SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,955, dated April 29, 1884.

' DELL,a citizen of the United States,resid ing in the city of Bclvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement/in Two-Wheeled Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a class of vehicles known in the trade asroad-carts and its object is to adjust the thills relatively with the body to adapt the vehicle to horses varying in height without materially varying the horizontal position of the body or seat of the vehicle. It consists of pillow-blocks to connect the thills with the axle-tree, produced in segment form, made adjustable within each other,
and clamping-bolts to fix the parts in their ad justed position; also, the transverse corrugations of the contiguous faces of the pillow blocks, for the double purpose of readily determining the position of the adjustment and to prevent accidental displacement of theparts, all of which is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of such portions of a two-wheeled road-cart as are necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of such portions of one side of a twowheeled road-cart as are necessary to illustrate my invention in its application; and Fig. 3 is a lengthwise vertical central section of my improvement on an enlarged scale on dotted line a", Fig. 2.
In the figures, A represents a portion of a carrying-wheel of a two-wheeled road-cart, B a portion of the axle-tree, O a spring, D a springbar, and E a portion of the body-supporting loops, all of which are in every particular substantially the same as like parts in like vehicles now in use; and their connectionsand purpose are substantially the same as the connections of like parts in like or similar vehicles now in use, and to be found in the trade.
At a is represented the bed portion of a twopart pillow-blockfof segment form, fitted with a prominence, b--in this instance of V form'- rising centrally from its concave side, and extending transversely across the face of the block. One of these bed portions or is placed upon the axle-tree toward the end portions thereof, inside of the wheels,in position to support the thills. These bed portions are fixed in position by means of staple-formed stirrup 0, fitted to span the block on each side of the axle-tree, and are gained or let into the upper face of the block to conform to the concave surface thereof. The lower end portions of the stirrups c are screw-threaded, and extend through clamping-plates d, placed on the under face of the axle-tree, and by means of screw-nuts 6 upon the depending ends of the stirrups serve to fix the bed portions a of the pillow-block securely in place on the axle-tree. The end portion of the bed portion a of the pillowblock is centrally slotted lengthwise, as represented at h, to receive suitable clampingbolts.
At 1' is represented the upper portion of the two-part pillow-block, which is of segment form, having its outer surface produced on the same curve as the inner surface of the bed portion c,,in such a manner that itsouter curved surface shall engage the inner curved surface of the bed portion. This upper portion, 1 is provided, centrally, onits convex surface with a series of corrugations, 7c, of V form, extending transversely across its face. These corru gations 7c areof proper size to receive the V- formedprominence b on the bed portion of the pillow-block, and serve to determine the position of the adjustment of the respective sides and to prevent accidental displacement.
At Z is represented a bracket-support of the thills,having its central portion centrally fixed to the concave surface of the upper portion, r,

At or are represented clamping-bolts, which are passed through the bracket-support of the thills,through the upper portion of the plllowblock,and through the slots h in the lower portion, a, of the pillow-block, and by means of suitable screw-nuts, o, serve to clamp the two portions of the pillow-block and the bracketsupport of the thills in their adjusted position.
At F are represented thills, which may be of any suitable known form, and are connected forward of the axletree by means of a transverse bar, H, in the usual manner. The rear ends of thethills rest upon the uprising arms of their bracket-supports, to whichthey are firmly secured by means of screw-bolts passed through the parts.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if the screw-nuts 0 of the elamping-bolts a are slackened or unscrewed sufficient to permit the upper portion of the pillow-block to pass over the V- formed prominence b of the lower portion of the pillow -block the thills may be adjusted from their position in the solid lines in Fig. 3 to their dotted-line position,either up or down or in any intermediate position within the capacity of the device, to adapt the vehicle to horses varying in height, to maintain the horizontal position of the body mounted thereon.
This device is also capable of use for the purpose of changing the position of the body of the vehicle mounted thereon, to inelineit either forward or rearward relatively with the thills. This adjustment is accomplished in the same manner and by the same means that the thills are adjusted higher or lower, as shown in the dotted lines.
In the foregoing I have described and shown the prominence I) in the bed portion of the pillow-block as of V form, and the corrugations It in the upper portion of a corresponding V form; but, instead of the V form, other known forms maybe employed and still be within the scope of my invention. Instead of the separate upper portion, 2', of the pillow-block and the bracket-support Z, these parts maybe produeed in one piece, in which construction the use of the center bolt, m, will not be required.
For the purpose of producing a complete vehicle in connection with my improvements, the several parts necessary not herein shown or described may be any of the known forms 3 5 of such necessary parts, and may be applied in any known manner.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the axle-tree and with the thills, of a two-part pillow-block of 0 segment form, made adjustable within each other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The two-part pillow-blocks of segment form, corrugated on their meeting surfaces and made adjustable in the direction of their length to vary their relative positions, substantial] y as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the two-part pillow-blocks of segment form, made adjustable within each other, of clamping-bolts to fix the parts in their adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the axle-tree and with the thills, of a two-part pillow-block of segment form, and a bracket-support to the thill, constructed an d arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
