GOLF CLUB CLEANING DEVICE Filed June 29, 1959 United States Patent 2,981,964 GOLF CLUB CLEANING DEVICE John H. Downing, 3868 S. Beachview Drive,
Willoughby, Ohio Filed June 29, 1959, 561. No. 823,522 2 1 Claim. curs-s clubs and more particularly to a device for cleaning 0E mud and dirtfrom the driving-face of the headof such clubs. T
often becomes encrusted and covered with mud and dirt which seriously interferes with. effective use of the club. Various golf club head cleaning devices have been devised, but are too large and bulky to be conveniently carried on the golf course, and are ineffective for thoroughly cleaning the club heads, such prior devices failing com- I in suchdriving faces.
A further object of the invention is to provide 'a golf club head cleaning device that is small, compact, light in weight, and which may be carried easily and inconspicuously by a user when playing golf.
A further object of the invention is to provide a golf club cleaning device that is, simple to operate, inexpensive to manufacture, and is very effective in operation.
Briefly the. foregoing objects are accomplished by the provision of a golf club cleaning device including an elongated handle having a scraper blade at one end and a brush depending from the handle" adjacent the other end thereof. The scraper blade. may form an end extension of the handle and may extend downwardly from and outwardlyof the same side of the handle from which the brush depends'. 1A pointedblade or nib may be formed on the other side'ofthe handle at-the juncture of'the handle and scraper blade With this construction, the: driving face of the golf club head maybe easily cleaned by scraping oif the mud and dirttherefrom'with the scraper blade and brushing :Witl the brush. If any dirt remains in the grooves of the driving face,it can he quickly and easilyremoved f'with 'the poi'nted spur on the back of the handle. Addijtibn'allyQthe cleviceis small, rcompa ct,alight in weight,-

blade 12 at the one end and a brush 14 at the other end thereof. In the preferred form, the handle, in transverse section, may be of an inverted U-shape for purposes of strength and lightness in weight.
The scraper blade 12 is preferably of triangular shape having a scraping edge 13 and depends downwardly and outwardly from the end of the handle as shown in Fig. 3. Although the scraper blade is shown as depending at an angle from the end of the handle, it may extend straight out from the handle and form a'linear extension thereof.
The brush 14 in the preferred embodiment is formed of a synthetic plastic material, although any suitable-type of brush material may be used. The brush 14 is secured in a depending portion 16 to position the brush outwardly from the handle for more effective use.
Disposed on the top of the handle at the juncture of the scraper blade 12 and the handle 10 is a pointed spur or nib 18 which may be used to clean out the grooves in the driving face of the club head. Although the nib and the scraper blade 12, it may be disposedat any suitdescriptiomtaken in'con- *junctionwith thedrawingg-whereinz 1 j I, I, Fig. l is a perspective view of a cleaning device con- Y structed in accordance with .theinventiom l able position on the handle.
An aperture 20 may be formed in the handle, as shown, for receiving a cord or the like with which the device may be attached to the golfers belt, golf cart, or golf bag.
Although the scraper blade 12 isshown as being of triangular shape, it may be of any suitable shape that will enable the user to effectively scrape the dirt off the driving face of the club. I
The terms and expressions which have been employed are used as terms of description, and not of limitation,
- and there is no intention, in the use of such terms and expression, of excluding any equivalents of the features shown and described or portions thereof, but it is recognized that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
, Having thus described my'invention, I claim:
A device for cleaning the head of a golf club comthe handle oppositethe first 'namedside adjacent the juncture ofthe handle and the scraper hlade, said spur being 'disposed, withi handle and-forming a; continuation of the handle.
