Description

(ModeL) J. G. MATTELIN.
LOCK. N0. 299,486. Patented May 27, 1884.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONAS G. MATTELIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,486, dated May 2'7, 1884.
I Application filed June 1, 1863. (ModeL) nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the fol1owing is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to looks; and it consists in certainpeculiarities of construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a plan view with one of the side plates removed. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the lock-bolt. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the locking-arm; Fig. 6, the key, and Fig. 7 shows the adjustable locking slide or dog.
A represents a lock-case, of suitable size and shape, provided with a lock-bolt, B, formed with a slot, 12, in its rear end and a notch, b, in one side of its shank, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. .In rear of its head this bolt is also formed with two curved grooves, b b'*, extending across its face, as shown. Upon a stud, c, which is secured to the case and projects through the slotted end of the lock-bolt, is pivoted the locking-arm 0, having a groove in its under side near the outer end, in which is placed a curved locking-dog, D, formed with 'a downwardly-projecting flange, d, at each end, the space between these flanges being exactly the width of the lock-bolt. The arm G is provided with a suitable spring, E, bearing against the case A, and adapted to hold it in proper position.
It Will be readily understood by reference to the drawings that when the key is turned the arm 0 is pushed back till the opening between the flanges d on the dog coincides with the lock-bolt, when the key contacts with said bolt and shoots it forward or backward, as the case may be, and the spring immediately throws the arm 0 forward, the flange upon one end of the dog engaging with one of the grooves in the bolt and looking it either forward or back. The lock may thus be changed at an time, should a key be lost, so that the old one would not fit, and any one finding and attempting to use it would be foiled by not knowing the adjustment of the dog, and consequent change to be made in the key.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a look, a lock-bolt provided with transverse grooves and notches for engagement with the key, in combination with a movable springactuated arm carrying a locking dog or slide adapted to be adjusted in the arm and secured by a set-screw, and formed with a notch, as shown, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
