ANDREI? J. ARRING-TON, OF EIES STATION, ALABAMA.
COMBINED RIDING-CART, COTTON AND CORN PLANTER, AND MANURE-DISTRIBUTER.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 298,653, dated May 13, 1884:.
Application filed August 21, 1883. (No model.)
To coZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. ARRINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Epes Station, in the county of Sumter and State of Alabam a,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riding-Cart, Seed-Planter, and Mannre-Distributer, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined cart, manuredistributer, and seed-planter; and it has for its objects to provide an apparatus which may be readily changed so as to serve for either of the above purposes, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my invention; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical sectional, view showing my invent-ion arranged as a seed-planter.
The letter A indicates the body of the apparatus, which is constructed in the form of a cart or ordinary farm-wagon. Through the bottom of the same is formed a rectangular aperture, 13, for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. Forward of this aperture in the bottom of the apparatus is a longitudinal slot, 0, through which extends a pivoted beam, D, which has a plow share, shovel, or opener, E, at the lower end, as, indicated. The said beam is arranged to work in guide-braces G, secured to the under side of the body of the apparatus, so as to be prevented from shifting laterally. The beam is recessed at II on its under side so as to rest upon the lower cross bar of the guide-frame and be held rigidly in position when down. In order to set the beam for different depths, it is provided with a series of apertures, I, through which a pin may be passed, so as to fulcrum it in the slot K in the tongue L.
The body of the apparatus is mounted on an axle, M, to one end of which is rigidly attached a wheel, N, and at the other a looselyfitted wheel, 1?, which permits the apparatus to be turned without operating the manure or seed dropping devices.
The beam D has attached to it a chain, R, by means of which it may be raised and held when not required for use, the chain 011 such occasions being fastened to a pin, S, at the forward part of the apparatus.
Below the body of the apparatus, and se cured to the hangers T, is located a frame, U, in which is adapted to work a bar, V, which ,serves to regulate the opening of a chute, IV,
leading from the opening in the bottom of the body of the apparatus downward.
I The letter A indicates a detachable hopper, which may be secured in the bottom of the apparatus, and extending through the openin g in the same. The said hopper is provided with an inclined bottom, 13, having a slot, 0, through which is adapted to work a pocketed seed-distributer wheel, I), or a series of manure-distributing arms, E. The distributer and disk carrying the arms are removable and interchangeable, so that one may be substituted for the other, or that they may be removed entirely when the device is to be employed as a cart or wagon. The crossbar F serves as a seat for the driver, whether the apparatus is to be used as a wagon or cart or a seed or manure distributer. The regulating movable bar at the bottom of the chute is adjusted to and held in position by means of a set-screw, G.
The letter II indicates a drag connected by suitable links to the rear of the apparatus, by means of which the furrow, after being properly filled with seed and manure, may be covered up with the earth thrown up on each side.
hen the apparatus is to be used as a cart or wagon, the hopper and distributers are removed, and the openings in the bottom are covered with boards, which may be fitted over the same.
In operating the forward beam, D, to raise or 'lower it from the ground, it is only neces sary for the driver to bear upon the rear or upper end of the same, as will be perceived.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S-
