Description

April 1951 D. E. STORY 25,980,420
SAWA-HOSE Filed June 2, 1958 INVENTOR. DONALD E. STORY United States Patent SAW-A-HOSE Donald E. Story, 602 Donaldson Sh, Canton, Mo. Filed June 2, 1958, Ser. No. 739,355 1 Claim. (Cl. 269-141) This invention relates to fixtures and more particularly to a fixture for holding flexible hose while it is being cut.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a vice type fixture for holding flexible hose while being cut that will maintain it in the proper position at all times without permitting undue flexure thereof that might otherwise interfere with the accuracy of the cut.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a vice for holding flexible hose of the above type that is completely adjustable for accommodating hose of different types and sizes and which may be manually held with one hand while the other hand is used to operate the cutting saw.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fixture for cutting hose bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device made in accordance withthe present invention in operative use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a main member forming a part of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an auxiliary member forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the elements shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the elements shown in Figure 3.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a fixture made in accordance with the present invention for holding a length of hose during the cutting thereof, is shown to include a main base plate 12 having an end stop in the form of an end wall 15 secured in perpendicular relationship at one end thereof. A longitudinal slot 13 in the main base plate 12 slidably receives an auxiliary base plate 18 of a similar member having an end wall 19 extending perpendicularly upwardly therefrom. When assembled together, the slide or auxiliary base plate 18 is slidably received within the longitudinal groove 13 of the main base plate 12, whereupon the end walls 15, 19 are movable in spaced apart parallel planes, relative to each other. Each end wall 15, 19 is provided with a longitudinal slot 16, 20, respectively which is in alignment with the longitudinal axes of the base plates 12, 18. In actual use, the end wall 15 forms an outer wall and the end wall 19 forms an inner wall and the main base plate 12 is placed upon a supporting surface with the end wall 15 thereof spaced furthest away from the operator of the saw 25. This will allow the auxiliary memher to be assembled therewith so that the end wall 19 may be directed away from the operator toward the main base plate end wall 15. By then placing a length of hose ice 23 between the end Walls 15, 19, the saw 25 may be used to cut the hose along a line common to the slots 16, 20 in the end walls. Since the saw 25 will cut during the forward stroke thereof, by holding the main base plate 12 downwardly firmly with one hand, the other hand may be used to push the saw 25 in a direction away from the operator without disturbing the position of the auxiliary member 18 and end wall 19; the cutting pressure is directed toward the central longitudinal axes of said hose plates. It will now be recognized that the length of hose is securely clamped in the proper cutting position without unduly flexing it during the forward and rear strokes of the saw which might otherwise distort it to a point of inaccuracy during the cutting thereof.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to Patent of the United States is:
A cutting device for use in cutting flexible hollow hose of cylindrical configuration comprising two cooperating members, each of said members having a horizontal base portion with an upright vertical wall secured to and above the upper surface thereof and located at the forward end thereof, the base portion of one of said members forming a main base plate of substantially rectangular configuration in plan and in cross-section, said main base plate having a longitudinal slot of rectangular configuration in plan and in cross-section formed in the horizontal upper portion thereof and extending the entire length thereof and under its upright wall forming a passageway therethrough of rectangular cross-section, the base portion of the other of said members forming a longitudinal disposed tongue of rectangular configuration in plan and in cross-section and being slidable within said slot and through said passageway beneath the upright wall of the first named member, the depth of said tongue being substantially the same as the depth of said slot whereby the top surface of said tongue is in horizontal alignment with the top surface of said main base plate when disposed therein whereby the hose to be cut will contact the top surfaces of the tongue and main base plate when being out upon the device, the width of the tongue being substantially the same as the width of said slot thereby preventing reiative angular movement of said tongue when disposed therewithin, said upright vertical walls of said members being substantially identical having exterior vertical side wall faces and cooperating vertical side wall faces parallel with each other and extending end to end thereof, said exterior side wall faces and said cooperating side wall faces being fiat and smooth, said cooperating side wall faces adapted to contact the diametrically opposite sides of the flexible hose to be cut, said upright vertical walls each having a single longitudinal aligned kerf extending from the top to the bottom thereof and located midway between the vertical edges thereof dividing each upright vertical wall into two equal sections whereby the cutting pressure of a blade arranged within said kerfs for cutting the hose to be cut is directed in alignment with the central longitudinal axes of said base plate and said tongue, and the bottom surface of said main base plate being flat and horizontal for effecting a flat supporting surface when the cutting device is in use.
