HOWARD SCHOBY, OF PLAIN CITY, OHIO.
WHIPnl-IOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,627, dated May 13, 1884.
Applicationled January 14, 1884. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern.- Be it known that I, HOWARD ScHoBY, of
Plain City, county of Madison, State of Ohio, l
have invented an Improvement in Whip-Holders, of which theiollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a whip-holder in which the whip may be locked in place when desired; and the present invention consists, essentially, in the cornbination, with a whip-holder, of a lock to prevent the withdrawal of the whip therefrom, as will be described.
AFigure l is an outer-side elevation of a whip holder or socket embodying 1nyinvention,the case being partially broken away to show the interior of the lock and the collar or ring on the butt of the whip or its stock; Fig. 2, an inner side elevation thereof, the case being partially broken away; and Fig. 3 a section of Fig. 2 on the dotted line a: x.
Thewhip holder or socket A, as it is frequently called, is composed of a hollow case adapted to receive the butt of the whip B. Extended from one side of theholder is a lock, O, containing a bolt, D, having, as herein shown, a concaved end, which, when the bolt is thrown forward into its position, Fig. 3, by the key K, renders it impossible to remove the whip B from the holder, for the butt of the whip is too large to pass the end of the bolt.
The ward or wards H, or mechanism moved to a dash-iron or other suitable part ofthe carriage or sleigh.
Most whips made have one or more collars or rings thereon, near that end of the Whip which is grasped by the hand. One such collar or ring is shown at r. In case the whip used should not have a collar or ring upon it,
Athen a suitable metal or other colla-r or ring,
like that shown at r,will be applied to the butt or stock so as to occupy a position thereon below the bolt D.
I claim- The combination of the whip-socket A, lockcase O, having therein the lock-bolt D, with the curved end, and the ward H, all as shown, and operating as described.
In testi niony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
HOWARD SCHOBY. fitnessesz J Mns O7 HABE, J oHN MIILLHOLLAND.
