UNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BURNS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OFv ONE-HALF TO JOHN S. W'ILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
CYCLOIVI ETER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,733, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed October 23,1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern-.- axially-arranged operating eccentric c2, which VBe it known that I, ROBERT BURNs, a citihas bearing upon a pin or stud, c?, upon the zen of the United States, and a resident of casingO, as shown in Fig. l. The face ofthe Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of' inner ratchet-wheel, c', is spaced off to form 55 5 Illinois, have invented a new'and useful Ima (hah/U, and its'hub is arranged to ride or provement in Oyclometers; aud I do hereby turn on the hollow hub of the outer wheel, c, declare the following to be av full, clear, and to enable such outer wheel-hub to receive the exact description of the same, reference being hand or pointer 0*, which moves infront of the 4.- had to the accompanying drawings, forming dial OQ to indicate the distance traveled. The` 6o 1o a part of this specification. number of teeth in one ratchet-disk will be one My invention relates to improvements in more than in the other, so that in the gradual that class of registering mechanism known as movement oi' such disks the one having the odometers77 or cyclometers,77 andwhich is Aleast number of teeth will gain the distance of specially adapted for use in the axial cavity one tooth, so that itwill require a numbeof, 6 5 15 of vehicle-wheels to indicate and register the revolutions of such disks equal to the number of distance traveled; and my improvement has ratchet-teeth therein to return the hand or for its objects, iirst, to provide a simple and pointer at to its original position at starting. compact device'capable of easy adaptation to A step-by-step motion is imparted to the the axial cavity in the outer end of the wheelratchet-disk at each revolution of the vehicle- 7o 2o hub; second, to afford means for locking the wheel by means of a dog or pawl, c, the face device securely in place in the hub-cavity, of which is of the width of both ratchet-disks, and yet permit of the ready removal of the so as to engage and operate both. This dog same for inspection by an authorized person, or pawl is pivoted to the outer end of a lever, and, third, to -supply an improved construce', i'ulcrumed at e2 to the casingC. The inner 75 25 tion whereby one of the registry-wheels will end of the lever is forked, so as to embrace act as a dial, while the other will carry the the operating-eccentric c2, and receive motion hand or pointer. I attain such objects by the therefrom asitis carried around with the revoarrangement of mechanism illustrated in the lution of the wheel. The operating-eccentric accompanying drawings, in which. c2 is held stationary by its square extension- 8o 3o Figure l is an axial section illustrating my pin c5, engaging in a square hole in the axle improvement adapted to the axial cavity of a or axle-nut, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. vehicle-wheel hub; Fig. 2, a section of same F is a protecting cover or face. for the dial at line w as; Fig. 3, a similar view at lline ao C and the operating parts, which is preferably x', and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail axial secof glass; yet it may in some case be of metal, 8 5

2. In a cyclometer, as hereinbefore described, the combination of the ratehet-wheel c, formed with a dial-face, C', the ratchet-wl1eel c, provided with a hand or pointer, and eam-lever and pawl-op erating` mech anisin all essentially as herein described and shown.
3. In a eyelometer, a pair of registering ratchet-disks whose centers are in the same line as the center of the axle of the vehicle wheel, and so arranged that the dial and pointer will face inward, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 18th day of October, 1883.
