With these and other objects definitely in view, this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the drawing which forms a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the combined threshold, sill and fascia plate, in perspective, the view being fragmentary in character; and
FIGURE 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the unit, portions of a door, doorway, sub-sill structure and stucco finish being indicated fragmentarily and in dash line.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the threshold,
generally indicated at 10, is essentially a horizontal plate, the upper surface of the threshold being provided with a series of parallel grooves 12, which grooves define thereice 2 between a plurality of ribs, thus improving the'appearance of the threshold and presenting an anti-skid surface. What will be considered the inner edge of the threshold is supported by an ogee leg =14 of a longitudinal length equal to that of the threshold and having at its lower edge a base flange 16, this base flange being preferably turned to present a horizontal lower face.
The outer edge of'the threshold 10 is supported by an inclined Wall 18 which is unitary at its lower edge with a vertical center leg 20. The center leg 20 is also of equal length with the threshold. A sill 22 is unitary with the top of the center leg 20 and the lower edge of the inclined wall 18,"and this sill constitutes essentially a' plate extending downwardly at a slight angle from the junction of said inclined wall and center leg, a distance of approximately three times the transverse dimension of the threshold 10. The upper face of the sill 22 is provided with series of parallel, superficial grooves 24 to improve the general appearance of the sill and to function as anti-skid means. The lower or outer portion of the sill 22 has unitary therewith a sill rest 26, which essentially a vertically thickened portion of the sill, the cross-sectional portion thereof being generally triangular and what will be considered the inner edge of this sill rest being extended toward the threshold as a flat horizontal tongue 28, this tongue 28 is a portion of the sill rest and functions in a like manner to aid in supporting the sill upon under-sill structure which will be mentioned hereinbelow.
A fascia plate 30 is formed with the outer edge of the sill 22 and depends therefrom vertically, or substantially so, a somewhat critical distance so that its vertical dimension is greater than the corresponding vertical edge dimension of the conventionally provided sub-sill structure or sub-flooring indicated at 32. In this connection, it should be noted that the joint of such sub-sill structure regularly occurring at the point 34 is ordinarily objectionable in appearance, and it is a feature of this invention that the fascia plate will cover this unsightly joint 34 and protect it from the elements.
The fascia plate, therefore, has a vertical dimension greater than the thickness dimension of the sub-sill structure or sub-flooring 3-2 and therefore provides desirable bracing or stressing of the outer edge of the sill against deformation under the impact of traflic over the sill.
The vertical dimension of the fascia plate may also be related to the transverse dimension of the threshold 10 and defined as approximately equal thereto since the tread portion, at least, of the threshold tends to be standardized. The rationality of proposing this relationship is also evident from a consideration of the fact that in instances Where the threshold is larger than usual, the sub-sill structure 32 will usually involve thicker members requiring fascia plates of greater vertical dimension to cover the joint 34 and to preserve an attractive and generally desirable proportioning of the unit. In other words, the vertical dimension of the fascia plate will always approximate the horizontal, transverse Width of the threshold.
In the interest of further strengthening of this portion of the unit, the fascia plate is provided with a horizontal lip flange 36, this flange having a secondary function inasmuch as it is always imbedded in stucco or plaster 38 when the same is employed in the building wherein the unit is installed. Obviously, the fascia plate protects such adjacent portion of the stucco or plaster, and the fascia plate and stucco are mutually reinforced by each other, when this invention is used.
The operation of this invention will be clearly comprehended from a consideration of the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the drawing and the above recited objects. It will be obvious that all said objects are amply achieved by this invention.
, Further description would appear to be unnecessary,
It is understood that minor variation from the form of the invention disclosed herein may be made .without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and that the specification and drawing are to be considered as merely illustrative rather than limiting.
I claim:
1. A unitary threshold-sill-fascia structural unit adapted to be formed by the process of extrusion, said unitary structural unit comprising a pair of spaced longitudinally extended legs, the innermost leg having a short flange adapted for placement on a s'ubsill, a substantially horizontal plate unitary with and extending between the top of said legs and defining an elevated threshold, a sill unitary with and sloping downwardly and outwardly from said threshold, at sill rest unitary with said sill and remote from said threshold, and a fascia plate unitary with said sill rest and depending vertically downwardly therefrom a distance substantially equal to the transverse dimension of said threshold to mask and protect the subsi-ll to a depth equal to said transverse dimension, and a lip flange extending inwardly from said fascia plate adjacent the lower end thereof, said lip flange being adapted to be buried in the front facing or a building below the sub-sill.
2. A structural unit according-to claim 1 where said sill rest has a tongue for placement on the sub-sill, in the same plane as the short flange, said tongue extending inwardly toward the legs through the entire longitudinal dimension of, said sill.
