' AUGUST H. VIRZ AND AUGUST V. \V. RAUSOH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA; SAID RAUSOH ASSIGNOR TO SAID \VIRZ.
MACHINE FOR MAKING PILLS, TABLETS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,328, dated May 6, 188%.
Application filed October 30, 1883.
To all 2071 0111, it may concern Be it known that we, AUGUST H. WIRZ and Aneusr V. W. RAUSCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county 5 of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Pills, Tablets, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany- 1 ing drawings.
Our invention relates to machines for automatically forming pills, 850., by compressing a sufficient quantity of the pulverized material into the required shape; and theimprovement 1 consists in the manner of constructing said ma chine, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The principal operating parts of our machine are, first, ainagazine or hopper forhold- 2o ing the powdered material from which the pills are to be made; second, a rectangularsliding plate having at or near one or both of the ends thereof a gage for measuring the powdered material to be used in forming each pill third, a hollow steel cylinder into which the powder is emptied after being gaged or measured; fourth, two solid cylindrical steel plungers, set one above the other, the lower one fitting into the bottom and the upper one into the top of the steel cylinder. The upper plunger being withdrawn from theisteel cylinder, the powdered material is dropped therein, after which the top plunger is forced downward, and the pill is compressed into the desired- 3 5 shape between the upper and lower plungers,
the steel cylinder keeping the material in posit-ion to be acted upon by the plungers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of our machine; Fig. 2, a rear elevation; Fig. 3, an end elevation. Fig. 4c is a c'rosssection through the middle of the machine. These figures all show the machine in position immediately after having formed a pill and before the said pill has been knocked 4 5 off of the top of the bottom plunger into the receiving-receptacle. Figs. 5 and 6 are details of the upper and lower plungers.
A A represent the frame of the machine.
B is a driving-shaft extending horizontally (No model.)
across the top of the machine, and having on one end thereof the driving-pulley O.
C is a crank on the shaft B.
c is a vertical shaft operated by the crank O.
a is a knuckle-joint in the shaft 0, to allow said shaft to be operated by the crank.
d is a horizontal brace or support extending across the machine, and forming a guide or bearing for the vertical shaft.
k is a cylindrical steel plunger secured in the lower end of the shaft 0. l
b is a cam on the shaft 13.
a, and a, are notches on the cam 11.
Z) is a cam on the outer end of the shaft B.
a is a wheel or pulley on the shaft B.
y is a magazine or hopper into which the powder is placed.
9 is a wire screw extending downward into the hopper for the purpose of keeping the powder loose, so that it will drop or fall freely. This screw is operated by a belt extending from the pulley a to a wheel on the shaft carrying the said screw.
D is a rectangular slide moving back and forward under the hopper.
d is a hole in the end of the slide D. This hole serves as a gage or measure for the amount of powder to be used in making each pill. There may be an additional hole of a different size in the opposite end of the slide D, said slide being turned end for end when desiring to change the size of the pill.
is is the bottom plunger. This plunger enters the steel cylinder from the lower end and lever 0,, fastened rigidly to the horizontal shaft m, secured under the bed-plate frame.
c, is an arm or lever fastened 011 the shaft m, and extending up into a slot oropening cut in the slide D.
of the ter the pill has been thus formed, the upper the other end fastened to the support (1.
a is a spiral spring fastened to the lever c, and connecting with any rigid or stationary part of the machine. This spring is for the purpose of keeping the upper end of the lever 0 always in position against the cam b.
b, is a pivoted bar or lever operated by the vertical sliding bar 1),, and extending'into the slot 8 in the middle of the lower plunger.
a is a spiral spring fastened at one end to the lever b, and at the other to the supporth. This spring draws down the lever 11,, thus bringing the lower plunger back into position after it has been forced upward.
d is a vertical bar extending downward through the support d.
e is a catch or projection on the side of the bar (1. This catch is operated upon by a similar projection extending about one-fifth of the way around on the side of the collar b.
e is a spiral spring wound around the bar (1, and having one end secured thereto and This spring serves to bring the bar back into position after being partially turned around by the projection on the collar b, operating on the catch 6.
d is a finger on the lower end of." the bar at. This finger is adjusted so that it will pass over the top of the bottom plunger and knock the finished pill off into a receptacle placed to receive it.
The machine having finished making a pill, and being in the position shown in Fig. 1, 2, 3, and 4, with the pill resting on the top of the bottom plunger and the finger (1,, as shown in Fig. 1, the powdered material will fall down through the opening in the bottom of thehopper into the gage or measure cl on the slide D. (See Fig. 4.) The wheel 0, being then turned, moves the shaft B, thus operating the various cams, levers, &c. the side of the collar 12 will immediately opcrate on the catch 0, causing the shaft (1 to turn partially around and throw the finger d, forward, thus knocking off the finished pill resting on the end of the lower plunger. Immediately after the finger d, has been thrown forward, thecamb operates the lever c, which, acting through the levers 0,, 0,, and 0,, moves the slide D forward, so as to bring the gage or measure d directly over the hollow cylinder h, into which the powder drops, the bottom plunger, 7c, having in the meantime dropped down sufiiciently far in the cylinder to allow the-material to enter. By the continued revolving of the shaft B after the powder has been dropped into the cylinder, the crank 0 moves the shaft a, carrying the plunger it down into the cylinder h, thus compressing the powder between the ends of the upper and lower plungers. Immediately af- The projection on plunger moves or is carried upward, and the slide D recedes, followed by the finger d,, until both the slide and'thc finger are in the position shown in the figures. In the meantime the lower plunger is, by means of the cam 1), operating on the bar b, and lever 1),, forced upward, carrying the completed pill on the end into a position, to be knocked off by the finger (1,. (See Fig. 1.) The notches a, on the cam 11 (see Fig. 3) cause the lever c to shake the slide D back and forward when the measure is under the hopper, thus insuring a full charge. The notches a, cause a simi lar shaking motion to the slide D when it is over the cylinder h, and by this means prevents any powder from remaining in the measure. The form of the pill is regulated by the shape of the ends of the plungers k k, and if the ends of said plungers are cut squarely off a circular tablet will be formed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a pill or tablet compressing machine, the shaft B, having thereon the crank G, cams b and 1), in combination with the pivoted lever 0, operated by the cam b, and thus mov ing the sliding gage D, the vertical sliding bar 12,, the lever 1),, operating the lower plunger, 7c, and the shaft a, carrying the upper plunger, is, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a pill-compressing machine, the shaft B, connected with suitable operating means,
and having thereon the crank O, cams 111/, in combination with the shaft 0, having the plunger 76, the sliding gage or measure D, operated by the lever c, the plunger 76', operated by the vertical sliding bar 1),, and the cylinder h, all substantially as shown.
3. In a pill-compressing machine, the plungers k is, operating from opposite directions in the hollow cylinder h, the sliding gage D, in combination with the magazine 9, the bar (1, having the finger (1 and driving-shaft B, all substantially as shown.
4. In a pill or tablet compressing machine, the plungers 7c is, operating toward each other from opposite directions, and the hollow cylinder h, in combination with the finger (1,, connected with suitable operating mechanism for moving the said finger back and forward, thus knocking the finished pill or tablet from off the top of the lower plunger, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST H. IVIRZ.
AUGUST V. W. RAUSOH.
