SHIP-BUILDING.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, S. L. PIONNIER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Vessels; and I do hereby declare, that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing', forming a part of this speciiication, in which* Figure l, represents a transverse vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference t0 the drawings.
The frames or ribs A are secured to the keel B, and each frame is composed of the lioors, first, second third fourth and fifth futtocks, and of the top timbers in the usual manner. Instead however of arranging the frames so that an open space is left between them, I place the same in close contact. By these means I am enabled to produce a vessel which is perfectly safe under all circumstances and which does not require any filling between the frames. When a vessel constructed according to my invention comes in contact with a rock or with another vessel, no damage arises which would endanger the life of the crew or passengers which may be on board and the keel of my vessels is not liable to hogging or to bend upl in the center a result which with ordinary vessels is produced by the disproportion in the displacement of, or weight sustain-ed by the middle portion of the vessel as compared with the bow and stern.
The frames A, thus secured to the keel I unite by a stout chain or bar of metal C, which passes from stem to stern, being drawn through holes in the frame timbers as clearly shown in F ig. E2 and being secured to the stern post and to the stern post or to other posts fastened in both ends of the keel for the purpose of retaining said chain or bar and also a series of bars or wire ropes D, which pass through the frame timbers. Another series of chains D, are placed across the frame timbers in a direction at right angles to the keel, whereby the, stability of said timbers is materially increased. The safety of the vessel is increased by a large tube E, which encircles its entire hull being filled with air, so that in case of a leak and if the vessel should begin to sink, said tube is enabled to buoy it up and to prevent it going down altogether.
The crevices which may exist between the frames, are stopped up by calking and for the sake of greater safety I have secured to the inside as well as to the outside thick sheets o, of leather or of any other suitable material prepared so as to withstand the injurious influence of the sea water and made perfectly Awater tight. These sheets will be covered by planks on the inside as well as on the outside and by these means the frame timbers are perfectly protected against the influence of the sea water and a leakage of the vessel is most effectually prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A ship or vessel constructed with the timbers in close contact in combination with the wire or metallic supports running fore and aft and athwartships, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
