s claims. (ci. z114) This invention generally relates to articles of wearing apparel, and more specifically to accessories lused in connection the washing land setting of womens hair. In the particular form hereinafter to be described, the invention `1s an article of apparel which may be positioned on a womans head as a turban, and then used with equal eilic1ency as av pin trayy so as toy enable the beauty operator to Ihave a ready supply of curlers, pins or the like may be required in the setting or other treatment In :beauty parlor operations, after the customers hair has been Washed, it is customary for the operator to place -a turkish towel or the like around the customers head so as to absorb excess water from the hair in preparation for combing, application of Waving solution, or setting thereof. In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, therejis provided a novel article in the form of a turban, constructed of a water absorbent material such as turkish toweling, so as to permit the absorption of the excess Water from the hair when placed on the customershead. After this function has been accomplished, the operator may readily and conveniently place the article in a second position around the neck of the wearer, which will not only prevent water from run ning down the lcustomers neck, but will likewise serve to provide a simple and ready tray or support for the equipment used in the combing and setting of the hair, stlich as curlers, bobby pins, hair pins, combs and the li e. I
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an article of the type described which may be simply formed and constructed and which will pei-mit a ready conversion from a snug fitting turban around a persons head into a neck tray as above described.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an article of the character described in which complementary snaps or other fastening means are utilized to adjustably secure the article on 'the head or around the neck of the wearer to insure a rapid and proper positioning and retention of the article in place for its respective functions wit-hout 'danger of displacement, and which may be laundered in the same manner as towels or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of the character described in which the'tray portion thereof extends outwardly and is nonmally positioned adjacent the back of the wearer but which may be alternately used adjacent the front of the wearer so as to act as a food catching receptacle suchas might be used in the feeding of infants or small children.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of the type hereinabove referred to which is formed entirely of soft flexible material, and in which the tray portion actually forms a part of the tunba'n'thereby avoiding any discomfortor inconvenience to the wearer or to the person placing the same on or removing the same from the wearers head, yet which when used as a neck tray possesses sufficient form-retaining rigidity to prevent accidental dropping of the objects placed therein, and which likewise serves as an rabsorbent receptor for water, lotions `or the like which might drop froml the wearers hair.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which in its open or tray position may be used as a sun'shade such as around swimming pools or the like by placing the same around the wearers head rather than around the neck.
Thevinvention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form .of the invention which is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood, however, that variations lin the showing made by the said drawing and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth l in the claims.
Referring to said drawings: l
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the combination tui-ban and tray of the present invention in a substantially at inoperative position. Y
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which the article is formed.
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken substantially in the plane indicated by line 3--3 of FIGURE l.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the article as used -as a turban on a womans head viewed from the front and one side.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view similar to FIGURE 4 but viewing the turban from the rear.
FIGURE 6 is another perspective View of the article shown in operative position around the neck of the wearer when utilized as a pin etc. receiving-tray.
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of one of the blanks illustrating a preferred manner of construction of the article.
FIGURE 8 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of FIGURE 6.
FIGURE 9 is a cross sectional view taken in the plane 9--9 of FIGURE 6.
The article of the present invention is preferably formed of exible water absorbent material such as turkish toweling, terry cloth or the like, and is provided with suitable means to be more fully described hereinafter permit'- ting its ready conversion from the turban arrangement illustrated in FIGURE 4 of the drawing to the tray arrangement shown in FIGURE 6. The article in plan view, as shown in FIGURE l, has a generally elongated arcuate configuration with an outer edge generally designated at 12. of a relatively large radius of curvature and an inner edge 13 of a smaller radius of curvature, which, when used as a tray, comprises the neck encircling portion of the article. Preferably, and for reasons of economy and simplicity of construction, the article may be formed from a pair of superimposed identical pieces of material such as the blank 14 shown in FIGURE 2. As will be seen, each piece or blank includes a central body portion 16 having a Vstraight edge 17 at one end thereof and an arcuate recess 18 at the other end thereof which in its inished or assembled form constitutes the edge 13. The opposed sides 19 and Z1 of the central body portion are provided with integral wings 22 and 23 which commence in spaced relation to edge 17 and extend laterally beyond the edges 19 and 21. The wings merge with the recess 18 by means of a semicircular reentrant curve thus forming ears 26 adjacent their lower ends, while tip portions 20 are arranged to be angularly olfset from the central body portion 16. In the formation of the article from the blanks, as shown in FIGURE 7 the edge y17 is folded upon itself along the fold line V25 to provide two thicknesses of material thereby creating suflicient rigidity to produce the tray effect illustrated in FIGURE 6. The edges 19 and 21 are then stitched to their respective wings along a line 30 disposed at right angles to the edges 19 and 21 as viewed in FIGURE 2, thereby forming two opposed corners 24. The tip portions 20 of the wings are folded back upon themselves as indicated at 35 in FIGh URE 7 in order to provide two thicknesses of material adjacent the corners 24. The two blanks are then stitched together along their marginal edges as best shown in FIG- URES 1 and 3 of the drawing so that the upper medial edge portion 12 comprising the area between the corners 24 as well as triangularly shaped areas adjacent each corner is composed of four plies of material. Additional rows of stitching may be added adjacent the edge portion 12 to provide additional reinforcement and to maintain the four plies in position.
