Claims. (Cl. 20-53) This invention relates to improvements in window sashes of the double `glazed type land more particularly to the reinforcement and pivotal mounting of a supplementary sash frame for swinging movement in a main frame to open and closed positions.
QA, particular object of this invention is to provide a supplementary sash frame with corner reinforcing members receivable within the marginalv edges of the frame and to ywhich one ann of a hinge of a novel type is secured for mounting the supplementary sash frame for swinging movement in a recess provided in `a main sash frame to open and closed positions.
Another object is to provide a novel type of hinge construction comprising a horizontally disposed hinge plate adapted to carry a sashframe and a second hinge plate pivoted -at one end to one end of said lirst plate for pivotal movement of said plates relative to one another about a vertical axis, said second plate having a portion thereof remote from its pivotal connection disposed parallel to the pivoted axis and adapted to be secured to a second frame at right angles to the connection of said first hinge plate to said first frame so as to provide swinging movement of said first frame relative to said second frame about va vertical axis.
A particular feature of this invention resides in the provision of an inexpensive and novel hinge construction which is mountable in substantially concealed relation between a frame and a second frame so a's to afford swinging movement of said first frame into and out of a recessed portion of said second frame.
The above and other objects, advantages and features characteristic of this invention will be understood more readily from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- FIG. l is a perspective view of a corner section of a window embodying my invention.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along the lines 2-2 of FIG. l.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of a metal sheet lfrom which a corner reinforcing member embodying my invention is formed.
FIGS. 4 and 5 are elevational views 'showing progressive steps in the formation of ra corner reinforcing member from the sheet shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. l6 is a perspective view of a hinge embodying my invention.
FIG. 7 is a perspective view showing the corner member and the hinge in assembled relation.
FIG. 8 is a sectional view taken along the lines 8-#8 of FIG. 7.

Referring more .particularly to the drawings, S designates a main sash frame in which an outer glazing 6 is secured in any suitable manner in a recess 7 provided therefor. The inner side of frame 5 is provided with a recess 8 adapted to receive a supplementary sash frame 9 in which the inner glazing panel I10 is secured.
The supplementary sash frame is provided with a groove 11 along its inner edge into which the glazing panel is received and a second groove 12 along its outer edge into which an L-shaped, corner reinforcing member is received. As will be seen in FIGS. 3 to 5,
2,993,241 Patented July 25, 1961- the corner reinforcing member is formed from a T-shaped metal strip which is recessed, as indicated at l16, at the juncture of its arms l17, 18 and 19. 'I'he strip is lirst folded along the dotted lines 20 of arm 19 to -form one channel shaped leg 21 of the corner member (see FIG. 4). Marginal portions of arms 17 and 18 are then infolded along the dotted line 22 to form the second channel shaped leg 23 of the corner member (see FIG. 5). Alternatively, the marginal portions of arms y17 and 18- may be -infolded along'vdotted lines 22 and then arm`19 folded along dotted lines, 20.
FIG. 6 illustrates a hinge comprising a horizontal plate 25 and an L-shaped plate member including an arm 26, overlying one end of plate 25 and hinged thereto at 27 to swing 4about a vertical axis, and a second arm 28 dis posed at -ri-ght angles to said first arm 26. The leg 23 of corner reinforcing member has its web portion spot welded to the upper surface of hin-ge plate 25, as shown at 29 in FIG. 9. The spot welding also serves to unite the infolded marginal portions of the arms 1-7 and d8 which constitute the web of the channel shaped leg 23.
The hinge and corner reinforcing member is tted to te supplementary sash frame 9 with one leg 21 of the corner member disposed within the groove 12 of the vertical rail of the sash frame 9 and the other leg 23 disposed within the groove '12 of the adjacent horizontal rail of said frame 9. The corner member is secured to the frame 9 by screws 30 which extend into the rails of frame 9 from the inner surface thereof through openings which are drilled in vthe assembled rails `and legs 21 and 23 of the corner reinforcing member, as indicated Y To mount the supplementary sash frame `9 in the main frame 5, the hinged end of hinge plate 25 and the overlying arm 26 of Ithe second hinge plate are inserted in a horizontal recess 32 of the vertical rail of the main sash frame 5. Anm 28 of the hinge is then flatly secured by screws 33 extending through holes 34 in said arm to one side wall defining the recess 8 in the vertical rail of main sash 5, as shown in FIG. 2.
