SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,248, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed January 29, 1834.
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL A. MYERS and JOHN J. KELLY, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Gotton Choppers and Scrapers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the chopping of cotton-plants to a stand and the scraping of the rows of plants, and also to promote convenience in adjusting and controlling chopping and scraping machines.
The invention consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
A is the frame of the machine, to the forward end of which is attached the tongue 13. The axle O of the wheels D is attached to the lower sides of the side bars of the frame A a little in the rear of their centers.
To the inner side of one of the wheels D is secured a large beveled gear-wheel, E, into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of the small beveled gear-wheel F, attached to the rear end of a shaft, G. The rear end of the shaft G revolves in a bearing, H, placed in a slotted bracket, I, attached to the side bar of the frame A. The bearing H is held outward by a spiral or other spring, J, placed between the said bearing and the inner end of the slot in the bracket I, the said spring being made of sufficient strength to hold the gear-wheels E F in gear under ordinary circumstances. The spring J also allows the gear-wheels to be forced and held out of gear while the machine is traveling from place to place.
To the side of the small gear-wheel F are bolted one or two cams or sliding blocks K, which come in contact with segmentsL, attached (N0 model.) V
said gear-wheel will be stopped as the cams K come in contact with the segments L, so that the revolution of the gear-wheel E will revolvethe gear-wheel F a less number of times, and will thus leave more plants in a hill. The forward part of the shaft G revolves in a bearing in a bracket, N, attached to the side bar of the frame A. To the forward end of the shaft G is at tached a small crank, O, to which is pivoted the end of a connecting-rod, P, the other end of which is pivoted to the chopper-standard Q at a little distance from the upper end of the said standard.
To the lower end of the standard Qis bolted or otherwisesecured the chopping-hoe B, which is made with a cutting edge at each side, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the cl1opper-standard Q is pivoted to the inner end of a bar, S, the outer end of which is pivoted to the front cross-bar of the frame A.
Upon the forward side of the upper end of the chopper-standard Q, or of the bar S, is formed a boss or projection, T, to rest upon the upper side of the forward cross-bar of the frame A and limit the downward movement of the said standard.
In the middle part of the bar S is formed a longitudinal slot to receive the pin of a small crank, U, attached to the end of a shaft, V, which revolves in bearings formed in or attached to the forward cross-bars of the frame A.
To the rear end of the shaft V is attached a crank-arm, W, the outer end of which is widened to form a foot-rest, or has a foot-rest attached to it, so that the driver, by pressing the outer end of the crank-arm W downward with his foot, can raise the chopper-standard Q to raise the chopping-hoe R above the ground when desired.
To the inner sides of the rear parts of the side bars of the frameAare hinged, by bolts X, the upper ends of the scraper-standards Y.
To the lower ends of the standards Y are attached rearwardly-projecting feet Z, to give steadiness of movement to the scrapers While at work. The forward sides of the lower ends of the standards Y are beveled to form seats for the scrapers or sweeps a, and give the said scrapers asuitable inclination. to the center of which is hinged, by an eyebolt or other suitable means, the rear end of a connecting-rod, d. The forward end of the rod (1 is hinged to the lower end of the lever e, which is pivoted to a support attached to the middle cross-bar of the frame A. The upper end of the lever 6 projects into such a position that it can be conveniently reached and operated by the driver from his seat to raise the scrapers from the ground when desired.
The driver s seat f is attached to the upper end of the spring-standard g, the lower end of gearing with a cog or gear wheel on the driving-wheel, said pinion carrying a block sliding on smooth-faced segments disposed at intervals along the outer edge of the gear-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined cotton chopper and scraper, the combination,with the chopper-standard Q and the frame A, of the pivoted and slotted bar S and the shaft V, having crank-arms U W, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the chopper can. be readily raised from the ground, as set forth.