Again referring to FIGURE 1 of the drawing, it will be seen that each end portion of the article on opposite sides of the central body portion 16 is in the form of an ear 26 and positioned on one of the ears are three male snap fasteners 27, one of which is positioned at the -free end of the ear while the other two fasteners are'positioned in spaced relation to one another adjacent the main body portion 16. On the other ear two complementary female fasteners Z8 are provided, one being disposed at the free end of the ear and the second fastener being secured adjacent the body portion 16 of the article. While snap fastners are illustrated in the drawing, it'will be appreciated that any suitable fastening means could be utilized in place of the snaps illustrated and described.
When the article as described above is used as a turban as `shown in FIGURES 4 and 5 the same is placed around the wearers head, and the ears 26 are brought into overlapping relationship so as -to selectively snap the female fastener 2S which is disposed at the free end of one ear into one of the two male fasteners positioned adjacent the body portion 16 on the other ear. Likewise, the male fastener at the free end of such other ear may, if desired, be engaged with the second female fastener. This, of course, will substantially provide a closed loop formed by the edge 13, positioned at the top of the wearers head with the other edge `12 extending desirably about the wearers head. This is the manner in which the article is used substantially immediately after the hair has been washed so that the material from which the article is constructed may absorb excess water therefrom preparatory to combing or other operations.
Normally, after the turban has been worn for a relatively short period of time, the hair will be in condition for combing, setting or the like. Then, it is merely necessary to unfasten the snaps 27 and 28 and cause rthe surface 36 of the article closest to the hair to fall outwardly with the other surface 31 then resting on the wearers shoulders. The ears 26 are brought down adjacent the front of the wearers neck and the fasteners at the free ends of the ears snapped together. However, due to the corners 24 and the rigidity effected by the extra folds of material illustrated at 32 in FIGURE 3, the article may be caused to assume the shape shown in FIGURES 6 and 7. More specifically, the extra folds of material 32 define an elongated ridge or side wall adjacent medial edge portion 12 and projecting upwardly therefrom. The multiple thicknesses of material due to folded over tip portions adjacent the corners 24 at the opposite ends of the ridge than extend substantially perpendicularly inward from these corners to the plane of the remainder of the body as draped across the back portion of the shoulders of a wearer. The multiple thicknesses of material adjacent corners 24 hence define end wall portions between the upright ridge and main body portion of the article. A substantially continuous groove or trough is thus formed between the multiple ply ridge and main body, which groove is terminally bounded by the multiple ply end wall portions adjacent corners 24. This provides a tray or receptacle for receiving objects 33 such as pins, curlers, and the like.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that it is extremely simple to convert the turban into the tray and by virtue of the reversal of sides of material, the wetter portion of the turban will not be placed against the wearer, even though in conventional practice a waterproof shoulder protector is placed around the wearers body. If desired, the tray could be rotated around the wearers neck which would provide a ready receptacle such as for feeding babies or the like and conversely, the tray could be placed on top of the wearers head to serve as a sunshade, the snaps in such event being naturally positioned adjacent the rear of the wearers head.
What is claimed is:
1. An article of the character .described comprising a substantially integral piece of flexible water-absorbent rnaterial and including a central body portion having a relatively at arcuate outer edge of large radius of curvature and an arcuate inner edge of lesser radius of curvature, and generally arcuate opposed ends having outer side edges extending convexly between and merging smoothly with said inner and outer edges, fastening means on said ends whereby said ends may be adjustably and releasably secured together, a stiffened ilap extending along the outer edge of said central body portion medially of the ends thereof, and means securing the end edges of said stiifened flap to said central body portion and thereby forming an open pocket therebetween so that when said ends are secured together the body portion may be caused to form in one position a hat-like structure and in a reversed position a tray like structure wherein said pocket serves as a receptacle.
2. An article as set forth in claim 1 in which said stilened ap is formed by a plurality of folds of material `stitched together and terminating in spaced relation to said inner edge of the body portion.
3. An article of the character described formed from superimposed blanks of flat water-absorbent and iiexible material in which said blanks are shaped to provide corners and peripherally stitched to provide a relatively flat article having a double thickness through most of the area thereof, said article having a central body with a relatively flat arcuate outer edge and an arcuate inner edge of smaller radius of curvature, and generally opposed ears integrally formed with said body and extending outwardly therefrom, said ears respectively having outer side edges extending convexly between and merging smoothly with ythe terminations of said inner and outer edges, fastenersx positioned on said ears whereby the latter may be selec" .tively brought into overlapping relationship and secured together with the inner edge of the body forming a small .enclosed loop and the outer edge of the body and outer side edges of the ears defining a continuous peripheral margin spaced outwardly from and in substantially concentric relation to said loop, and stiffening means defining a stitfened flap extending along the outer edge of said body medally of said corners and terminating in stiifened end portions secured to said body with the intersections of said end portions with the ap forming said corners so ,that when said ears are secured together byv the fasteners said ap and end portions may be maintained in upright ,relation to said body to form an article receiving pocket therebetween for the reception of pins and the like.