The above mounting provides Ifor swinging of the supplementary sash frame 9 about a vertical axis but one side of the main sash 5 to allow the supplementary sash frame 9 to be swung into and out of the recess 8 in said main sash frame without interference between the marginal projection 35 of frame 9 and the underlying inner surface of main sash frame 5 at the hinged side thereof. This arrangement also affords substantially complete concealment of the hinge when the lframe 9 is in the recess 8 except for small portions of the hinge members 25 and 26 about the hinge connection 27.
Although I have only shown one hinge construction at the bottom of the frames 5 and 9 it will be understood that the upper section of the -frames will be similarly hingedly connected by inverting the hinge so that hinge plate 25 is secured to the upper surface of the horizontal rail of supplementary sash frame 9 with the arm 2'8 of the other hinge plate projecting downwardly and secured along the yface of recess 48 opposite the outer edge of the vertical rail of the supplementary sash frame 9. A horizontal recess similar to recess 32 is also provided in the upper section of the vertical rail of main sash frame 5 to receive the hinged end of plate 25 and arm 26 of the second hinge plate. However, due to the in- Verted position of this second hinge, plate 25 will overlie the arm 26 of the second hinge plate.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are declined as follows:
1. In a window construction, a rectangular main frame, a rectangular supplementary frame receivable within said main frame, said supplementary frame being l v in 3 grooved along its outer end inforcing member having its arms receivable in the grooved surfaces of adjacent sides of said supplementary frame to provide a reinforced corner therefor, means securing siad corner reinforcingrnember in 4said grooves, a hinge mounting said supplementaryframe in saidV main frame for swinging movementY of said supplementary frame relative to said main frame, said hinge comprising a horizontally disposed hinge plate atly secured to one arm of said corner reinforcing member lying in the groove of one horizontally disposed rail of said supplementary frame with a marginal portion of said hinge plate extending beyond said outer grooved edge of the adjacent vertical rail of said supplementary frame, and la vsecond hinge plate shaped to provide an arm disposed in lapping relation to the extendingv marginal portion of said rst plate and a second arm at right-angles to said first arm, said second arm being disposed to lie along the inner vertical edge of said main frame normally opposing the outer edge of said vertical rail of the supplementary'frame, means securing said second arm to the main frame, and an axis pin connecting said rst arm of 4the second plate to said marginal portion of said first plate for swinging movement of the tirst plate relative to the said first arm of the second plate about a vertical axis whereby said supplementary frame is swung into and out of its closed position with respect to said main frame.
2. A -window construction as set forth in claim 1, in which said corner member securing means comprises screw members extending through one side of the supplementary frame and complementary openings provided in the corner member, said screws -being embedded in said frame beyond said corner member.
, 3.1A window construction as set forth in claim 1, in which the inner edge of said main frame is recessed at one side of the frame to receive said supplementary frame therein, said hinge plate second arm being secured along edges, an Lshaped corner re- Y the vertical wall dening said recess at right-angles to said side of the main frame, said main frame being further provided with a horizontal recess in the vertical Wall to receive the hinged portions of said hinge plates.
4. A window construction as set forth in claim 1, in which said corner reinforcing member arms are of channel shaped configuration, the sides of each channel being receivable in the groove of the supplementary frame with the web portion disposed ush with the surface of Ithe frame end edge.
5. A hinge for swinging connection between a main frame and a supplementary frame receivable therein, including a at hinge securing plate having a co-planar extension and a second plate shaped to provide an arm member atly overlying said extension of said rst plate and a second arm member disposed with its broad surfaces at right angles to the plane of the4 first arm, said first plate extension and said first arm being y'pivotally connected for relative movement `about an axis -at right angles to said iirst plate and said first arm and parallel to said second arm, an L-shaped frame reinforcing member extensible along adjacent end edges of the supplementary frame, one of the arms of said reinforcing member being secured along the length of said vfirst plate to the exteni sion thereof and the other of the arms of said reinforcing member extending parallel to the second arm of said second hinge plate for swinging movement about `the axis of vsaid hinge relative to the second hinge plate.
