To all whom it may concern.-

. Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. Snn'nnnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alfred Centre, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TripMechanisms for Horse Hay-Rakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure lis atop View of as much of a horserake as is necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 00 as, Fig. 1.

My invention has relation to trip mechanisms for self-dumping horse-rakes and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the rake-head, which is mounted upon and turns at its ends in the wheels A, and is hinged to the rear ends of the shafts B, which are connected by cross-pieces 0, having a central longitudinal board, D, resting upon and secured to. them. A plate, E, is fastened upon the upper side of the rake-head, and forms bearings for a flat bolt, F, sliding forward and back upon the rake-head, and having a proojecting pin, G, near ,its rear end, upon which a toggle-arm, II, is pivoted at one end and a longer toggle-arm, I, pivoted at its middle, and-having one end projecting beyond said pin. The forward ends of these toggle-arms are pivoted upon pins at or near the centers of two arms, J, which are pivoted at their rear ends upon the baseplate E, and have the ends of a coiled spring, K, which is secured upon the front side of the rake-head by a clamp, L, fastened near their outer ends, the said spring serving to force the arms together. The free forward ends of the arms J have horizontally perforated downwardlyprojecting lips M, in which the inner ends of two laterally-extending rods or bolts, N, sliding in bearings upon the rakehead, slide,

said rods having pins or enlarged heads upon their inner ends inside the perforated'lips,

serving to prevent them from slipping through 5 5 the perforations. The sliding rods-are provided with spiral springs O, coiled around their inner ends against the perforated lips upon the arms, and'with their outer ends against enlargements P upon the rods, forcing 6c the same outward, and at the same time allowing them to yield inward. A lever, Q, bent at an obtuse angle, and having its rear end, B, which is turned upward, notched, is pivoted at its elbow upon the rear end of the longitudinal board between the rear ends of the shafts, and has its forwardly-projecting end S weighted. The wheels of the rake may be provided with disks upon their hubs, having notches or projections adapted to engage the outer ends of the laterally-sliding rods, when the same are thrown out by forcing the pivoted arms apart, which is accomplished byv drawing the free end of the longer toggle arm or lever forward by any suitable connection or attachment; and it will be seen that as the wheel turns the projections or notches upon the disks will force the ends of the laterallysliding rods and the rake-head with them to tilt forward, which will raise the teeth and dump the gathered hay, whereupon, when the forward end of the longitudinally-sliding flat bolt F strikes the notched end of the lever Q the said bolt will be forced rearward, drawing the'togglearm rearward and allowing the I ends of the coiled springs .to force the forward ends of the pivoted arms together, which will draw the laterally-sliding rods in out of engagement with the disks upon the wheels,

which will allow the rake-head to tilt back 0 again, bringing the teeth to bear upon the ground, when the same operation may be repeated as often as the rake is full.

Any other suitable engaging devices be tween the wheels and the ends of the laterally-sliding bolts may. be'used without departing from the spirit of my invention, the device shown in the drawings, and herein described, being merely shown and described for the purpose of more plainly illustrating 100 the operation of the device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a self-dumping horse-rake, the combination of a rake-head having a plate upon its upper side provided with sliding bearings, a bolt sliding in said bearings, a long and a short toggle-arm pivoted upon a pin upon said bolt, the long toggle-arm being adapted to be drawn forward, two arms pivoted at one end and provided with horizontally-perforated lips at their forward ends, the togglearms pivoted upon the middle of said arms, aeoiled spring having its ends also secured at the middle of said arms, two horizontal rods sliding in said perforated lips and in bearings upon the rake-head, and having pins or enlargements at their inner ends, spiral springs wrapped around the inner portions of said rods and bearing against the perforated lips of the pivoted arms and against enlargements upon the rods, a lever having a notched upwardly-turned inner or rear end, and pivoted upon the frame between the rear ends of the shafts, and the wheels of the rake having means for engaging the ends of the laterallysliding rods, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
