Description

NVM. NV. JUSTIS, OF
ATnNT Finca.
GEN'I'IO, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT VIN MACHINES FOR STRAIGHTENING AND PRESSING TOBACCO.
Specification forining part of Letters Patent No. 29,976, dated September 1l, 1860.
To a/ZE whom, it may concer-11,:
Be it known that l, XV. XV. J Us'ris, of Genito, in the county of Powhatan and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Rolling Straight and Pressing Tobacco 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure 'i is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken through the machine in i'ront of the rollers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
This invention is an improved machine for straighteningaud pressing the leaves of tobacco. into solid cakes or bars.
It consists in passing the bundles of leaves between adjustable parallel clamps, vertical guide-rollers and guides, and horizontal yielding rollers, arranged and operating in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation,
Ais a strong table, having upright guides B B projecting up from each side, which latter support the rollers and guides between which the bundles of tobacco pass. rlhe bundles of tobacco-leaves are laid on that portion of the table lettered C and passed between the horizontal bars D D', the upper one ol" which is iixed in the movable sash E, which is worked between the upright guides B B by a foot-lever, E. The ends of this bar D' pass between the uprights B on each side of the machine, so that the bar will rise and fall in a vertical plane with the lower stationary bar, D. By depressing the foot -lever F, the bar D' will be brought down on the bundle of leaves that is laid on the lower bar, D, and by relieving the bar F from pressure the spring (i will elevate the bar D'. rlhe two bars just described are for the purpose of clamping and straightening out the bundle in the first part of the operation. After the bundle of leaves passes between the two clamps D D', it is reproperly to the pressing rollers'or drums J J The rollers H H have their upper bearings in a cross-bar, b, and their lower bearings in a cross-bar, c. (Shown in Fig. l.) rlhe tobacco is guided by rollers H to the horizontal rollers J which are enlarged cylindrical portions on a shaft, K, that has its end bearings on springs d d, and the ends of this shaft are between two of the upright guides BB. The rollers and shaft are thus allowed a yielding action as the tobacco passes between them and the upper drums or rollers, J', which are on a shaft, K', that has its end bearings in bifurcated vlevers LL, which are pivoted to two of the uprights B B, the upperI arms of which levers proceed forward and are so attached to the sash-frame E that when this frame is depressed the upper drums, J', will be depressed also, as indicated bythe red lines, Fig. l.
Behind each roller H, and between each drum on roller J and J' when these are depressed, are arranged iixed guides or tongues N N, which prevent the tobacco from getting down between the drums. These guides keep the tobacco between the upper and lower drums until it is delivered out'on the table C'. This table C' has a feed-roller, g, extending across it, its surface projecting just above the surface of the table. It is driven by an endless band, l), and carries oit' the pressed bundles after they have' left the rollers J J The twin spurwheels R R, with a crank, S, or any other convenient means, may be used to give motion to the rollers. n
vHaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clamping-bars l) D', sash -frame E, treadle F, perpendicular guide-rollers H H, and guides or tongues N N, with the movable drums J' and yielding drums J, the whole being combined, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
