SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,929, dated April 29, 1884.

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN H. GoEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Im-v provement in Underground Conduits for Electric WVires and Pneumatic Tubes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of an underground conduit and pneumatic tube embodying my invention. My invention consists of a pneumatic tube, the piston of which carries wire which is to be laid in a conduit communicating with said tube.
It also consists of a combined pneumatic tube and conduit for wire, with means for opening the commmnication between the said tube and conduit in order to lay the. wire, and closing the same, to permit the passage and operation of the piston or carrier of the tube.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a pneumatic tube, and'B the closely-fitted piston thereof, which has connected to theforward end of its rod or stem B a spider or head, 0, the periphery whereof is provided with rollers C, which bear against the inner face of the tube 'A, so as to assist in steadying the piston 13 and head 0, and easing the motions thereof.
On thehead Ois mounted areel, D, on which is wound the wire to be laid, the same being passed through a tubular guide, E, which is fixed to the head andlocated below said reel.
F represents a finger, which is secured to the head, and projects horizontally forward, for purposes to be explained. A portion, A, of
the periphery of the tube at the bottom thereof is made separable from and hinged to there'- maining portion, so as to be opened and form a communication with a tube, G, which is secured to or formedwith the pneumatic tube A on the lower side thereof, it being evident that in the length of the entire tube and conduit the several portions or sections A may be successively opened, the finger F being so disposed that it passes under the sections and raises said sections, it being furthermore evident that the sectionsmay be hinged so as to be lowered, in which case the finger forces down the sections A,without, however, producing different results from those previously stated.
The operation is as follows: The wire is prop- 6o erlywound on the reel, and the latter mounted on the head. The head and piston are then inserted in the tube and the compressed air directed against said head. As soon as the piston and head, which I denominate the carrier, begin to move, the finger raises the section of the pneumatic tube, whereby the wire unrolls from thereel and passes through the space formed by the open section. and is laid in the conduit. As soon as the finger clears the section, the latter drops, thus closing the tube, so that the piston may pass the section without escape of air or stoppage of the carrier. The finger now reaches the next section and raises it, and the wire continues to be laid in the conduit. The section closes, after which the next section is opened, and thus the operation continues, the wire on the reel being of predetermined length, so as to reach a vault or testing-station, or given dis- 8o tance, where provision is made to remove the reel and apply a reel with another roll or coil of wire thereon, or replenish the removed reel, if so required.
By arranging the reel, finger, &c.,'behind the piston, and suitably disposing the same, the carrier may be operated by the exhaustion of air in front of the piston, in which case it is desirable to have the sections or doors A close upwardly against the contiguous portion of the tube, to prevent improper opening thereof.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pneumatic tube and its piston, in combination with a supplemental tube orconduit for electric wires attached thereto, and wirelaying devices carried by said piston, substantially as set forth.
2. Apneumatic tubc provided with movable doors or sections, in combination with a wire-holding conduit, into which said sections open, and means within said pneumatic tube for opening said sections and laying wire in said tube, substantially for the purpose set forth.
3. A conduit for wire, in combination with a pneumatic tube provided with wiredaying apparatus, and means for opening communication between said conduit and tube, substantially as described.
4. A combined pneumatic tube and wireconduit communicating by means of movable sections or doors intermediate thereof, in combination with the carrier of said tube, provided with wire-laying apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
