Description
June 6, 1961 w. J. FAso 2,986,961
FINGER TIP WRENCHES Filed April Il, 1960 INVENTOR l3 l4 7 WILLIAM J.FASO
flfi W ATTORNEY United States Patent 2,986,961 FINGER TIP WRENCHES William J. Faso, 72 E. 17th St., Huntington Station, N.Y. Filed Apr. 11, 1960, Ser. No. 21,449 3 Claims. (Cl. 81-177) This invention relates to finger tip wrenches comprising a finger embracing portion and a nut engaging portion positioned relative to each other whereby the finger tip of the user can readily position and hold a nut on a bolt in hard to reach places.
It is an object of this invention to provide such a wrench economically manufactured from one piece of metal.
It is another object of the invention to provide a resilient nut engaging portion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a resilient pad for the finger tip of the user which will also aid in the resiliency of the nut engaging portion.
A still further object of the invention is to support the finger at a natural angle of inclination to engage the finger tip with the nut.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description of the invention.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this application;
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view showing the use of the wrench in a hard to reach place;
FIGURE 2 is a top view of the wrench;
FIGURE 3 is an end view of the wrench in elevation looking at the left hand side of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view of the wrench taken on the line 4-4 of FIGURE 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of the nut engaging portion of the wrench, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 55 of FIGURE 2 looking in the direction of the arrows, and the resilient engagement of a nut; and
FIGURE 6 is a bottom view of the wrench.
The embodiment of the invention comprises a wrench formed from one piece of metal, such as stainless steel, and including a finger embracing portion consisting of a split ring member 7 having wings 8 to embrace opposite portions of the finger of the user between the first and second joints of said finger, with an inwardly curved portion 9 below the first joint of the finger, as shown in FIGURE 1.
Opposite the curved portion 9 there is provided a neck portion 10 connected to an annular nut engaging portion 11 of channel shape in cross-section and having the inner wall provided with tapering or pointed prongs 12 inclining inwardly from the bottom wall of the channel toward the center of the nut engaging portion whereby the prongs 12 will frictionally engage a nut 13, as shown in FIGURE 5. The prongs 12 are spaced from each other and the outer faces of the prongs adjacent the bottom wall of the channel are flattened, as at 14 in FIGURE 6, to form comparatively flat faces to engage the sides of the nut 13. In the present illustration of the invention, the nut engaging portion is adapted for a hexagon nut so that there are six prongs 12 with six flat faces 14. The number of sides of the nut to be tightened will determine the number of prongs and flat faces of the nut engaging portion of the wrench.
The connecting neck 10 merges with the outer side wall of the nut engaging portion 11 at an oblique angle with the nut engaging portion offset outwardly from the finger embracing portion 7, as shown in FIGURES 3, 4 and 5.
The nut engaging portion 11 is provided with a finger gripping surface by inserting a ring or annular member 15 of resilient material, such as rubber, in the channel of the nut engaging portion 11. The ring 15 will also act as a resilient butter for the prongs 12.
FIGURE 1 illustrates the use of the wrench in uniting two angle pieces 16 and 17 of a frame 18 to a horizontal supporting member or brace 19 by engaging the wrench faces 14 with the sides of the nut 13 to hold said nut against rotation while turning a screw 20 by a screwdriver 21. The incline of the prongs 12 will prevent the nut 13 from extending entirely within the portion 11 while being gripped by the flat faces 14, as shown in FIGURE 5, so that the end of the screw will project from the nut a suflicient distance to tightly secure the angle pieces 16 and 17 to the supporting member 19.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A finger tip wrench comprising a finger embracing portion and a nut engaging portion connected to the finger embracing portion, the nut engaging portion being annular and of upwardly opening channel shape in cross-section and having the inner wall provided with prongs tapering from the bottom wall of the channel and each prong adapted to engage a side of the nut, the portions of the prongs adjacent to the bottom wall of the channel constituting the entrance to the nut engaging portion.
2. A finger tip wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outer faces of the prongs adjacent the bottom wall of the channel are flattened to firmly grip the sides of the nut, and the prongs incline from said flattened faces toward the center of the nut engaging portion to limit the movement of the nut into the nut engaging portion.
3. A finger tip wrench as claimed in claim 1, wherein the finger embracing portion comprises a split ring member, a portion connecting the split ring member with the outer wall of the nut engaging portion and extending in a plane parallel to the axis of the split ring member and at an oblique angle to the outer wall of the nut engaging portion with the open end of the channel of the nut engaging portion facing a plane in which the axis of the split ring member extends, and an annular member of resilient material inserted in the channel of the nut engaging portion for the engagement of the finger tip of the user.
