BREECHL-LOADING FIRE-ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,982, dated May 20, 1884.

Be it known that we, Pius KAUL and CHARLES KAUL, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to breech-loading firearms in which the breech is opened and closed by means of a vertically-sliding block;- and the invention consists of the novel construction, hereinafter described and claimed.

C C are the side plates, and D D are the arms, to which the stock is to be secured by means of the screw-bolt D'. The hammer E, pivoted at E in a suitable support, preferably the forward end ofthe lower stock-arm, D, is provided with a recess, E2, in its rear under side, into which one end of the hammerspring F is inserted. Below the recess E2 the hammer is provided with a projection, E5, having two notches or rests, Ef, for the scar H2 of the trigger H, which is pivoted at H in the lower arm, D. i
I is a spring, which gives the trigger aforward tendency, and holds the Sear H2 in engagement with the notches in the hammer when it is cocked. The hammer-spring F and trigger-spring I are secured by a single screw to the upper surface of the lower stock-arm, D.
I2 is a rear projection on thetrigger, to limit its movement between the under side of spring I and the upper side of the triggerguard J.
The hammer E, in its under side, is provided with a curved recess, E3, with which engages a short arm, G, of the hand-lever G, which lever is pivoted at K in the forward end of the (No model.)
lower stock-arm, D, below and a little in advance of the hammer-pivot E. The curve of the recess E2 is so formed with respect to the arm G and the pivot K of the lever carrying said arm that the hammer may be cockedV by the arm G when the latter is thrown forward by the downward or rearward movement of the lever, and when cocked will not be further affected by the movement of the lever. The lever G is also provided with an arm, G3, which extends forward in front of the arm G and is curved slightly downward, and which engages with the vertically-sliding block L by means oi' an opening, L2, extending through said block from rear to front. The bottom of the opening L2 is curved to conform to the shape of the arm G3, which bears on the same in pulling down the block, while the upper wall of the opening is also slightly curved at'the front, and is beveled off at the rear to form a shoulder, g, against which the end of the arm G3 rests when the block is raised to its highest position, and whereby said arm is adapted to serve as a brace for securely supporting the block when the breech is closed. With this construction the`1ever G is adapted to pull down the block L and cock the hammer by a single downward or rearward movement, while its succeeding forward or upward movement again elevates the block to close the breech without disturbing the cocked hammer.
M is the percussion-bolt, supported in an opening, L4, in the block L. The bolt is provided with a spiral retracting-spring, M3, and a recess, M2, forming transverse shoulders therein, with `which shoulders a pin, M', in serted transversely through the block L, engages to limit the movement of said bolt. The action of such a bolt in exploding a cartridge is well known.
rIhe cartridge-extractor O consists of a lever, O', pivoted at O within a recess in the bridge B, and provided with two arms, O", extending upward in recesses formed in opposite sides of f ioo to operate the cartridge-extractor only at the l end of the downward movement of the block L. rlhe cartridge-extractor is returned to its normal position by the contact of the block L with the arms O in its upward movement. Vhen the arm O2 is drawn down by action of the block L, the ends of the extractonarms O* engage the flange of the cartridge and force the shell partly out on top of the block L, from which it may be removed by hand. Vhen the block L is up, the extractor-arms OJe lie within recesses A in opposite sides of the barrel, and the cartridge, when inserted, lies with its flange resting against shoulders a on the inner surfaces of the arms 0*, by which shoulders the arms are enabled to engage and extract the cartridge.
B is a lugon the forward part of the bridge B, and B2 is a spring-catch attached thereto for engaging the free end of lever G and holding it in position for closing the breech. y
L is a iiange to limit the upward movement of block L.
What we claim isl. The combination of the hand-lever G, having the arms G G2, the sliding block L, having an opening, L2, receiving arm G, and the hammer E, having the curved recess E2, receiving arm G and being engaged thereby, substantially as shown and described, whereby the lever is adapted to pull down the said block and cock the yhammer simultaneously, and then to return the vblock and leave the hammer cocked. l
2. The combination of the lever G, having arm G, and the sliding block L, having the opening L2, provided with a curved bottom, against which said arm G3 may be made to bear to pull down the block, and a shoulder, g, at its top, against which the end of arm G3 may be made to bear to hold the block in a raised position, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the verticallysliding block L, having the vertical longitudinal openings L2 and Z, the opening Z being of greater vertical extent than the opening L2, the lever G, having the arm G3 placed in the opening L2, and the cartridge-extractor having the arm O2 placed in the opening Z, wherebyT the block may be drawn down and the cartridgeextractor may be operated Vonly at the end ofi-the downward movement of the block, substantially as speciiied.
